25.01.2022 NYMBOIDA HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATION and GOOLANG CREEK Some of you may be aware of recent rumblings from within Clarence Valley Council (CVC) seemingly aimed at the Council acquiring and recommissioning the Nymboida Hydro-electric Power Station near Grafton. Of course, if this were to occur, the ramifications of water flowing again down Goolang Creek would be of interest to all Australian white water paddlers. CVC was set to discuss this issue at an Ordinary Council Meeting o...n 26 June 2018. Unfortunately, the Minutes of that meeting don't seem to offer anything positive for paddlers. Some of the items raised and their status from the perspective of Essential Energy (the Power Station operator) include: Item: Release of water for environmental and recreational purposes Status: there is no plan by EE to invest in facilities to reinstate recreational purposes ie canoeing and rafting. Item: Protection of heritage value of the power generation buildings (including equipment installed within the facility) Status: Item complete. Item: Nymboida power generation buildings and ancillary infrastructure to be decommissioned and secured Status: Item complete. You can read more at Item 15.115/18 (pages 274-276) of the Minutes at https://www.clarence.nsw.gov.au/page.asp?f=RES-RCG-35-28-01

24.01.2022 This short video explains why many paddlers prefer canoe/kayak touring on our peaceful fresh water rivers ... fewer whales!

23.01.2022 Summer SAIL SALE! ATTENTION sea kayakers, kayak fishermen and recreational canoe paddlers: To ensure that the Summer of 2019 kicks off on the right note, Acacia Canoe Sales and Hire is knocking 15% off the retail price of all high quality Pacific Action Sail kits and 10% off the price of accessory packs until the middle of the month. All Pacific Action sail systems utilize a universal mount and include a rigging pack to attach the sail to a sit-on-top, sit-in kayak or canoe.... Here's how this PROMOTION works: - Go to the Pacific Action Product webpage (link below) and select the size and colour of the sail kit you want. (You can use the retail prices shown to calculate your special PROMOTION price e.g. 1.0sqm kits will now be $323, 1.5sqm kits now $357 and 2.2sqm kits now $399.50 etc.) - Contact us to place an order, receive your invoice and make payment. Once payment has been verified, your kit will be dispatched either to us (for collection) or directly to your nominated postal address. - When you receive your kit, go to the Video Section of the PA GALLERY webpage for tutorials showing how to install the sail systems on sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks. SIMPLE! Terms: (1) This offer applies to orders received between 1 December 2019 and 16 December 2019 and only to customers within Australia. (2) All sail kits are covered by the manufacturer's standard one year warranty (Warranty conditions apply). (3) Sail kits are only dispatched when full payment has been received and verified by us. (4) Accepted forms of payment are EFT/net banking (preferred) or cash (no cards). (5) Sail kits are sent via Australia Post and parcel tracking information is provided. Please note that, depending on your location, delivery can take up to 7 business days. Sail size suggestions: 1.0sqm - small to medium (to about 4.1m) sit-on-tops, sit-in kayaks, some larger single sea kayaks 1.5sqm - medium to large (3.6m to 5.8m) sit-on-tops, sit-in kayaks, small canoes 2.2sqm - double/triple sit-on-tops, tandem sea kayaks, other large sit-in craft, larger canoes Please note that this is a rough guide only. Ultimately your choice of sail size will be determined by your experience, skill and on-water confidence ... as well as by the deck room available on your craft to stow a sail when not in use. Of course, firstly make sure the design of your boat is appropriate for this purpose and will allow for the effective use of a sail once installed. With Christmas fast approaching, this promotion should make is easier to justify treating yourself to a new sail, or even to give one as a gift for that special paddling friend!

22.01.2022 Paddlers new to sea kayaking often have difficulty understanding and accepting the advice of experienced paddlers that narrower (i.e. more tippy) boats are usually better suited to rough water applications. The following video from Kayak Hipster uses simple diagrams to illustrate how the primary stability of a full-beam sea kayak can quickly become a liability as conditions become more unpredictable. Of course those who only ever paddle in calmer waters (e.g. estuaries, channels and tidal river sections) will probably find little advantage in a narrower craft other than a small increase in hull speed.

