24.01.2022 1917 - December 13 - Double wedding of James LINGWOODOCK to Daisy ROBERTS to John GEARY and Alice BOND - SLQ The double wedding held on 13 December 1917, featur...es two Aboriginal members of the 11th Light Horse Regiment outside St Luke’s Church of England, Charlotte Street, Brisbane. Wedding party members from left to right: Trooper James Lingwoodock, (Service number: 2433), an Aboriginal serviceman from Gin Gin, Qld, Mrs Daisy Lingwoodock (nee Roberts) from Normanton, Qld., an unidentified Bridesmaid, Trooper John Geary, (Service number: 2429), an Aboriginal serviceman from Tantitha via Bundaberg, Qld, The Reverend W P B Miles; and Mrs Alice Geary (nee Bond) from Gayndah, Queensland. Officiating minister was Hugh Simmons. (Information supplied by feedback from Archivist, Anglican Church, Southern Queensland, 2 May 2018) Jim Lingwoodock and John Geary and brides at their wedding prior to going to war. (Information supplied with attached newspaper article: July 21 1987). Jim Lingwoodock married Daisy Roberts. There is a Minister present standing with another lady behind the wedding party. The men in the front are dressed in military uniforms. The brides are both wearing long- sleeved white dresses, gloves and hats. One is holding an umbrella. Private James Lingwoodock, 11 Light Horse Regiment; Service number 2433, Enlisted 18/07/1917. Private John Geary, 11 Light Horse Regiment; Service number 2429, Enlisted 14/08/1917. The 11th Light Horse Regiment enlisted over 20 Aboriginal men mostly from Western Queensland and Western NSW. 13.01.2022 Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Lauraine Barlow, shares with us the beautiful mystical experience of two little boys dancing for the first time on country at Buddabadoo in Far North Queensland who are joined by the spirits of their ancestral 'Popeyes' (grandfathers). Aunty explains that ’Country’ is "the land, the animals, the place, the water, the sea, the people it’s all that in one; and it’s knowing that you fit in there"; and tells us about the Australian rainforest pygmies.

Respected Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Lauraine Barlow, explains how she can hear Country call and welcome her, and that Country can also tell one when it’s time to go away again to carry on life’s purpose. Aunty Lauraine also tells us how ‘half-blood’ children were taken from their families and forced to live in the segregated dormitory system at Yarrabah Anglican mission.
