23.01.2022 Spotlight on G O L D E N * R E T R I E V E R History: A fairly recent breed, the origins of the Golden Retriever trace to Scotland in the nineteenth century, specifically to Baron Tweedmouth who bred hunting and shooting dogs on an estate not far from Loch- Ness. The breed developed from a cross of tweed water spaniels, red setters, wavy coated retrievers and bloodhounds. The Golden Retriever as the name suggests was originally bred as a working gun-dog and retrieving game.... The first Golden Retriever was shown at Crufts in 1908, but wasnt officially recognised as its own breed by the Kennel Club until 1913. Personality Traits: Very friendly, loyal and affectionate Best suited for: Active Families (the breed also excels as an assistance dog and is often trained to be used for search and rescue and other tracking roles.) Distinctive feature: Its golden coloured coat and excellent temperament Fun Fact: The parents of the entire modern breed, owned by Tweedmouth, are arguably the dogs named Belle and Nous who had 4 yellow puppies together. 23.01.2022 Even though the weather has cooled somewhat for our local South Australia- beware of the dreaded grass seed- still in peak season! if left untreated Grass seeds can be potentially lethal! the most common dart-shaped grass seed pierces the skin and can travel through the body and become embedded internally causing all types of problems. Watch out for signs of your dog licking or chewing at one spot- particularly around their feet/legs, or redness and swelling, a hole type... wound thats not healing, or sneezing, rubbing, shaking their head, or of course if you can visibly see a grass-seed embedded in their skin/fur. If embedded in their skin already it is possible to remove with tweezers, but be wary as parts of the grass-seed can potentially still be stuck inside the wound even after removing the visible grass-seed. Always seek veterinary advice if you are unsure. To minimise the dangers of grass-seeds; avoid dry and long grassy areas as much as possible, and check over your dogs coat after walks paying special attention to their ears, nose, armpits, belly and feet and pick out any hitch-hikers immediately. But most importantly keep your dog well groomed regularly, or clip them short for the summer to minimise the risks, especially if your dog is more prone to grass-seeds! Give us a call today on 8379 6522 or make a booking online via our website!

23.01.2022 Dog shedding and seasonal coat changes:: Sunlight and temperature have a significant impact on an animals hair growth. Outdoor pets will commonly shed once or twice a year usually at the end of winter. However, as indoor pets live in much more controlled conditions they will usually shed continuously throughout the year. THERES NO WAY TO COMPLETELY STOP SHEDDING. Its a healthy and natural process that is necessary for dogs. Routine grooming is absolutely essential fo...r all dogs and is the best way to keep shedding under control. Brushing and combing your dog helps to remove dead hairs before they can fall on your carpet, bedding, and upholstery. It will also prevent those dead hairs from forming mats on your dogs coat that can eventually harm the skin. When it comes to shedding; Double coated dogs have a course outer coat that covers a more dense, wool-like undercoat, and they shed the most. Its especially important to brush these dogs, as excess fur can get caught in the under coat and form knots and mats. These lead to hair lumps that rub against the skin and can cause abrasions, infections, or hot spots. Using the right grooming tools can make a great difference. For heavy shedders, a special brush tool like the FURminator can work wonders! But otherwise the humble slicker brush and comb should do the trick! If your pooch is looking a little worse for wear or starting to lose their winter coats; book in now via our website or call 8379 6522 before that shedding takes over your house!

17.01.2022 When Puppy coats grow into Adult coats:: A puppy is born with one single coat of soft fur, even if it is a double-coated breed. Most puppies will officially start losing it when theyre between 4 to 8 months of age. This time frame tends to vary from dog to dog as different breeds have different rates of coat development. The double-coated dog for example, will grow two layers of fur after shedding the puppy coat. The puppys coat pattern and texture may also change. When ...he sheds that puppy coat, his new, adult coat will come in stiffer and thicker. It is this period of time between puppy and adult coat that severe matting can occur if the fur is not looked after and brushed regularly- even more regularly than before. Regular brushing can help your dogs coat look better, and its a good way to bond with your puppy. Just make sure to use the right grooming tools for your animals coat. A smooth-coated dog should do just fine with a brush, but other coat types require specific grooming equipment. When brushing your dog between grooming sessions, be sure to brush through all the layers and get right down to the skin, starting with a slicker brush, and secondly with a comb. Brush every part of your dogs body; legs, tails, chest, belly, ears, face- not just the wiggly body! See more