22.01.2022 The Jackson AntiX quickly earned its reputation as the consummate white water all-rounder for those wanting to bring play, river running and creeking together into a single boat. Now, after three years of continuous assessment, Jackson has further refined the design and released an updated AntiX 2.0 for 2021. With masterful reshaping of its full planing hull, the new Antix 2.0 is now substantially faster, surfs like no other, stays on the surface and squirts with less effor...t than ever. As Jackson tells us: "It runs rivers well, it runs creeks well and it’s the best for play in its class, bar none!" The AntiX 2.0 is expected to be available for release in Australia in the first few months of 2021, with pre-order recommended to make sure you get the size and colour you want. Contact us by the end of November if you need further information or to place an order. In the meantime, enjoy the following promo video for the 2.0 ... if this doesn't get your paddling juices flowing then nothing will!

21.01.2022 And now for something completely different! Andreas Wannerstedt (Swedish designer & motion graphics artist) presents for your viewing enjoyment:

20.01.2022 Anyone in Queensland or NSW not living in a bubble will be aware of the wildfires that have ravaged both states for several weeks now ... and that continue to be a threat as hot, dry conditions show no sign of easing. Those areas that have been subject to significant fire damage include many that are well known to both canoeists and other outdoor adventurers alike. White water paddlers in both Queensland and NSW have always held a particular fondness for the Nymboida distr...ict west of Grafton. Over many years they frequented both the Nymboida Canoe Centre's iconic Goolang Creek slalom/downriver course and the mighty Nymboida River and its tributaries. Unfortunately the community in and around Nymboida has recently experienced a level of bushfire devastation that can only be described as catastrophic. So what can paddlers do to help? The following article from the Grafton Daily Examiner provides information about organisations and places where donations can be received to support the local relief effort. So come on paddlers ... remember the good times, the camaraderie and the assistance provided to paddlers by the locals ... and donate what you can to help this community get back on its feet!

16.01.2022 Shoulder dislocation is the cause of many an avid white water paddler's decision to tone down their paddling activities or even to quit the sport altogether. Although those either with lower upper-body muscle mass or whose memories of their 40's have long since faded are probably most at risk, the fact remains that such injury can potentially affect any white water paddler on any trip. As with most aspects of paddling, the best way to reduce the chance of injury is to employ correct technique and posture. This short article focuses mainly on maintaining a "power position" with your arms ... and being continually aware of this as you paddle may just help to keep you on the water for longer.

16.01.2022 Jackson White Water Kayaks 2020 For some time now Jackson Kayaks USA has been known for its extensive range of whitewater kayak models. Over recent years that reputation has held up even while other manufacturers pared down their own product offerings or closed down their production operations altogether. However, as a result of declining consumer demand, Jackson has announced that, as of 2020, it will be reducing its whitewater range and that "only the Nirvana, Rock Star,... Antix, and Zen will be sold through dealers". Other models may still be available, but will be made only when there are sufficient orders to allow for a minimum batch run (50 units). Kayaks like the 2007 Super Fun, 2010 All Star, Karma, Fun 1 and Little Hero will still be available, but by special order only. If anyone wants a Jackson whitewater model that can no longer be routinely accessed through Acacia Canoes, please let us know and we will endeavour to find out if/when another batch run is/will be available. Unfortunately this does mean that some models may now be quite difficult to obtain, while others will still be available but with significant time delays between order and delivery.

16.01.2022 You have to give it to the French for planning ahead! With this much prep time it's likely that French slalom paddlers should do pretty well in 2024.

14.01.2022 Many white water paddlers will have enjoyed the scenic paddle from the Mann River Nature Reserve down to the Nymboida river. This wasteland of devastation created by the bushfires is just plain heart breaking!

11.01.2022 Finally, a video that sums up exactly what the internet is really all about ... cute, cuddly little animals of course!

