25.01.2022 Not every woman loves shopping for clothes, for some, it's a waking nightmare finding something they love and that loves them back. Too many brands use perfectly proportioned house models -not average women with average figures. We come in so many shapes, sizes and proportions is it any wonder that what fits me doesn’t fit you? This leads to the typical fitting room frustration so many have experienced and in many cases, the need for alterations if a flattering fit is to be a...chieved. Until the fashion industry changes or we go back to sewing our own clothes, there are two things we can do. 1. Gain a better understanding of our shape and proportions to be better able to seek out the styles that flatter and fit us. 2. Use an ALTERATION SERVICE. Fine tuning can take a garment from mediocre to fabulous. The key word is fine tuning- if major reconstruction is required, walk away. See more

23.01.2022 Melissa McCarthy is Hollywood's first lady of comedy and a fabulous muse to look to if you have an apple, oval or diamond-shaped figure. An apple, oval, and diamond body shape are all full and round through their torso. Apple/oval shapes have a full tummy that often sits low while Diamond shape women have a high, full tummy that can give the impression of pregnancy. Let's have a look at some of Melissa’s style wins. Black outfit. There are a lot of things going right in th...is outfit: the black is a dark colour than minimises size (if you are not set against a light background) and forms a slimming vertical column of colour. Print tunic top with striped sleeves has lots of slimming vertical stripes and a strong vertical influence in the pattern minimising Melissa’s width. The long length of the tunic also helps to slim the torso. Black pants, white print top. Here the proportions are perfect for an apple shape - wide top and slender pants. This works on all shapes. The white top attracts the eyes upward while the high heels add extra slimming leg length. Long coral pink vest. This beautiful long vest adds extra vertical power to her outfit. Print pants, top, and vest. This outfit is cleverly put together. The diagonal stripes in her top encourage the eye to move up the body from her print pants, while the long vest adds extra torso elongation. her tan boots and tortoiseshell sunnies complete the look by creating top and toe coordination. 23.01.2022 In these challenging times, I thought a little distraction might be a good thing for those of us who love colour and style. So, here are four beautiful dresses to choose from. We so often focus our attention on the front of a garment but a stunning back can be a real show stopper. Which one of these is your favourite? I love a couple but one in particular jumps out at me.

20.01.2022 How many times a week do you wear pants? For me, it's at least 4 times. Knowing where to hem your pants is an essential skill for perfecting your style. Hemming your pants at the right length makes a world of difference to the appearance of your legs, your vertical balance and not to mention how well-groomed you look. The skinnier the leg, the higher the hemline can sit and look attractive. Wide-leg pants are best worn long and worn with high heels. A tip: if you wear only fl...ats and low heels, hem your pants so they are just touching the floor when you are in bare feet - that way the length will work with both styles of shoe. Do you know the pant style, width, and lengths that best suit your shape and proportions? An AbFab style consultation provides you with all the information you need to select the perfect pant for your body, your lifestyle and your style personality. It’s your blueprint for what to wear and how to coordinate your garments and accessories. Want more information? Visit abfabstyle.com or message me for a chat.

18.01.2022 Want to look more dressed up without looking too formal? The solution often lies with adding an extra tailored layer. A jacket is the easiest option. And of course, your style personality will dictate the style of jacket you choose. Perhaps you’d choose a different colour but which style would you wear with a pair of jeans?

18.01.2022 I thought my favourite style icon perfectly suited these words. Who would you suggest as a perfect match?

17.01.2022 What we wear every day sends out clear messages to others about our self-esteem, ability, personality, values, attitudes, intentions, status, and social awareness. It's a fact that it is impossible not to make an impression when you dress. No matter what we wear others are making conscious and unconscious notes about us drawn from our appearance.... We can dress to fit in, stand out, or stand apart and we'll reap the consequences of our decisions. Luckily for us, we have the free will to choose the direction we want to take.

17.01.2022 When you know how to apply the principles of line and design to the way you dress, the results can be visually transfomative. In this example, diagonal lines are used to increase or decrease bust size. These paired lines create a triangle which at its widest imagined side creates apparent width. To minimize a large bustline avoid the widest side crossing the fullest part of your bust. Instead, opt for inverted triangles i.e. V necklines. To enhance and visually enlarge a small bustline do the exact opposite i.e. halter necks. Tip. Raglan sleeves which contrast with the torso colour of the garment can do the same thing. Heres a little quiz for you: there are other diagonal lines forming imagined triangles In picture 1. Can you see them and what is the effect??

15.01.2022 I love a tailored pant suit; it can be adapted to suit any style personality. It can be edgy, authoritative, feminine, relaxed, sexy. Wonderfully independent women like Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand embraced this androgynous look way back last century. Since then the pant suit has become a fashion classic. One way to take a pant suit from fine to fabulous is to juxtapose the masculinity of the suit with the addition of ultra feminine accessories: think makeup, high heels, strappy sandals, statement jewellery, silk, satin, lace. Dress them up or down, either way they’re a great option for just about any occasion or setting. Are you a fan of any of these outfits? Is there a pant suit in your wardrobe?

