25.01.2022 The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability has raised the problem of the double discrimination faced by First Nations people with disability in an issues paper, released on Tuesday, asking people to share their experiences with the inquiry. Commissioner Andrea Mason said as an Aboriginal woman, she often talked about walking in two worlds.... "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (with disabilities) have to walk in three worlds," Ms Mason said. "They've got the issues of having disability, race issues and then they've got the challenge of navigating mainstream Australia. Thirty-eight per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a disability. For adults, it's 48 per cent. If you want to share your story with the Royal Commission you can do so at this link https://disability.royalcommission.gov.au//first-nations-p Jake Briggs is a disability advocate, advocating on behalf of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability.

19.01.2022 The NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme is providing many people with disability exciting new opportunities to be engaged in the world around them. At it's best it's empowering people to pursue dreams and a lifestyle that were often off the table. However as we've seen with the tragic death of Anne-Marie Smith in South Australia we still need to make sure the welfare of people with disability is at the forefront of service delivery. ... Below is a fantastic editorial in the Independent Australia from Thea Calzoni, a parent of an engaging young man with an intellectual disability. She has blogged for the Every Australia Counts Campaign of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and is a member of the committee of management of the Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability (VALID).

12.01.2022 Everywhere you go now from the local cafe, to the shops you're greeted by stickers on the ground pointing this way and that, making sure you're 1.5 metres apart. The outbreak of COVID-19 presents unique challenges for everyone, but for people who're blind or vision impaired, it's created additional difficulties. Social distancing is problematic because guide dogs and canes can’t measure the required 1.5 metres, see new markings on shop floors for queuing or read the signs a...bout COVID-19 precautions. The campaign is a collaboration between Blind Citizens Australia, the national representative organisation of people who are blind or vision impaired and The Kindness Pandemic, a group founded to spread acts of kindness to people who are struggling with the consequences of COVID-19. 09.01.2022 A MUST WATCH TONIGHT AT 8:30PM Tonight Four Corners on ABC TV + iview brings you a searing and profoundly moving story from special guest reporter Stan Grant in the wake of the shocking killing of unarmed black man George Floyd in the United States, which led to the largest protest rallies seen globally since the 60's. Stan and other prominent Aboriginal figures including Archie Roach talk about the impact of that moment and the subsequent protests in this country focusing... on Aboriginal Deaths In Custody. This is what history sounds like to us. This is not a story for me, it is my life. I don’t get to turn away from this. To not care is not an option because I live in a world where race and racism can suffocate us. In that moment he became every black life. There captured on video was every person enslaved, every nameless faceless person who were told their lives did not matter. Stan Grant

08.01.2022 WATCH THIS SPACE - LEND A HAND IS ON IT'S WAY! Ability Links NSW program provider Booroongen Djugun Limited - Community Care Service have been doing some fantastic work in collaboration with local services to launch The Lend a Hand initiative. This initiative aims to assist disability service providers, organisations, community groups and mainstream services across the Port Macquarie/Hastings area to promote cultural inclusiveness for our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander ...people with a disability. Participating services will receive a welcome pack, which includes a sticker and charter, outlining their commitment to creating and providing culturally aware and inclusive environments for people with a disability Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are living with a disability or some form of long-term health condition. Despite the variety of services available, there is a sense of anxiety within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities when accessing support from services. Due to this, some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are not receiving the care and support they need, which this initiative aims to address in a proactive way. Lend a Hand has been put together in consultation with local Elders, key community leaders and key services, by: - encouraging and supporting services to subscribe to the initiative. - providing services with a charter of the initiative’s core values. - providing services with a sticker that identifies them as a member. - providing helpful links and information about local training and resources, which will support services on their journey to becoming culturally inclusive and welcoming for people with a disability. How can you be involved? If you would like support in providing an inclusive space for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, the website will be launched next week.
