25.01.2022 Today marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Japanese city Hiroshima. At 8:15am on 6 August 1945, an American B-29 bomber dropped the worlds first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, obliterating the city and instantly killing 80,000 people, while 35,000 died later due to burns, other injuries and radiation sickness. Three days later another bomb dropped on the city of Nagasaki. The impact of such utter destruction is still felt today. In support of the Treat...y on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations, along with 58 faith-based organisations, has signed an Interfaith Open Letter initiated by ICAN Australia and the Uniting Church in Australia Assembly. It will be sent to the Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the leader of the Opposition, Anthony Albanese, and all federal parliamentarians. Please share the letter with your communities, networks and on social media, in support of eliminating nuclear weapons. #nuclearban See more

25.01.2022 Ramadan Message from Rev Dr Patrick McInerney To my Muslim sisters and brothers, Ramadan Kareem!... As a Christian, I deliberately address you as sisters and brothers. I follow Pope Francis and Sheikh Tayyeb who together wrote in the Document on Human Fraternity, Faith leads a believer to see in the other a brother or sister to be supported and loved. http://bit.ly/2Vf7u3e My name is Patrick McInerney. I am a Catholic priest. I am the Director of the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations. This year, Ramadan will be like no other. No communal prayers in the mosques. No public gatherings in halls for iftar. Not even large family gatherings at home for iftar. You will pray and gather with just the immediate family. No communal tarawih prayers in the mosques at night. And at the end of Ramadan, no communal gatherings for Eid prayers, or for Eid celebrations. It will indeed be very strange for you. I know, because we Christians have just celebrated our biggest feast, Easter, with similar restrictions: no communal liturgies, no public celebrations, everything done in the privacy of our homes, accessing prayer services through live-streaming, and meeting and greeting each other only by phone or Zoom or Skype. My Muslim sisters and brothers, even though we will be physically distant from each other in the coming weeks, each isolated in our own home, I want to assure you that you are not alone. As Muslims, you belong to the ummah, so are linked to each other by the shared beliefs, pillars and communal spirit of Islam. But you are also linked to us, and we to you: believers - by our shared faith in the one God; and all of us - by our shared humanity. We share your anxiety at this time of the coronavirus pandemic, as you share ours. We share the stress of the disruption that this has brought to all our livesI thank you for the food and provisions you deliver to the vulnerable and others who are isolated and in need at this troubled timeand together we share prayers and hopes that it will soon be over, in sha Allah! Besides, God watches over us all, giving protection, healing and mercy. As an expression of connecting with you at this time, here is my commitment: I will fast with you every day during Ramadan. I will pray for you every day during Ramadan. I will break my fast at the same time as you, at maghrib, every evening during Ramadan. I will have an iftar at my home at the same time as you during Ramadan. In this way, although physically isolated, we will remain socially and, especially, spiritually connected stronger than ever together! I pray every blessing from Almighty God on you, your families, and your communities, during the blessed month of Ramadan: By the physical discipline of your fasting, the spiritual devotion of your hearts, and the generosity of your almsgiving, may you find grace and favour in Gods eyes. Amen. Ramadan Mubarak

23.01.2022 Christchurch Remembered By Rev Dr Patrick McInerney Editorial, Bridges no 86, March 2020 Last month we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, remembering all those murdered in the Holocaust. This month and next, we remember the victims of the terrorist attacks in the mosques in Christchurch and the churches in Sri Lanka.... Our cover image is the Mori greeting, the hongi, two people rubbing noses together. This traditional gesture shows that we breathe the same air, share the same spirit, and are united in grief, in joy, in humanity, in sharing planet earth, in faith in God. This image is particularly poignant. The details in the design are the names in Arabic script of the 51 people killed in the Christchurch mosques. The dark green in the womans shawl the Arabic words for peace, love and unity form the map of New Zealand. Above and below the entrance doors of the mosque, as if in welcome, is the Arabic greeting Salaam (Peace), repeated three times; the dome of the mosque has the Arabic word for Unity four times; and central to the minaret pointing towards God is the Arabic word for Love. We remember all the names of the dead in Christchurch, in Sri Lanka, and in other terrorist attacks. We remember all the victims, everywhere. They are us. They should have been safe. We commit, never again! No more hate speech. No more divisiveness. No more us and them. We are one; one humanity; one common home, planet earth; one creation; one Creator. We must live in peace, love and unity. I conclude with words adapted from John Donnes, No Man is an Island: 'Each one's death diminishes me, For I am involved in humankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.' Rev Dr Patrick McInerney Image by Ink Sketcher Hammad Haider; commissioned by Humans Unite for an event to mark the first anniversary of the Christchurch attacks published in Bridges with permission. Bridges is available at: https://www.columban.org.au//interfaith/bridges-newsletter It is a free subscription, digital or hard copy. See back page for instructions.

23.01.2022 "At this time in particular we feel the powerful call to be people of peace. This beautiful concept is foundational in all religions, and in our shared Abrahami...c tradition it is richly expressed through words such as Salaam and Shalom. If we allow it, the call to peace crosses all divides and draws not only our thoughts and actions towards non-violence, but also our hearts and prayers towards God. It is at such times as this that as people of faith we particularly consider what it means to be people of God." NZ Catholic Bishops See more

07.01.2022 The 2020 Message of Silsilah for the Month of Ramadhan during the Coronavirus Pandemic. For the Muslims the month of Ramadhan is always special, but this year ...more special for the Muslims and for all because of the historical pandemic of COVID 19. One of the spiritual obligation of Ramadhan is always to share solidarity with those who suffer around them and in the world. Now the suffering of the COVID 19 is the experience of all in the world. All of us are invited to reflect on this reality of the world today and understand more that we belong to one human family, all of us who belong to different religions, cultures and nationalities. These differences, unfortunately, have been the cause of many wars in history and also in recent times. In the midst of so many sufferings, with joy, we listen today leaders of the world, starting from Pope Francis and other religions and political leaders who call for the end of all the ongoing wars and conflicts. The world is realizing in this pandemic that humanity is one in suffering and we must be one in helping each other even if we belong to different religions and cultures. The different religions and cultures cannot be any more a reasons to fight, but we are challenged to find ways to live together convinced that we belong to the same Human Fraternity. God has permitted these suffering. For all of us must be a meaning and a message to listen. Many are reflecting and asking about this new Message of God to humanity. We, too are asking: Why this calamity today? We know that Muslims will follow the proper guidelines of Ramadhan from their religious leaders even in this difficult time. Meanwhile all of us share solidarity and appreciation for this great spiritual time of Ramadhan in the life of the Muslims, all of us are invited to do our best to be in solidarity with the spirit of Ramadhan sharing and helping in all possible way with those most in need. Solidarity and goodness is also the spirit of all religions. May this spirit of solidarity will continue even after Ramadhan and be for all of us a new occasion to live together as brothers and sisters. May the COVID 19 will be considered this year a strong call to put God at the center of our life following our religions and also accepting that we are different, but part of the same family of God who created all of us. Thus, there is an urgent need to love and help each other. With this spirit we hope and pray that this pandemic will help us to have a better vision of life and to pray especially for those who have died in this calamity, their families, and also for those who are in the front line who are serving and helping. We salute them and pray for them. -SILSILAH DIALOGUE MOVEMENT-
