24.01.2022 2020 - June 15th UPDATE: General club meetings continue to be cancelled till further notice. No new members weekend planned at this stage. ... All official club walks and activities CAN resume Friday 19/06/2020, however you will notice the program is not as busy as normal years. Walk leader guidelines: All walk leaders have a responsibility to members attending their walks to prevent the spread on COVID-19. At a minimum, leaders should be mindful of the following: No more than 20 participants on the walk. Is any prospective walker unwell? Have they been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed withCOVID-19? Hand hygiene and coughing/sneezing protocols to be observed throughout the walk. Social distancing on the trail to be maintained. This is most important if campfires are proposed. No carpooling to be organised, except among family members living in the same house No sharing of food, drinks, chocolate etc. Website: Notifications will be posted on our website reflecting the current status

17.01.2022 Dear members. Due to COVID19 all activities including General Meetings have been cancelled for now. 17.01.2022 Members who attended the club meeting last night were lucky enough to hear (and see) an awesome SNAKE presentation by Dean from Snake Catchers Adelaide. Lots to learn about type of snake, venom, snake behaviour, and what to do if you’re bitten by one! For those who didn’t attend - time to update your will...

17.01.2022 Great news for the northern part of our state. 76 mm of rain at Arkaroola in the first few days of February

16.01.2022 If you want to compare a range of lightweight tents in one spot...

16.01.2022 West Lakes loop paddle last night arranged by Richard. Great to see people getting in the festive spirit with lots of decorations and lights. We battled some ‘wind’ but that just made the choppy bits more fun!

14.01.2022 USB charging stations at campsites. These photos are from the Larapinta trail where they have several USB ports inside the storage cupboard under most of the large shelters (charged by solar). Where else have you seen USB charging ports on the trails?

14.01.2022 For those members keen to attend the September Club Meeting this Wednesday night, please register yourself on the ABW website. You must formally register on the activity so we can monitor numbers. Thankyou

14.01.2022 How good is paddling on the Murray River? ... that's a rhetorical question BTW! Dave led a brilliant kayak weekend from Blanchtown over the weekend. About 35km round trip included some time in the backwaters, a few KM on the main river dodging speed boats, and some interesting little side trips through narrow canals. A beautiful camp on our own private island with a picture perfect sunset over the cliffs. For future reference, these trips are best suited for 'sit in' kayaks... we had a couple of troopers wrestle the 'sit on' kayaks which created much amusement for the rest of the group! Full credit where it's due - they pushed on with their 'river biscuits' and made it through.

13.01.2022 A big congratulations to Trevor and Bruce who finally made it to Vanishing Falls on their 3rd attempt! Turns out they just needed Tracy pushing them up that final boulder to make it happen! Well done to all 3 of you!

13.01.2022 The mountains are calling...

09.01.2022 New tank at Eyre Depot which is the next camp north from Dutchman’s Hut.

09.01.2022 The 2020 Spectacular was an awesome long weekend in the Southern Flinders. Hidden Gorge Loop, Devils Peak, Dutchmans Stern Loop, and Alligator Gorge Loop. beautiful sunny days and cold winter nights around the fire. We tried a new group campsite area at Pichi Richi Park which was perfect for our needs. The Spectacular JACKET dress-up party was a mixed success - some were difficult to observe without causing mental trauma...

07.01.2022 A great little tidbit of information about the yellow tail black cockatoo.

06.01.2022 Heysen trail section: Tappanappa to Balquidder. Who remembers this lovely surprise? After 5km of sandy beach walking you’re rewarded with a killer hill. They’ve had to build a second reinforced fence because hikers inevitably have to hoist themselves up!

06.01.2022 ABW members are encouraged to provide some input - a great opportunity to influence new trails or campsites in the southern Fleurieu.

06.01.2022 Another great read from Friends of the Heysen Trail.

05.01.2022 For those new to overnight hiking, this is a great video explaining what you'd carry on an overnight hike. 40L/10kg is probably optimistic for a beginner... most people would carry around 13-15kg in SA during the colder months.

05.01.2022 What’s up? Thursday night training walks are back on the program. ABW members can check the website for activity details.

04.01.2022 Thanks to Mike who has provided a great summary of the Caroona Creek weekend! Nineteen intrepid walkers braved COVID 19 conditions, a barbecue, a dry camp, coffee, a vicious weather forecast, Mike and Eric, a toasty hut, oranges and nineteen returned. Most of the weekend was off trail with the main feature (besides the reinvigorated bush) being a huge pound. This eventually turned into a creek system taking us from virtually the top of the higher land right down to south of t...he Caroona Heysen Trail Shelter and the low plains. Water was stashed and water consumed near to Tourilie Hut. Camping amongst the Mallee trees surely a highlight. Northwest we trekked the next day with many views as we trudged higher up a valley to the loftier ground again. It was virtually the old Le Mans start as we bolted down the dirt road south to the cars and the rest of the weekend. Special thanks to Kathy for her dedication in taking the dawn sunrise photos!

04.01.2022 Lots of news and updates coming through from Friends of the Heysen on sections of the southern flinders.

04.01.2022 great news for Yankaninna station.

03.01.2022 Narrina 4 peaks! Well... not quite 4 but still a great week in the northern Flinders. A successful ‘co-leader’ trip, Sammi managed to execute Johns brilliant walk plan through the area. Beautiful rocky creeks, scenic views up Mt Andre and Mt McFarlane, a couple of unexpected cliffs and waterfalls... but all in all, an amazing place to explore. The bore we planned to camp near was broken so the station owner Alan agreed to drive in our casks of spring water! What a luxury!!

01.01.2022 Interactive Map: Australian Multi-day Hikes The map currently includes 58 multi-day walks across Australia and the links that appear when you zoom in and click on a particular track are generally the official website from the land manager. https://lotsafreshair.com//23/multiday-hikes-in-australia/

01.01.2022 Eeny, meeny, miny, moe! Our walk leaders are starting to plan the year ahead! We are interested to know where our *members would like to go? If you're a current *paid member, please leave a comment below! Here's a couple of photos to get you thinking!
