22.01.2022 GREAT NEWS! Newport Littoral Rainforest saved! Puchased by Department of Planning and NB Council: Friday August 23 Media Release: LITTORAL RAINFOREST SECURED AS... PUBLIC OPEN SPACE More than 10,000 square metres of Littoral rainforest near Newport will be preserved as public open space thanks to a $4.6 million joint investment by the NSW Government and Northern Beaches Council. Member for Pittwater and Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said the acquisition will ensure the pristine ecological area is preserved for the next generation. Our government is committed to ensuring the people of NSW have access to great public open space, Mr Stokes said. Protecting the environment is a huge priority for the Northern Beaches community,so I am delighted we have been able to preserve endangered rainforest, while protecting an important wildlife corridor and increasing green space in the Sydney basin. Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said the purchase was a huge win for the local community. Despite its high environmental value, this land on Hillside Road had been slated for sub-division and significant development, so it’s great we’ve been able to partner with the State government to save it and bring it into public hands, Mayor Regan said. I’d like to thank the many community groups and individuals who fought to have this critical land saved and ensure this incredible outcome became a reality. The purchase, co-funded with Northern Beaches Council through the Greater Sydney Open Space Program, demonstrates the NSW Government’s priority to secure and improve green space across the State. The site will now be transferred to Northern Beaches Council for ongoing care See more
20.01.2022 INDIAN MYNA PARASITE THREAT TO NATIVE BIRDS Exotic diseases carried by the invasive Indian myna bird could help it establish itself over native Australian wildl...ife, new research has found. Australian wildlife has long been struggling with the introduced species, known to chase away native wildlife and steal nesting spots. But a new study has discovered the birds could pose a threat beyond the tussle for territory by spreading the avian malaria parasite The study looked at more than 260 mynas caught across south-east Queensland, together with published data on more than 3,000 mynas and native birds across the region. Griffith University PhD researcher Nicholas Clark said up to 40 per cent of the pest species carry the parasite in south-east Queensland. "We did find that mynas in Australia carry a very broad range of malaria parasites and they carry a much higher prevalence of malaria than most native Australian birds," he said. "We suspected that they were able to carry a lot of strains of malaria. "They might gain an advantage over native birds in Australia that aren't used to carrying that many strains." Native Australian birds are particularly at risk from avian malaria. "Those exotic strains are a bit of a worry," Mr Clark said. "Some of these strains are the exact ones that have been linked to declines of birds in Hawaii and New Zealand." Mr Clark said avian malaria was not a risk to humans as different types of animals have different strains. 02.01.2022 Back from the brink! The critically endangered Banksia vincentia is a remarkable plant first discovered a decade ago in a small patch of remnant vegetation ne...ar Vincentia on the New South Wales South Coast. Only 14 plants were found, and then a deadly combination of bushfire and soil-borne disease reduced the population to just four. This made the Banksia vincentia possibly Australia’s rarest banksia, and is one of 30 plants targeted for recovery under the Australian Government’s Threatened Species Strategy. To ensure it is retained in Australia’s floral landscape, the Australian National Botanic Gardens has been working with Booderee National Park to create a seed orchard for the species from which they can harvest seed to grow and plant them back into their natural home. It’s been a challenge, but propagating efforts at the Booderee National Park seed orchard are proving successful so far. There are now over 1200 individual propagated plants. The ultimate goal is to have at least 800 of these fully established within the Booderee orchard to secure genetic diversity and the survival of this species. The future of this species is in good hands with Booderee National Park and Australian National Botanic Gardens in partnership with Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and Wollongong Botanic Garden. I’m proud of the Australian Government’s support for this stunning plant and this crucial project.