09.01.2022 Spotlight on S H I H * T Z U History: Its history can be traced to wild Tibet where the Shih Tzu was kept as a domestic pet alongside the Tibetan Mastiff, which was used as a guard dog. The smaller pet aided the Mastiff types by vigorously sounding the alarm if intruders were present. The Shih Tzu breed made its way into China, sent as gifts from the Dalai Lama to Chinese emperors and was kept and bred as a companion animal and was a favourite among royalty. Personality T...raits: Lively, alert and affectionate Best suited for: An attentive owner Distinctive feature: Long floor length coat (in show rings), short squashed face. Fun Fact: the name ‘Shih Tzu’ loosely translates to ‘little lion’ in mandarin referring to its appearance. #shihtzu #doggroomer See more
09.01.2022 Spotlight on P O O D L E History: While most associate the poodle with France- the Standard variety actually originated in Germany and was originally bred as a water-retrieving bird dog. The name ‘poodle’ derives from the german ‘pudel’ which means ‘to splash in water’.Its characteristic haircut, known as the lion clip, derived from the breeds working heritage and was trimmed in this way to remove excess hair that became waterlogged, whilst leaving sufficient coat in place t...o protect and keep key areas of the dog warm like the chest cavity and leg joints. The poodle has always been in different sizes, but it wasn’t until showing began that the sizes were specified into Standard, Miniature & Toy. Personality Traits: Highly intelligent and easy to train. Can be wary of strangers, but affectionate to friends and family. Best suited for: families, but require training and professional grooming Distinctive feature: Curly coats and their show-ring haircut, short shaved snout and paws. Fun Fact: A troupe of performing circus poodles in 1700’s performed for Queen Anne of England. The best known circus poodle was called Munito and was taught to walk a tightrope! See more

09.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that Dexter has been reunited with relatives of his former owner today! It became apparent that Dexter was in fact left behind on purpose due to some extreme circumstances, but through the power of facebook his relatives saw the post and made contact. Rest assured these relatives are 'legit' and have photographic evidence that they know Dexter as well as other details. They will be taking over ownership of Dexter so hopefully this never happens to him again! Dexter is a shy boy around strangers- but recognised them straight away! Thankyou EVERYONE for sharing Dexters post to help spread the word and especially thank you to Christine from Lost Pets of South Australia for her detective work and helping to solve the mystery! A happy ending! Hugs and Kisses from Dexter!
08.01.2022 Brushing and combing your dogs coat is an important part of general pet care. Brushing helps to keep your dogs coat in good condition by removing loose hair and preventing hair mats/knots. How often to brush and groom your dog will depend on each individual dog and breed in question, and also depending on their recent activities. If not groomed regularly mats and knots can worsen and moisture that is trapped underneath a matted coat can predispose towards skin irritation a...nd infection. Grooming is therefore a preventative activity. Its important to use a brush that is comfortable and suitable for your dog. For a typical medium-long coated breeds such as border collies, shih-tzus, cavoodles, golden retrievers etc a typical slicker brush AND comb should be used- be sure your brushing right down to the skin and not just the top layer! For short coated breeds such as pugs, labradors and kelpies (yes they need grooming too!) the popular branded Fur-minator is best! NOTE; The longer you wish to keep the length of your dogs coat; the more often it will need brushing!!! For puppies Its important that owners take time to gradually train their puppies to feel comfortable about being handled and brushed on different parts of their body. This helps to facilitate grooming and also helps them get used to being handled. Discourage your dog from biting or any other aggressive behaviour while your grooming them out- this behaviour can often worsen over time if they are not trained properly to be brushed from a young age! We recommend regular bath and grooming every 4,6, or 8 weeks depending on the breed of dog and the condition of their coat, (but be sure to keep up the brushing at home too!) Give us a call today on 8379 6522 or making booking via our website http://www.dogsabouttown.com.au
