03.01.2022 Hey parents of toddlers Question : Do you hear your toddler using the same word to represent many things (e.g., this, that)? As little ones begin to tal...k and develop their vocabulary they do not have a word for everything that they encounter throughout the day. Often, the toddler will just point and say that or this. Question : Do you find yourself saying those same words to your toddler (e.g., It’s over there Do you want this one or that one (while pointing)?). Tip : Terms like, that, this, there, etc., come up everyday during our interactions with other people. Typically, there is nothing wrong with using these terms and many children will have no issues learning new vocabulary even if they are hearing these words throughout the day. However, children with expressive and receptive language delay need a little extra help and direct teaching when it comes to new vocabulary. The simple action of switching out those non-specific words with specific vocabulary when interacting with your child can make a big difference! This will allow them to consistently hear the label of the items they are requesting with the goal of eventually imitating these words or even using them independently!
