24.01.2022 Part 2 - Sciatica, SIJ and/or leg pain. Disclaimer - if you have any of these conditions, talk to a GP and a Exercise Physiologist or Physio before starting any type of exercise. Following on Part 1, these pics are generally more simple, supported and passive poses to help calm and alleviate the above. They're good if you want to get off the chair and do something with a little more intensity, although they're still mild overall.... Again, practice the posture within YOUR range of motion. You dont need to lift the lower leg in the lying pose like I'm doing here, but could have the foot on the ground. In the seated poses, you could have top leg in front or to the side of the bottom one. I'd also highly encourage using a blanket under the buttocks for comfort and support. 23.01.2022 When you have to fight your puppy for the therapy ball when practicing myofascial release If you're able to find some time uninterrupted, and you don't need lots of time, you can gently roll, compress or use other techniques to help show your body how to release new or old patterns of tension. 17.01.2022 Dancer and Half Moon poses are some of my favourites asanas as they blend balance, strength, flexibility and meditation. They help practice finding grace and steadiness through change. From my Anusara Hatha training, I've found the key to this is drawing the physical and subtle energies into the core and from Doug Keller, placing weight on the outer heel of the standing leg. 16.01.2022 Since Covid, the only time I've had to practice is at night a few times a week. I wanted to stay active in my practice. However, I've learned from my Exercise Physiology studies that recovery is a principle just as important as moving regularly. Our muscles and organ systems need time to reset and repair. So getting out the bolster and practicing restorative has helped me stop and find deep renewal. While Reclined Butterfly is a classic restorative pose and a fav of mine, acc...ording to Donna Farhi, poses on the back are still stimulating for the nervous system. Lying on the side is more calming as shown here. 12.01.2022 As I get older, I'm moving away from a yoga practice where I'm trying to progress to advanced or peak poses, and instead, just enjoy my body moving and feel gratitude that it's capable of even simpler movements. Like in this pic where I'm practicing Crescent Moon pose or Anjaneyasana. Then again, when I really break this pose down, it's not as simple as it looks. 11.01.2022 It's a common myth that a good massage is hard and painful, with the therapist needing to apply loads of pressure to get to the deep tissues. But from my massage training, I've learned that most of the time its the opposite and the purpose of massage is to get tight, painful muscles to relax so they can heal. In particular, in a Remedial treatment, 70% of strokes are those that warm the tissues. It's so important to educate people about this so they don't end up in more pain ...and empowered in these services amd know whst to expect. I was a frantic, overcommitted yes person, who became so exhausted and filled with anxiety, I couldn't get out of bed. But even seeming negative experiences can be a gift as it got me to therapy, where I was introduced to self care. 07.01.2022 Part 1 - Sciatica, SIJ or leg pain Evidence-based research shows exercise has good outcomes for injuries and conditions. But after seeing a family member have worse pain after all the physio exercises, it reminded me its not just about the exercises you do, but also the amount and type. In Exercise Physiology this is called FITT principle: Frequency, Intensity, Type and Time ... This keeps you moving, but in a controlled way. And a good starting point if you're in Sciatic, SIJ or leg pain, are some simple chair yoga poses as shown in these pics. The 1st and 2nd are variations of Dandasana or The Stick. Try to keep the knee bent and drag your heel against the floor to activate and protect the hamstrings. Next are chair versions of Pidgeon or Tree where the focus is grounding the foot on the floor and placing weight on the outer heel. This release and tones the Piriformis muscle. But remember, always take the pose to where YOU feel comfortable and especially not beyond your range of motion. If you're in pain, stop. No one in the world can do a better job of being you, than you" ~ Unknown I loved watching my niece, Arielle cartwheel and handstand all the way along a beach walk recently. Her love for being upside down mirrors my own as a child and later as a yogi. But I will probably not handstand or headstand ever again after scans showed a couple years ago, a slight retrolithesis (discs slip forward) at the base of my neck. Still, at times it's hard no...t to envy and compare myself to other teachers and yogis who do great handstands all over Insta, teach workshops and classes around on them.
