15.01.2022 Long On WA, There is another WA resources boom heading our way. At present there are over 65,000 million worth of projects underway in WA. See attached spreadsheets. The last resources boom was much larger at over $245,000 million but this 65000 million dollar boom with still have a profound effect on the wider WA economy as it winds into full construction. There are WA projects in Lithium, iron ore, gold, gas, fertilisers and other minerals being progressed at present. It i...s important that this boom now emerging is different to the last which was dominated by large gas projects. The gas domination meant that much of the capital spend was spent overseas on buying gas plant componentry. Gas was not then a speciality of WA. This new boom is dominated by minerals where WA is a world leader and more of the capital spend is therefore expected to be made in WA. Property prices in WA have been hit and it is a buyer’s market. There is the opportunity to buy well into a market that has prospects for considerable growth. Developers still need to sell properties to reduce bank debt meaning there are good buys available for the astute buyer. The thirty year Asian growth spurt is still going strong. A little technical but basically when a country GDP grows when it is in early stages of development much of this growth is actually for Food, the at a later stage in each countries development a 1% GDP growth can lead to a 2-3% growth in that countries steel consumption as the market seeks more products such as factories high rise buildings better community facilities bridges etc. India and china are still well and truly in this stage of economic growth. This drives the demand for iron ore. With the environmental issues now being experienced steel mill want high grade ore. It takes as much energy to melt a tone of 5% Fe ore as it does to melt 63% ore. WA and Brazil are the big two of iron ore for the seaborne trade. WA now provides well over 50% of the seaborne trade in iron ore. There are two sources of high grade iron ore, Hematite or beneficiated magnetite. Iron ore from hematite can reach grades in the low 60’s percent iron. Magnetite is lower grade but if beneficiated and then pelletised it can reach higher grades due to the reduction of the oxygen when the ore is heated to bind the pellet. Hematite can be mined at good grades.
