25.01.2022 APPRECIATION POST: Amid the crazy times we find ourselves in at the moment, AHA has been completely humbled by the generosity and support of a group of people and companies we would like to acknowledge. These people have physically been involved, or have directly contributed to, allowing us the possibility to complete much needed renovations on one of our disability focused units on Phillip Island. Huge thanks goes to; Brigette Meyerr & Ben Weissenfeld, THANK YOU!! They kindl...y donated our workers their holiday house for the days that it took to complete the renovation. 17.01.2022 This week has seen Ability Homes working down in the Ballarat region helping two young gentlemen find their independence and a place of their own to call home. Imagine constantly forgetting how to do the simplest of lifes task. Imagine having to remind yourself all day that you are capable, and that you have the skills to be able to complete anything you put your mind too. This, unfortunately, is the daily reality for some and its something that a lot of people take for gr...anted. This week has been extremely challenging but also insanely rewarding. To first hand witness the passion and support that is available and the amazing people that are willing to help these young men, is very inspiring. Seeing the joy and elation on a mans face when you find him a home when he hasnt had anything to call his own for many years is the reason that we do what we do. We are looking forward to many more challenges and cant wait to meet many more people like we have this week. Thank you and good luck to these two amazing gentlemen.

09.01.2022 YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN REJECTED!! Its all too often that this is the headline of the emails we are constantly receiving. I want to tell you a story about a certain family Ive been working with for the last four months. This family consists of a mother and a father and six-year-old daughter. For many years they have been renting in the private rental market and have never had any issues, nor have they ever been late on rent, or damaged any of the homes theyve lived in. T...he current home that they are living in has been sold and the new owners would like to renovate the property so this family is in need of a new home. Luckily for them the new owners have allowed them to continue renting until they find a new home. As a service Ability Homes Australia works with in the disability community to help locate inspect and apply for homes in the private rental market. So far with this family we have just reached our 40th rejection email and in many cases these rejections come within hours of submitting our applications. We have asked for feedback, of which we are politely declined. We have offered higher rental rates, which we were declined. We have offered to updates the home at no cost to the owner and again, we were declined. Every angle you can think of weve tried and yet we still sit here in the same position as where we started. Now I tell you this story not because this is just a one off and this family are the only ones experiencing this, but because this is the sad reality that faces majority of Australias population that live week to week on a disability support pension. Figures released by realestate.com.au stated that out of 60,000 applications received last year, 0.006% of those applying with the sole income of a DSP were successful in their application. Thats 1 in every 2000 applicants. Youve got just as much of a chance of becoming an astronaut than these individuals and families do when it comes to renting a house. How is this fair? How is this ethical? But more so, what hope do these individuals and families have? The disability community needs your help.
