25.01.2022 REUNIONS AND NEW BEGINNINGS People from across Victoria have taken advantage of the newly open South Australian border this morning. Ben Smyth, formerly of Stawell, is moving with his partner Emerson Kennedy to Darwin to be a teacher next year. They were among the first border-hoppers today.... Mr Smyth said it was fortunate SA, the most direct route to Darwin, opened around the time they decided to move. Also pictured are Melburnians Peter and Dawn Mitchell, on their way to see family in Adelaide, and Kaniva locals Keith Wilson and Clinton Bell heading to a Shearing job in Bordertown.

The group, including scientists from Deakin University and Barwon Health, has discovered that the virus which causes COVID-19 remains detectable in cells for longer that previously thought, resulting in some patients testing positive for the virus well into the recovery period. 12.01.2022 Have you ever seen a round rainbow? This incredible photo was taken by Col Leonhardt in Western Australia and is the January image in the Bureau of Meteorology’s 2021 calendar. It was taken from a helicopter while flying over Kununurra in the Kimberley. ... As Col explains we flew into the edge of the rain shower, and the rainbow just unfolded in front of our eyes. Jonathan How is a Meteorologist with the Bureau of Meteorology, and says what people don’t realise is that when you look at rainbows from the ground what we see is the upper hemisphere of it, but if you travel above the surface and look at a rainbow you’ll see the whole circle. Each year the bureau receive thousands of weather photos, and they run a dedicated competition looking for photos to use in their calendars. The 2022 calendar competition is already open, and according to Jonathan How it’s a great way for us to connect with the community and see what’s going on because we don’t have eyes across the whole country all the time. Sending photos really does help us with forecasting.

The council's decided to extend its period until the end of the financial year, and stopped charging interest on unpaid rates from March 1. ... The initial no-interest period was set until June 30 this year before being extended do December 31, then again until June 31, 2021. Do you need assistance from your council?

"We're very close to having a situation where regional Victorians will be able to travel into New South Wales and into SA as well," he said.... "Those arrangements are for other Premiers to announce. We are closer to that. "Once we're in a position to bring down that ring of steel between metro Melbourne and regional Victoria, then there will be greater freedom of movement within Victoria and then there can be further interstate travel. "The biggest thing we can do is get the numbers low and keep them low."

05.01.2022 The state government is urging anyone with coronavirus symptoms that's visited Colac recently to get tested immediately. The state government says viral fragments of COVID-19 were found in the town's wastewater more than a week ago. Initial testing of wastewater taken from the Colac wastewater treatment plant on 23 November was inconclusive and further analysis of the sample was requested. ... Further results received yesterday showed that very low levels of viral fragments were present, according to the DHHS. This viral shedding may come from different sources such as used tissues, off hands and skin, or in stools and last for several weeks beyond a person’s infectious period. Discovery of viral fragments of COVID-19 does not mean that a someone with an active case of coronavirus has been in the region.

05.01.2022 A person has died in a housefire in Rosebrook, near Port Fairy, which started around 9pm last night. Poice and firefighters arrived at the Lydiard Street property to find the house fully engulfed in flames. The body of a person - who is yet to be formally identified - was found during a search of the house.... The fire is not currently being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

04.01.2022 Australia has finalised a deal for a limited travel bubble between New Zealand and select Australian states, with flights across the Tasman expected within weeks. Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke to his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern earlier today. Speaking yesterday, Mr Morrison indicated a travel arrangement may be one-way at first, with Australians not allowed to visit New Zealand.... "It's more likely to be a one-way bubble in the first instance, i.e. New Zealanders being able to travel to Australia, that's good for Australian tourism," he said. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack then today confirmed NSW and the NT will be the first states to welcome quarantine-free travellers from New Zealand. "I'm announcing the first stage of this arrangement, under which quarantine free travel will be possible from New Zealand to New South Wales and the Northern Territory from Friday 16 October, 12:01 am to be precise," Mr McCormack said.

03.01.2022 LET IT GLOW! Christmas has a distinctly electric feel in Warrnambool this year, thanks to some brilliant installations by renowned neon artist Carla O'Brien. A total of 16 installations have been turned on across the city, with the pieces set to become a permanent part of the town's Christmas decorations. ... The new sculptures were unveiled as part of A Very Liebig Christmas over the weekend, and will remain in place until after Christmas. They can be found in and around Liebig Street, with two installations at Cannon Hill as well. Ms O’Brien said that she was thrilled to be back in Warrnambool. It was such a positive experience with the neon trail that we had over wintertime, so it was fantastic to come back and bring a different side of Christmas, something that’s completely unique, she said.
