25.01.2022 Please join the Aboriginal Programs-School Workforce team in congratulating our very own, Darren for wining a Secretary's Living Our Values Award - Integrity category. Darren is the Lead for Aboriginal Programs. His main role is to improve and support the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal staff in the department. He interprets his brief widely and is always ready to step up and take on work that will see improvements in the workplace for Aboriginal people. The way they ...live the values Darren is a shining example of Our Values in practice. I feel that he particularly demonstrates and exemplifies the quality of 'Integrity'. He has a passion for working to improve opportunities for his mob - and is not afraid to speak out when something isn't fair or isn't right. This is admirable in itself but what I think is really powerful about the way Darren operates is that he manages to do this with grace and generosity as well as great professionalism - which means that when he speaks, people really listen. He's happy to share the thinking, process and protocol that have gone into his commentary and advice, and he’s always clear and transparent with his reasoning - which helps to bring people along. He's also able to put difficult topics on the table and to respectfully talk through them, and he's alive to risks and issues for the department. This is the case in the macro - in major policy and decision-making processes but also in the micro simply talking with colleagues about their choice of phrase or way they frame a question. The impact they have Darren's job is hard and I know he's often disheartened when he hears about and has to deal with racism and structural and other issues that negatively affect Aboriginal people working in the department - and Aboriginal people who could have great careers here but never join - and the flow-on impact that has for our students. One person cannot alleviate all the unfairness or single-handedly create a culturally safe workplace across a whole state. But Darren determinedly chips away - solving a problem, providing guidance and reassurance, pushing here and there against the wall, prodding the system towards being better. He inspires and leads change. And his integrity is a huge part of his impact. Darren is a proud Aboriginal man and he’s also a dedicated public servant negotiating those two identities and the alignment of the sometimes conflicting responsibilities requires great personal and professional integrity. People know that when Darren puts an issue on the table it's because it's important. And they know that any solutions or pathways he proposes have merit. His advice is frank and fearless and informed both by his intellectual and professional rigour, and by his knowledge of culture and community.
