25.01.2022 NSWALC Student Scholarships now open for applications NSW Aboriginal Land Council has two scholarships of $10,000 each available to assist students with funds to help complete their studies at a tertiary institution (University or TAFE). Fields of study may include law, finance, business, media & communications, human resources, land & environment, planning, policy or property management, or a discipline where the applicant can provide a direct link between their study and th...e current or future work of NSWALC. The Scholarship will also provide an opportunity to undertake a six-week paid internship, to be undertaken between November 2020 and February 2021, in a NSWALC Business Unit of the Scholarship recipients discipline. 25.01.2022 NSW Department of Education and the NSW AECG Inc. recently signed a new partnership agreement to strengthen Aboriginal education outcomes in NSW Public Schools. The new Partnership Agreement 2020-2030, Walking Together, Working Together prioritises increasing the proportion of Aboriginal students attaining Year 12 by 50 percent by 2023 whilst crucially maintaining their cultural identity. This agreement also importantly seeks to improve the understanding of Aboriginal culture... and heritage by all NSW Public School students while imbedding Aboriginal cultural learning into the curriculum. 23.01.2022 Calling Aboriginal culture and language teachers across NSW Creative Kids is a $216 million, four-year initiative from the NSW Government designed to make it easier for school-aged children and young people to participate in creative and cultural activities. Under the scheme, each school-aged child in NSW is eligible for a $100 voucher per year to put towards the cost of lessons and fees for a range of creative and cultural experiences. These vouchers can then be redeemed by ...schools or teachers who are registered providers. The program has a strong focus on cultural and creative learning experiences that provide skills and knowledge of cultural identity. Lessons can be delivered in person or online. 23.01.2022 Plans for a school focussing cultural identity combined with educational success for Gumbaynggirr students Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan - 2 Path Strong Aboriginal Corporation is making plans to create a school on the NSW North Coast specifically for Gumbaynggirr school students which incorporates language lessons, classes on Country, mainstream education and more. It will initially cater for primary school children to not only develop a deeper understanding of their Gumbaynggirr... culture but also be equipped with skills for success in their HSC and beyond. 15.01.2022 2021 NAIDOC Award nominations open despite cancellation of this years event The National NAIDOC Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 National NAIDOC Awards ceremony, which was scheduled to be held on Central Arrernte land in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) this November. The decision was made due to the impacts of COVID-19 and the uncertainty surrounding travel restrictions, quarantining and physical distancing requirements.... Sadly, there will be no National Awards given for the year 2020, nor will there be an online event. 14.01.2022 $7.7m support for Aboriginal community-led suicide prevention initiatives 12 NSW-based Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), including Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation Airds in Campbelltown, will benefit from $7.7million in funding to support culturally appropriate suicide prevention activities including grassroots community activities and additional clinical services. CEO Darryl Wright said the funding would "go towards reducing the intergenerational ...grief and trauma that still impacts our youth today. For every family that we can help heal and nourish, our community will grow stronger and our futures glow brighter, he said. 14.01.2022 Gain a nationally recognised qualification and study NSW Aboriginal languages with TAFE NSW Dubbo, Gunnedah and Port Macquarie TAFE campuses are currently offering courses to anyone interested in learning to speak, read, write and connect with NSW Aboriginal languages. Wiradjuri and Gamilaraay are being taught in Dubbo with courses focussed on NSW languages also available in Gunnedah and Port Macquarie. Completion of these courses can lead to a range of employment outcomes ...and enable access to further study. Certificate I is in Fundamental Aboriginal languages for personal use and Certificate II is in Basic Aboriginal languages for social use. The courses are fully government-subsidised for eligible students. 05.01.2022 To help stop the spread of COVID-19, NSW residents returning from VIC must now go into mandatory hotel quarantine. The hotel quarantine fee will be waived for returning residents until Friday 11 September, however this does not change existing arrangements for those of you living in border communities. Three important things to know:... 1. You dont need a border permit for urgent medical reasons. Your health is a priority. 2. Border zone permits expire after 14 days. So check your border zone permit expiry date, and apply for a new permit at service.nsw.gov.au or call Service NSW on 13 77 88 3. MPRA Chairperson Des Jones said it signifies a new chapter in the self-determination of its communities in working with Government: The Assembly has come a long way in twenty years a...nd we are proud of our active history in driving regional autonomy and self-determination across the Murdi Paaki Region. "Feedback from our member communities has been vital in reaching this new Accord and we appreciate the support and hard work undertaken by both the MPRA and NSW Government Accord committee in getting us here. Im confident that this signing will help us progress improvements to deliver even stronger outcomes across the next few years, he said.