14.01.2022 Following on from yesterday's post, if you are a curvy inverted triangle ((strawberry) shaped woman you can use Christina as a person to follow and learn from her successes and failures. The avoid outfits exaggerate her disproportionately larger upper body. Here's why... Cream outfit. By far the worst of the bunch and the sole culprit is the top. From the slightly too tight fit, sheen surface and too high, rounded neckline, all this top does is make Christina's chest look e...normous. Open neck blouses and medium to low V necklines would have been a better choice. Also, by adding invisible shoulder pads her shoulder line would have been raised which would also visually reduce her bust-line. Blue jeans and top. Another problematic top mainly due to the contrasting coloured raglan sleeve seam lines. Eyes follow design lines and this top centres all the attention at the widest part of the contrast area - the fullest part of her bust-line Royal blue dress. If it were not for the neckline this dress would be a resounding win. Unfortunately, the neckline creates a strong horizontal line across her upper body exaggerating the width of her bust. Red dress. Ditto above but this time it is the collar's wide horizontal base that is the offending culprit. The A-line skirt in part off sets this but still... Black jeans/blue top. A large bust-line and breast pockets are not good style mates unless you want to play up your girls. Keep your bust free from excessive structural elements and embellishments.

14.01.2022 Melissa McCarthy is our celebrity representative in today’s post. She is an Oval (Apple) body type. Many women who carry some extra kilos will often ‘self diagnose’ themselves as an Oval. It’s worth noting that to be classified as this body type, your waist measurement needs to be greater than your hip and or bust measurement. Anyway, here are some occasions when Melissa McCarthy did not make great style choices for her oval shape. The purpose is not to criticise Melissa, rat...her it is to offer anyone who has an apple body shape some guidance and information which they can apply in their everyday life. Let's look at today's less than flattering outfits. Black and white dress. I don’t know who was the stylist on this occasion but she/he should be sacked. Wide horizontal bands of colour just add extra width and diminish Melissa's height. Compound this with wide strappy sandals to further shorten her legs, and It’s a perfect example of what not to do. Grey dress. It's too shapeless and has to many horizontal design features. Beige outfit. Large prints do not work on large bodies even if you are tall, which Melissa is not. The colours do little for her shape or colouring. Grey-blue print dress. Ditto large print. Swirly, rounded shapes in the print visually exacerbate her apparent size. Purple dress. This could have been good if there was not so much fabric. Hiding a large curvy figure under swathes of fabric is not flattering. It's often something stylists do when they have little experience with full-figured women. See more

14.01.2022 She's Australia's Hollywood Style icon and more often than not looks amazing every time she steps on the red carpet. Like most celebrities, Nicole has a personal stylist, but this does not guarantee that everything she wears is flattering. This week we examine the style wins of rectangular (banana) shaped Nicole Kidman. In these photos, her slender boyish shape is craftily styled with line, design, and colour techniques to bring out the best in her straight shaped body. Wh...ile you may not have the occasions to wear gowns like these you can follow the same style techniques to get similar stunning results in everyday wear. A couple of design features in the classic black pantsuit make it an absolutely fabulous choice for a straight body shape. Notice how the pattern at at the waist draws the eye towards the centre of the torso creating the illusion of a narrower waist. The shoulder pads and and V-neckline visually broaden the shoulder which in turn makes the waist appear smaller by comparison. Very clever styling, There are few colours more likely to impress than bright red. The halterneck cleverly highlights and widens her bustine and when partnered with a fishtail skirt, together they give the appearance of an hourglass shape. In the light blue gown, the horizontal strapless neckline highlights Nicole's shoulders while being balanced by the feathered hemline. The perfect 'I have an hourglass shape' dress. Fit'n'flair dresses are perfect for straight body shapes and the belt further highlights her waist.

14.01.2022 Clothes shopping should be a joy not a chore. And it can be when you know how to deconstruct a garment to check the design elements that will impact your visual image. When all, or at least most elements are positively flattering for you then it’s a worthwhile purchase. Need help to do this? A personal style consultation is the very best way to find out all these things and more, but I know a personal consultation is not always possible so I have the next very best thing for you with My Private Stylist. It's detailed, accurate and comprehensive, covering everything from hats to hemlines, dresses to swimwear, earrings to shoes, coordination and much more. Message me to find out you can access this fantastic program either in a face to face consultation or online.

