24.01.2022 Like any large organisation, the Australian Government relies on multiple resources to function effectively and efficiently. The federal budget is essentially an inflated accounting statement for the entire country. It is presented to Parliament and the general public by the treasurer, usually at the end of each financial year. It includes detailed information on the Australian Government's revenue and expenditures as well as its objectives, priorities and other fiscal polici...es. The budget is broken down into smaller proposals for sectors inculding Healthcare, Social Security, Education, Defence and Transport, and serves as the government's short to medium term strategic plan. The government raises money from taxes in the form of income tax, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and superannuation tax. If the revenue raised is greater than expenditure there is a budget surplus, but if expenditure is greater than revenue there is a budget deficit. The next Australian Federal Budget is due to be released on Tuesday 6 October 2020; it will contain the economic and fiscal outlook for the year ahead, following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

17.01.2022 We each have a slightly different definition of what financial freedom means to us: - The freedom to leave home for the first time and be self sufficient - The freedom to live life without needing to worry about money - The freedom to retire earlier... Unfortunately, many of us fail to achieve it. We are burdened with increasing debt, financial emergencies, prolific spending and other issues that thwart our financial goals. Here's a couple of approaches which may help achieving financial freedom: 1. Remaining accountable to your financial plan, and 2. Investing in yourself and your future. The bottom line is that this approach will not solve all of your money problems, but it may help you to develop healthy habits to get you on the path the financial freedom. Give us a call on 02 6980 9000 if you have any related questions.

15.01.2022 Centrelink announced it will be revaluing the market-linked investments, shares and securities of its customers to ensure it is paying them the correct amount. Normally done in March and September each year, Centrelink have revalued these at 1 June because the coronavirus has caused financial markets to go down. To see how this will affect your age pension, go to https://bit.ly/centrelink-revalue-assets. Or, if you haven’t applied for Age Pension yet, it might be worthwhile c...hecking your entitlements. Feel free to give us a call on (02) 6980 9000 if you have any related questions.

14.01.2022 "How could I benefit from having a financial adviser?" In 2019, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) released their report Financial Advice: What consumers really think, which surveyed Australians about their thoughts and attitudes toward financial advice. The research found that nearly half of Australians surveyed want financial advice, yet only 12% had actually sought advice in the previous 12 months.... At A&B Financial Planning, we believe in a ‘client centric’ approach. We try to not only assist our clients’ financial goals, but also their understanding of why, how, who, when, & what. It is this approach in which we see our clients benefit the most. If you, or someone you know is interested in seeking financial advice, you can contact us on 02 6980 9000 for an obligation free appointment.

11.01.2022 As covered in previous posts, there are a variety of scams which have been quite prevalent during this COVID19 crisis. Not the least of which are phone scams, where the caller will claim to be from a reputable organisation (phone companies, utility providers, banks, etc.) with the intent of tricking you into handing over personal information such as online banking details or other passwords. Some will even ask you to download software on your computer that gives them remote... access, at which point they can control your device and steal your personal information. What can you do to help prevent these scams? - Never download software at the request of an unsolicited caller. - Never share your personal or financial information such as passwords or security codes. - If in doubt, hang up. You can check is a story is real by calling the actual company on their advertised number. - If access has been given or transactions are made, immediately report it to your bank. - Report the scam to https://www.cyber.gov.au/acsc/report or phone the Australian Cyber Security Hotline on 1300 292 371.

10.01.2022 A great retirement probably means something different to everybody. It could be, being able to rise in the morning knowing that you don’t have to clock on to work every day to make the money to pay your bills. To others it might be towing the caravan around Australia to see all the wonders of our great country or, when possible, flying to foreign countries to experience the diverse ways of life our world has to offer. Refer to family or friends, people you know who have recently been through the same exercise, or on the internet, which has hours of informative reading. Sites such as moneysmart.gov.au, servicesaustralia.gov or any of the superannuation funds have caravan loads of information to start. However, we always recommend you seek professional assistance in making these major decisions as they can and generally do, impact government benefit, taxation, investment and estate planning matters. Give us a call on 02 6980 9000 or email [email protected] if you would like to discuss any of these matters.

