18.01.2022 So far I have refrained from posting any COVID related content but I feel that I can no longer stay quiet. It is time I spoke out in defense of our industry. Ye...sterday was just another devastating blow for the Melbourne’s beauty industry with the announcement that we will not be permitted to reopen business doors until at least November. I have heard nothing but complaints from various industries during the forced closure of many business, and subsequent cessation of work for many employees, during our current stage 4 restrictions and I am extremely sympathetic BUT I want to draw your attention to the fact that the beauty industry was shut down THREE WEEKS PRIOR to stage 4 restrictions. This Thursday will mark 9 weeks since we had to shut our doors. Yesterday’s announcement means that by the time we are finally allowed to reopen our industry will have been closed down for an unbelievable TWENTY WEEKS! (And that is only if we stay on track with this current plan, there is potential for this to blow out even further.) Now let’s take a moment to really let that sink in because this 20 weeks of forced closure is straight off the back of the 9 weeks we were shut down for during the first round of restrictions, a period in which many other industries were not forced to shut down (nod of solidarity to tattooists and personal trainers). I can imagine many of you reading this post, rolling your eyes and thinking to yourself beauty isn’t essential or but they would have to be in close contact with clients..... Let me educate you! We wear gloves, masks, sterilise implements and use hospital grade disinfectant to sanitise EVERYTHING in between EVERY SINGLE CLIENT and that was BEFORE COVID. Hell, we could even use Perspex dividers over our facial beds etc like they have installed in all of the offices and shops I have been to. (You know, the ones that are often rendered ineffective because you see everyone walk AROUND to talk to you instead of standing behind, like intended... *palm slap forehead*) After October 26th, as a part of the third step, I will be able to go and get my HAIR CUT (pretty sure a hair dresser has to be in just as close contact with clients as we do, correct me if I’m wrong), go for a two hour walk with FIVE people, party at home with NINE MATES until the wee hours of the morning or touch everything I come across while RETAIL shopping but I can’t treat my clients in a completely sterile environment while wearing GLOVES AND A MASK! What the actual F@#%? Many many salons and clinics, understandably, will not survive this. The beauty industry is being unfairly discriminated against. We are being treated as non-essential and superfluous. I’d even go as far as to say this feels like an extremely sexest and ignorant assessment of what we actually do and if you can’t already tell, I’m F@#%ING angry. Dan Andrews, I’ve been playing along but this was the final low blow. You need to revisit this!