13.01.2022 Midi length is anywhere between just above the knee to just above the ankle. What are your best midi lengths? Well, that will depend on a few things including the shape of your legs, the condition of your legs (muscle tone, weight, veins...) your choice of shoes and your age. For example, my preferred length is 2.5 cms below the knee; short enough to be youthful and long enough to cover my not so youthful knees. To find your sweet spot, look for where your leg curves inward... or outward. Hems located at these points create the look of shapely, attractive legs. Avoid hems that fall at the fullest part of your calf especially if you have thick ankles, very full calves, and if you’re wearing low/flat heels or ankle straps. If you are short or a little on the heavy side, select midi lengths with skirts that are slim rather than very full. And if you do embrace fuller styles be sure to highlight your waist and add heels. See the picture! And finally if you are of a certain age, midi lengths that sit just above the ankle can appear matronly because longer lengths are traditionally associated with older women. Young women can look fabulous in this length, mature women may just look sensible (aka dowdy). However, like all things in fashion, what looks great on one of us may not look great on someone else, so find your ideal length(s) and step out with confidence and purpose! And remember, your perfect lengths are only one of the styling aspects dealt with in an AbFab style consultation. #hemlines #styletips #fashion #personalshopper #imageconsultant #howtodress #whattowear #skirts #Abfabstyle #absolutelyfabulouscolourandstyle See more

10.01.2022 Take your monochromatic outfit from drab to fab by employing one or more of these style elevation techniques. 1 Wear shades of one colour. 2 Wear garments with interesting/varying silhouettes. 3 Add garments with texture or design features e.g. pleats, patterns 4 Add garments or accessories with varying surface reflectivity ie. matt, sheen, and shine.... 09.01.2022 Well, it’s been a while since I posted a quiz so as the weekend is approaching, here’s something to test your eye for harmony and balance. Harmony is created when what we wear is a reflection of our own physical attributes such as colouring, body shape, face shape and line. Balance is created when what we wear neither overpowers or underwhelms us. So, how would you rate from best to least, these three garments on our model. Tip. If your eye keeps returning to the garment rather than her face, the balance isn’t ideal.

09.01.2022 DON'T START EACH DAY STARING INTO A CRAMPED CLOSET AND DECLARING "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO WEAR". A crammed closet is often the result of buying too much and wearing too little. A cramped closet causes frustration, confusion, guilt and regret. A wardrobe revamp session... is an invaluable session that provides clarity and purpose to what's in your closet. 08.01.2022 Style knows no age limits. Fashion fads will come and go but true style is ageless. Today’s post is a celebration of mature style and the women who refuse to give up on looking fabulous just because they’ve clocked up a few years, gained a few wrinkles, embraced grey hair (or not). So how do we manage to maintain our mojo as time passes? Well, there is probably a whole book out there on the subject but in lieu of a weighty tome, here are my basic and simple suggestions in poi...nt form. Please tell me what you think. To look youthful and stylish at any age, wear: - a contemporary hair style - lipstick in your best colour - slightly (or seriously)oversized sunglasses - an interesting accessory (to reflect your style personality) - a great bag - stylish shoes that you can walk a mile in because style and comfort are not mutually exclusive

07.01.2022 Well, here in Sydney it really feels likes winter is about to set in and a change of weather often provides the impetus to go shopping, either on-line or in a real life store. But before we all rush out to supplement our winter wardrobes it's a good idea to take stock of what we already have because it's so easy to fall into the trap of buying things on impulse. When we do, these items often end up as closet orphans, unloved, unworn, and are a waste of our hard-earned money. ...Everything we buy should bring us joy, flatter our shape and age, and be an item that brings value and versatility to our closet. Before you place that next item in your shopping cart or take it to the cashier here's 6 questions to ask yourself first. 1 Does this flatter my shape? 2 Is this item 'me'/does it express my personality? 3 Is it comfortable when I move and sit? 4 Does it flatter my personal colouring? 5 Will it coordinate with at least 3 other items I already own and wear? 6 Can it be dressed up and down? If you can answer yes to all of these questions, especially the first five then you've found an item worthy of you, your closet, and your investment. And if you are not sure about your personal colouring and/or your body shape, watch this space because AbFab is going on-line for colour and style analysis which makes me very excited.

01.01.2022 In the series on celebrity body types, we recently examined Nicole Kidman's style wins as a rectangular (banana) body type. Today we look at some of her style bloopers. The idea is if you also have a straight body shape watching celebrities with the same shape helps you learn what works and what doesn't. Let's look at today's less than flattering outfits. Floral dress: The sins of this dress are its shapelessness, length and unflattering colours. It's true that straight sh...aped women look good in straight garments but this works best when the dress is above or close to the knee. This length doesn’t work. Pant Outfit: This one could have been great except for the...awkward hem length teamed with the chunky boots. Nicole is tall and very slender and this outfit is bottom heavy and unbalanced. It’s difficult to understand why the usually very stylish Nicole even considered leaving the house in this number. Flat shoes and this coat/dress length looks matronly aka daggy (In my humble opinion). Red Stripe Dress. Someone as tall and slender as Nicole does not need the assistance of elongating vertical lines compounded by a straight silhouette. Her straight body shape is exacerbated by these design features. Black Dress. Another 'what were you thinking dress.?’ There is simply too much bulk for Nicole's small bone structure and it's a bit of a mish-mash design. Perhaps she was paid plenty to wear it.