08.01.2022 For many, Christmas this year may look very different to most. It can be difficult enough to budget for Christmas, without an unprecedented global pandemic, and the mass job losses that followed. Here in Australia, we are on our way to economic recovery, however, many people are still wondering how their Christmas will look on a reduced budget. Here are our tips to ENJOY a frugal Christmas:... - Create a budget, and stick to it! - Start planning early like most things, if you prepare early, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed. Start looking at your supermarket specials, grab those non-perishable food items to stock up for Christmas lunch/dinner early. - Ditch wrapping paper Christmas themed wrapping paper can cost between $2-$10 per roll (depending on your tastes), and will ultimately end up in the bin. Why not consider recycling leftover newspaper and give the planet a helping hand? - Consider a family gift exchange, rather than buying for every family member. - If you want to give individual gifts, why not make your own? Bath salts, candles, soaps, baked goods are all examples of easy to hand-make presents. - Similarly, why not GROW your own? Succulent cuttings are easy to propagate, and make for a thoughtful present. As Christmas draws closer, it is more important than ever to remember WHY we love to come together and celebrate. Our family and friends are precious, and our time with them even more so. If you're Christmas shopping, try to keep these tips in mind before you reach for the credit card.

06.01.2022 Last week, some Australian banks announced their COVID19 mortgage and small business loan relief will be extended for an additional four months. What does this mean? If you have been genuinely financially affected by COVID19 and have a mortgage or a small business loan, contact your bank to see if you may be eligible to have your loan repayments deferred for 4 months. Some banks already have loan payment deferral in place up to September 2020. This is an extension of that, bu...t is not automatic. If you already have loan deferral in place you will need to contact your bank again. For more bank relief frequently asked questions, visit https://www.ausbanking.org.au/covid-19-relief-faqs/.

05.01.2022 If you have more than one super account and are considering consolidating them into one, you should engage a financial professional BEFORE you transfer any accounts using ATO online services through myGov. Why? You should review which of your super accounts have personal insurances attached and a professional can help you determine which account is the best one for you to retain. Check out the video below from the ATO which discusses the conundrum of having too many superannu...ation accounts. And if you’d like to talk about your superannuation you can contact us on 02 6980 9000. https://youtu.be/4qn0CTZpcmI

02.01.2022 Do you have leaks in your budget? Many of us have, at some point, looked at our bank account balance and thought "where has all my money gone?" From streaming service subscriptions, to your regular direct debits, to tap and go payments; all expenses add up and can sometimes come as a shock to us if they are left unmanaged. Some of the most harm can come when we are not aware of our spending habits.... Here are a few tips that may help keep your spending on track: 1. Stop tapping your card for every transaction; Payments made by tapping are not instantaneously debited from your account and will often remain pending for 3-5 business days. 2. Go back to basics: try a week of spending only cash. You might be surprised how reluctant you are to break a $50 note. 3. Keep a notebook and write down your transactions. Whether that be on fuel, bills or a coffee. Write it down, so you are able to more easily identify where those budget leaks are. If you have any related questions you can call us on 02 6980 9000.

01.01.2022 There's a new phishing scam circulating that you should be aware of, that aims to capture your personal and banking details via fake websites. How does it work? - You will receive an unusual payment to your bank account.... - Someone claiming to be your bank or the sender of the funds will contact you via phone or SMS, asking you to return the funds to an account number. - You complete the payment via online banking. Those who've actioned these requests noticed further withdrawals to the same payee, by the scammers using their banking details. Financial institutions have processes for mistaken payments; they will notify you in writing (not a phone call from a number that may appear to be genuine). If you think you've entered your details into a fake website or have been asked to return a payment in error, reset your online banking password and call your bank immediately.
