20.01.2022 Along the Aberfeldy Tracks Touring Route there are many lone grave sites signposted. Here are some examples; - The Taylor family. Point view. 1860s. ... Mrs Taylor and her children are buried here. They were once residents of the small settlement of Point View which was located near the grave site. The grave was originally marked by a carved tree that was unfortuntely destroyed in a bush fire. - Wiskas the dog at Donnelly's Creek.1961. He was the faithful companion of Don Scharlemann- a world war 2 veteran, who was wounded in combat. -Eliza Alderson at Edward's Reef. 1864. She passed away at the young age of 5 from laryngitis. - Kitty Kane. Aberfeldy. 1860s. She was a business owner who ran a hotel near the gravesite. She died in the 1860s shortly after her business opened. Her companions were meant to transport her to the Aberfeldy cemetery, but by the time they arrived at the hotel, they were completely incapacitated from numerous tavern stops and decided to bury her at the side of the road. If you're interested to find out what other gravesites, or historical sites in general, that we have signposted along the track then you can do so by downloading the map via; http://westgippslandinc.com.au/

18.01.2022 Please feel free to share. Many people know me as the Founder of the iconic ‘Aberfeldy Tracks Historic Touring Route’. Some may know me from my dozen or so books I have published and re-printed of the Walhalla- Woods Point Region. Some may know me from my mine and ghost town tours I do. However, it all started back in 1995 when I first published maps on the Donnelly’s Creek area. The maps are still popular today. Showing old township sites, mine locations, hotel sites, as wel...l as all your 4wd tracks. The Walhalla map especially is the most popular selling over 17,000 copies. The maps cover from Walhalla to Jamieson which includes Big River and Enoch’s Point. There are 20 maps in the series. Maps are available in A2 sheet size (Walhalla is A1). They are also sold in a boxed set, saving you $90. They are also sold in booklet form, A2 or A3 and available on CD inc. jpeg form and calibrated for programs like Oziexplorer. So check them out along with my other interesting historical and prospecting books at www.adventurermaps.com.au PS. I also have a detailed map of the Grant Historic Area. Regards Rudi Paoletti

15.01.2022 Worked between 1894 1899, this mine in Donnelly’s Creek was large enough to support a small settlement and postal service. In 1897 they also installed a rock boring plant, as well as a 15 head battery several kilometres downstream. In 1903 a new company purchased the mine. However in 1905, after falling yields, the shareholders began criticizing their management claiming that the 2000 spent on the machinery was false and that the cost was only 1000. This dispute coupled with the lack of gold caused the company to fail and sell its assets. The mine manager, who had spent his own money on the purchase, refused to pay the contractors to remove the rock boring plant which thankfully resulted in the equipment still being there in the same position for us to find many years later.

12.01.2022 Welcome to the first in a series of virtual tours of some of the historic locations along the Aberfeldy Track touring route. Starting in Walhalla and taking the Walhalla road north (gravel), we follow this down to the Aberfeldy river bridge, then back to Rawson via the Thomson Dam wall. This drive is suitable for 2wd cars but can be a bit rough and narrow in patches so take care. Each photo has further directions and info.

10.01.2022 Ore carts are some of the most common equipment we find at abandoned mine sites - they were used for moving ore and waste rock throughout the mines for processing and disposal outside. Over the years we have recorded countless carts during our trips. Here are few of our favourites!

09.01.2022 Hundreds of crushing batteries were installed throughout the decades in the Walhalla Jamieson gold belt. They are designed to crush the quartz & retrieve the gold inside by lifting large stamps that pound the ore. Many of these sites have survived for over a hundred years and have significant heritage value, providing insight in the technological history of gold mining in Victoria. ... Here are a few examples of intact sites spread throughout our region that we have located.

07.01.2022 The Anderson Mines of Aberfeldy. 71 pages covering the mines in and around the Kitty Cane area of Aberfeldy. Go to www.adventurermaps.com.au for all purchases. Only $22.95 inc. postage. PLEASE SHARE THIS POST Key features (see pics attached)... - detailed maps showing mines, workings, hut sites, tramways, pack tracks, battery sites, etc -original old 1800s to early 1900s photos and recent photos of what is there today -history of area -detailed reports and descriptions of sites visited -mines mapped in detail -many old original surveys, maps and reports -rare finds and so much more Many authors publish books by just researching. I, together with the valuable help from the Aberfeldy Track Historic Touring Route maintained by West Gippsland Inc. members, have published this book by both researching and going out in the field to find the historical sites and mines, this is why is takes many years to put together. In fact I started it 20 years ago. There is nothing like this series of publications out there, and I hope you take pleasure in reading them, as much as I had compiling them. Regards Count-Rudi Paoletti

05.01.2022 Welcome to our second virtual tour of the Aberfeldy Track touring route. Today’s tour will pick up where our last tour left off and ends at the township of Aberfeldy. While this trip is 2wd friendly care should always be taken as the road can be narrow in places. Our drive starts at the Thomson dam north of Rawson. Take the dam access road across the dam wall and follow this until you reach the T intersection which is the Walhalla road. Turn left towards Aberfeldy. Further instructions on each photo.

05.01.2022 Kibble buckets are large buckets that were used to hoist ore and refuse from the lower levels of a mine. They were usually made out of iron for durability and often had handles that were wrapped into an O shape for the rope to attach to. We usually find them next to / at the bottom of winzes inside of mines.

02.01.2022 During a recent research trip, we hiked the hills and gullies around the Woods Point area in search of some historical mining sites to add to our ever growing database. Some of these were easy to find and may be well known, while others were remote and well hidden so we don’t believe they have been visited in quite some time. Many hut sites, mines, pack tracks and tramways were mapped over the course of weekend however we have barely scratched the surface on this huge area so will be back again. The following are some pictures from our trip. In the interest of protecting our history, if you know the locations, please do not disclose them. Thank you.
