16.01.2022 More than six months of planning by the Living Country Culture Camp (LCCC) Steering Group culminated in what was not only a memorable weekend, but a highly important Aboriginal cultural event. This was the fourth and perhaps most successful LCCC held since 2008 with more than 350 people registered for the camp and more than half of these being under the age of 18. Funding was secured from the NSW National Parks Aboriginal Parks Partnership Program by the Greater Blue Mountain...s World Heritage Unit. We thank NPWS and the Office of Environment & Heritage for their ongoing support of Aboriginal Co-Management within the GBMWHA. The two day event began on Friday 11 November 2011 with participants arriving from early that morning to set up camp. At 11am, a minutes silence was observed after eleven beats of the clap stick and the Australian flag lowered to signal it was time to remember those who have fallen in conflict. The LCCC officially got under way with a Smoking Ceremony, Respect dance performances, Welcome / Acknowledgements to Country and other presentations. Lunch was then enjoyed by all while camp participants, visitors and school children got to know each other and begin a weekend of fun, adventure, cultural exchange and learning. Activities included camping, fishing, canoeing, swimming, clap stick making, art, craft, bush walks and other cultural activities including traditional dance, instruments, tools, stories and song. The night time dance performances were especially well received with audience participation completely filling the dance circle. The following pages speak for themselves with images and words provided by camp participants including the young, the old as well as the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike. A note of gratitude to all the parents that take the time, on a continual basis, to ensure that their children and others are able to enjoy the culture and showing them there is a place in what is now a complex and troubled world where things do not have to be complex, we do not have to have trouble! If we look after each other, the earth and the environment these things will look after us. Thank you all for making my weekend something to remember and something to be proud of.
