19.01.2022 FOOD AND SKIN HEALTH Eating a balanced and healthy diet plays a major role in skin health, eating predominantly whole foods is important: FOODS TO AVOID:... Reduce refined sugars including food with a high glycaemic index e.g., refined grains that digest fast resulting in a surge of insulin levels leading to increased inflammation. Also avoid foods containing large amounts of saturated fat (Deep fried cooking, pastries, chocolate, biscuits) which tend to make the skin oily (Katta and Desai, 2014). FOODS TO INCLUDE: ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: Function: Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and help to maintain skin moisture balance. They are important for the growth of healthy skin (Escott-Stump, 2015). Food Sources: Extra virgin olive oil, avocado, oily fish 2-3x a week, nuts, and seeds including flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans. VITAMIN A: Function: Is involved in tissue repair and healing and helps interrupt the breakdown of collagen keeping the skin soft. the upper and lower layers of the skin need vitamin A to help prevent sun damage. Food sources: Carrots, sweet potato, red chillies, parsley, spinach, hard cheese, tomato, butternut squash, mango. VITAMIN C: Function: Is required for the formation and repair of connective tissue such as collagen and elastin. It helps reduce inflammation by inhibiting the release of histamine (Schagen, Zampeli, Makrantonaki, & Zouboulis, 2012). Food sources: Guava, blackcurrants, capsicum, strawberries, kale, kiwi, oranges, tomatoes. VITAMIN E: Function: Neutralises free radical compounds before cells are damaged from pollution and heavy metals. It is essential for healing and prevention of scars, working with vitamin C to strengthen cell walls Food sources: Wheat germ oil, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, almonds, wheat germ, peanuts, avocado. ZINC: Function: Helps skin cells heal after injury and divide. There is a link between low levels and acne. Food sources: Oysters, wheat germ, wheat bran, dried yeast, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, cashews, beef mince, parmesan cheese, pecan nuts, curry powder, egg yolk. SELENIUM: Function: Works with vitamin E to protect the body against free radical damage. Food sources: Brazil nuts, tuna, squid, scallops, sardines, sunflower seeds - Alisha Van Asperen (Dietitian at Absolute Physio & Rehab ) REFERENCES: Escott-Stump, S., 2015. 19.01.2022 I have dropped a size, but the number is still the same on the scale? This is because muscle weighs more than fat! Fat helps insulate the body and traps heat, while muscle boosts your metabolism - this means the more muscle you have the more energy you burn when you are at rest - meaning you can eat more food and not put on weight!! (Just another reason to love weight training).... Research has found that the percentage of body fat increases your risk of overall death regardless of your weight. E.g. the term skinny fat, Meaning even those with a low body weight but poor muscle to fat ratio are at risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. This is why progress photos, skin folds and other methods of measuring progress of muscle tone are just as important as measuring weight when training. 14.01.2022 Fibre is the indigestible part of plant foods that help keep our digestive systems healthy. There are different types of fibre which have various functions and health benefits. Fibre plays a role in our bowl regularity, mental health, weight management, cholesterol levels, blood sugar control, and is protective against bowel cancer. If you have any of these conditions a Dietitian can help you monitor your symptoms through a specific dietary plan to maximise your health outcom...es. Recent research has shown that for every additional 8 g of fibre a person consumed, the risk of diseases fell by an additional 5 - 27%. A good way to increase dietary fibre is by aiming for 30 different plant foods per week, email [email protected] for a challenge sheet if you would like to give this a go.

01.01.2022 Alcohol has some detrimental effects however, effects can be minimised to allow you to include alcohol in your diet without sabotaging your progress. After consuming alcohol, it enters the stomach and small intestine, where its transported to the blood vessels and moves into your bloodstream. In this process, approximately 20% of the alcohol is absorbed through the stomach and the remaining 80% is absorbed by the small intestine. Alcohol is processed by the liver and broken ...down into a substance called acetate. Acetate is a toxin, as a result your body prioritises the metabolism of alcohol above everything else. Therefore the digestion of food is halted until all the alcohol has been cleared. Directly after training your body needs food to refuel and recover, drinking alcohol minimises the body's ability to do this effectively. Alcohol also leads to further dehydration. Therefore alcohol consumption following training has been shown to increase cortisol and testosterone levels and decrease muscle protein synthesis. As a result long-term muscular adaptations could be impaired if alcohol consumption during recovery is consistent.

01.01.2022 A commonly asked question is what is the difference between a Physiotherapist and an Exercise Physiologist? Both of these practitioners are recognised as allied health professions who are highly qualified and experienced in their area of field with a minimum of 4 years undergraduate degree. A Physiotherapist can assess, diagnose and treat many conditions from acute injuries, disabilities, diseases and help manage pain through physical movement of the body. Treatments may i...nclude: hands on manipulation, dry needling and exercises prescribed. An Exercise Physiologist will help patients who have serious health conditions or are at risk of developing conditions such as hypertension, heart diseases and diabetes - by creating an individualised exercise program. With a strong focus on helping the individual create better lifestyle behaviours.

01.01.2022 Today marks the start of National Pain Week. Pain is a normal human experience. Its purpose is one of protection. However, often when pain becomes chronic, it i...s not a signal of ongoing tissue damage requiring protection. Pain Physiotherapist Dr Tania Gardner APAM, with contributions from Tim Austin APAM NSW Pain Group Chair, Melanie Galbraith APAM WA group Chair, Michelle Wilson APAM, Peter Roberts APAM, FACP, Lois Tonkin APAM and Honoured APA Member and National Pain Group Chair Dianne Wilson discuss five facts for pain prevention.
