25.01.2022 Strengthening for Shin Splints Modified Calf Raises This modified version of the standard calf raise works your calf/ankle complex through its full range of motion. The aim is be to able to complete 3 sets of 15 repetitions comfortably. If just doing single leg is initially to hard, start with double leg, progress to double leg up and single leg down until youre ready for single leg. Keep an eye out for more strengthening exercises to complete next week!... Note: There will likely be other strengthening work you need to do after an assessment with your physiotherapist. If you need professional advice for shin splint management please call 07 4863 1292 or visit www.absolutephysiomackay.com.au

24.01.2022 Football Boot Guide Intro: Nike, Adidas, Puma, Asics, Umbro, X-Blades the common names you look for when buying a new pair of boots. Ponga or Morgan and Messi or Ronaldo you want the same pair of boots that your idol uses. Do you ever look further into your boot choice than just colour? Most football boots on the market have a 0mm heel drop (meaning no difference in height from back to front). This is fine if your body is conditioned to wearing them. Problems can occ...ur when youre not. If youve previously only run in joggers which have a traditional heel drop of 10mm, the change will be significant. It could lead to an increased risk of developing lower limb injuries including shin splints, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy or calf tears. Sound familiar? The only football boots on the market which have the traditional 10mm heel raise are made by Asics. Asics footwear are also endorsed by the Australia Physiotherapy Association. That 10mm heel raise may make a big difference if you or a mate are dealing with any of the above conditions. We certainly believe they are worth a look for injury prevention. Any questions? Give us a call on 07 4863 1292 or visit www.absolutephysiomackay.com.au

20.01.2022 Are my New Boots/Shoes causing my Shin Splints? Nothing beats the feeling of putting on those expensive new boots or shoes! Slick black, bright pink or any other colour imaginable nowadays, you certainly look the part. 3-4 runs or training sessions in and your shins ache, not bad, just annoying. 3-4 weeks go by and its no better, probably worse. Are your shoes part of the problem? Introduction to our football boot guide will be out next week so keep an eye out and find out if so! Any questions? Give us a call on 07 4863 1292 or visit www.absolutephysiomackay.com.au

18.01.2022 Strengthening for Shin Splints Bent Knee Calf Raises The forgotten muscle of the calf complex Soleus! Our previous post was the modified version of the standard calf raise. The bent knee calf raises shown here are an easy way to train this muscle at home without the need for any equipment. Bodyweight exercises alone though normally arent enough. When you consider the amount of load that goes through our lower limbs every time we run/land on one leg, it makes sense y...oull need to do a lot harder strength training. This exercise though is a great starting point. Build up to again that 3 sets of 15 repetitions. You will require more advanced exercises and load management advice if youre dealing with shin splints, so we recommend working closely with your physiotherapist. We are here to help! Call 07 4863 1292 or visit www.absolutephysiomackay.com.au

08.01.2022 Previous Post Update: Advice for Soccer Players! If you chose to transition from 0 to 10mm heel drop boots, you will need to take some time to get used to the difference. The 10mm heel raise will make your contact on the ball feel a little off compared to what you are used to. Some players will get used to this with time, others wont. If youre unsure if they are right for you, give us a call on 07 4863 1292. Or visit www.absolutephysiomackay.com.au Photo Credit: Langevad Sports Photography

02.01.2022 Should Preseason = Shin Soreness? NO! but it may be the result of a good break of activity over the Christmas period. Shin Splints is common this time of year as training loads begin to ramp up. Shin soreness is related to irritation of the connective tissue between the muscles of the lower leg and bone. If left untreated it can develop into stress fractures. A common misconception in sporting communities is that you can, run through shin splints. This advice put simply, just does not work. Shin splints requires specific management plans with your physiotherapist to prevent further injury. We will be following up with some additional information about shin splints over the next two weeks so tag a mate that needs it. Any questions? Give us a call 07 4863 1292 Or visit: www.absolutephysiomackay.com.au
