25.01.2022 Think it's bad when your lawn gets attacked by insects? Graziers in Queensland and northern NSW have been dealing with devastating outbreaks of pasture dieback across thousands of hectares. Associate professor Caroline Hauxwell from QUT predicted an explosion in pasture dieback in central Queensland would follow recent rain and has found a buildup of mealybug numbers.... Her team is monitoring sites every two weeks across Qld looking for mealybugs above and below the ground for Meat and Livestock Australia. The mealybug Heliococcus summervillei has been found at dieback sites in Australia and overseas. Dr Hauxwell is investigating the sap sucking insect's natural enemies and resistant pasture species. She says purpling streaks on grasses are the first signs of a mealybug attack and is keen to talk to graziers about how to search for mealybugs and will publish her research findings next year. : ABC Rural Jen Nichols

24.01.2022 KEEPING ANIMALS COOL IN SWELTERING HEAT & HUMIDITY As temperatures soared across the south-east, the Gympie region sweltered in 36 degree heat, six degrees above the November average. Forage Farms owner Stuart Andrews (pictured) says while his staff are used to the heat, special care and attention must be paid to the animals on warmer days.... The chicks and pigs struggle in the heat, he said. We put our misters on for them to stay a bit cooler too. Mr Andrews says while heat was one challenge of working on a farm, humidity was the real killer. Yesterday was even worse, the humidity was higher and that takes a greater toll on the animals and the humans than just the heat, he said. But everyone’s fine, this is just another day (for Kybong). It just slows everyone down. Tara Cassidy
