21.01.2022 Sometimes we need to climb above the clouds for a clearer perspective. On the Queens Birthday, we hiked up to the top of Mount Rufus to look down on the depths of Lake St Clair. This stunning wilderness is part of The Western Tasmanian Wilderness National Parks Area. Within its boundaries are a unique combination of natural beauty, rich biodiversity and long indigenous history. Over the mountains lies the Franklin River & Southwest National Parks and the battlegrounds for Aus...tralia’s most infamous environmental movement the Save the Franklin campaign. In the early 1980’s, the Tasmanian government submitted their application with UNESCO for a chain of six national parks to be recognised (and protected) as World Heritage. Simultaneously, they also stamped approval on a development application to dam the Franklin River. An ecologically expensive decision that, if built, would destroy a remarkable river within the boundaries of a National Park. Therefore, the 14th of December 1982 marked not only the creation of The Western Tasmanian World Heritage Area but also, ironically, a movement that fought to keep it untouched. That same day, Bob Brown launched the Save the Franklin campaign in reaction to these contradictory government policies. It took mass civil disobedience and over a thousand arrests to stop the damming of the freely flowing Franklin River. Over thirty years later, I wonder if the campaign only successfully stopped the Franklin dam because it flowed within a World Heritage Area? As Australians, do our natural assets need special statuses and international validation for us to value and protect them? .Surely we’re not that insecure and self-conscious. It seemed so obvious walking amongst the serenity that these natural spaces are special and worth saving. The moments of our lives we spend in the wild, we’ll never forget. And that should (ac)count for something, with or without the World Heritage label.

15.01.2022 This week the Royal Commission made recommendations that signalled a tough road ahead for home loan customers, smaller lenders and independent mortgage brokers alike. The major banks, the primary reason for the commission, well, they somehow managed to finesse the situation to their advantage. After a light slap on the wrist, the major banks were rewarded when the news broke with an immediate increase to their share price, profit margins and market power. Many have written ...and will continue to do so about how and why this all happened. But, as I’ve watched tens of thousands of homes experience blackouts on the mainland this summer, and bushfires burning for months on my backdoor, it's a timely reminder that governments, large corporations and independent commissions can miss the mark. Money talks. And now there's no denying that the major banks whom all make the top ten largest companies in Australia's list weld historic political influence. The pressure on decision-makers from their constant lobbying and generous donations to the Liberal and Labour Parties adds up. Those without a voice are often misrepresented and perhaps even set up as the scapegoat. Since, well, it's much easier to mandate changes to an industry when it can't fight back. As I wrote to a client who kindly reached out with words of support as the media noise was on full volume, These decisions are far outside of my control, but it’s so nice to be reminded that I’ve helped a lovely collection of happy homeowners along the way. Her words speak for themselves.

08.01.2022 Dear Wentworth. To my family, friends, clients and colleagues that call the electorate of Wentworth home. They say it's not polite to discuss politics, and I generally adhere to that. But, tomorrows by-election is different. I’m not too sure how it turned out like this, but it's truly become the race that stopped the nation, and you my dear Wentworthian friend are sitting in the political driver's seat....Continue reading

06.01.2022 Over Easter, I connected with the staggering beauty of the Tarkine Rainforest. Wild places like this ancient forest deeply move me, and their stories never cease to inspire me. . We heard tales and met some of the everyday heroes who've been fighting the bitter forestry wars for years so we can still experience the magic of those special nights in the forest. To them, I am grateful. I salute your bravery, your dedication. . Chaining one's self to the trees isn’t for everyone.... But, there’s plenty we can do behind the scenes to make a difference. It’s almost 10 years to the day that ANZ withdrew their support to fund a $2 billion pulp mill in Tasmania. The planned tree grinding facility was proposed by Gunn's, the infamous native forest logging company. . ANZ’s and Gunn’s 15-year commercial banking relationship didn’t deteriorate by itself. This destructive project was stopped because of relentless, and well coordinated, community pressure. It was the beginning of the end for Gunns, they were already morally bankrupt, and then four years later they filed for voluntary administration. . Countless old growth trees still stand thanks to this early example of the Australian divestment movement. It should also make us think. What kind of world are we leaving behind for those following us? And is our bank helping or hindering our legacy? . I’d encourage you to learn more about ethical banking.