11.01.2022 Nevis Bluff kayak paddles. Testing 1..2..3.. The OrigiNZ Nevis Bluff was once widely regarded as one of the best value for money white water kayak paddles in Australia. Unfortunately, declining sales of quality paddle gear and accessories over recent years has seen the Nevis Bluff become yet another casualty of the rationalization of importer inventories. At Acacia Canoes we felt that the demise of the Nevis Bluff left a gaping hole in the white water paddle sector, espec...ially for those seeking a super-tough, dependable all-round paddle that wouldn't break the bank. We have therefore decided to test out the local waters again by bringing in a small trial shipment in sizes 192, 194 and 198 cms. Features: - asymmetric (45 degree feather) blades with large (430cm x 190cm) surface area for added power and acceleration - fibreglass reinforced Nylon 12 blades provide stiffness and amazing impact absorption for demanding Aussie rivers - suitable for paddlers from beginner to expert for touring, river play, creeking, freestyle and even the surf - blades mounted on a fibreglass shaft with locator - paddle weight approx. 1130g The Nevis Bluff was previously great value at its RRP of $199, however we are selling the paddles from our trial shipment for only $175 until sold out (PLEASE NOTE: pick-up only at this stage). Hopefully, there will be sufficient paddler interest this time around to allow us to start restocking these paddles on a more permanent basis.

10.01.2022 Plastic white water kayaks are not normally associated with being speedy through the water. However in this video Dane Jackson proves that, given the right conditions, they can match it with the quickest as he rides the roller coaster that is Tenaya Creek at speeds of up to 36 mph (58 kmph). Do you get the impression he’s having fun?

08.01.2022 Another failed wet season in SE Queensland ... sigh!!! Oh well, at least we can pass the time by watching other paddlers enjoying themselves. The little plastic guy in this video had quite an eventful trip, although his waterfall technique needs a bit of work. Anyone think that looks like a North Queensland crocodile?

08.01.2022 For your viewing enjoyment ... some more antics from Dane Jackson in his Antix:

08.01.2022 Christmas holiday canoe/kayak hire Notice: As Christmas day 2020 falls on a Friday and Acacia Canoes is not open Wednesdays/Thursdays/Sundays and public holidays, when we close at 5.00PM Tuesday 22 December we will not reopen again until 9.00AM Tuesday 29 December. As such, it will not be possible to arrange pickups/returns of hire craft during this period. Sorry for any inconvenience.

06.01.2022 Well it's dry as a dead dingo's donger around S.E. Queensland at the moment and, despite intermittent showers across parts of Queensland and NSW last week, dangerous wildfires seem to be flaring up everywhere. Perhaps we should all be heading off to Patagonia ... I hear they may have a little bit of the liquid gold to spare!

05.01.2022 Thinking about a new boat for the upcoming wet season, but can't decide between a creeker and a playboat? Well what about one one boat that does it all? Check out this walkthrough video of the Antix, Jackson's latest lightweight creeker/river runner/ river play machine. The Antix comes in two sizes (M and L) and is available by order through Acacia Canoe Sales and Hire for $1895 ex our Brisbane outlet. Contact us today for more information.

04.01.2022 Is it safe to come out yet? Acacia Canoes has been quiet for quite a few months now. From time to time we peek out from under our upturned canoes to see if the coast is clear ... clear from this nasty COVID-19 virus that is! While things are looking grim in other parts of the country (notably Victoria), it seems Queensland is escaping the worst of it ... SO FAR! Our Facebook posts and customer updates may have tapered off in recent times, however we ARE still open for busi...ness ... and will remain so to the extent that the latest Government health warnings and restrictions allow. To help us manage the COVID-19 safety of our staff and customers, we ask that those intending to visit Acacia Canoe Sales and Hire's Business premises provide prior notification (Phone 07 3276 7576 during Business Hours) of their intentions. Also, if you are experiencing ANY signs of cold or flu, please delay your visit until such time as you have fully recovered. Unfortunately, as there is no clear end in sight to this pandemic, this measure will remain in place for the foreseeable future. To all our loyal customers and the paddling community in general, please keep in mind that this pandemic IS REAL; and that social distancing, hand washing and appropriate use of face masks are currently the only real tools we have to fight against it. Despite some community perception that only the elderly are at risk, international data clearly shows some countries with high mortality rates in the under 50 age group. Even more disturbing are indicators that this virus may hold serious future medical implications even for the young and fit. We therefore urge everyone to isolate where possible (going paddling is a great way to do this!), be mindful of the health of others and, most importantly, STAY SAFE!

03.01.2022 OK ... so this video has absolutely nothing to do with paddling! However any canoeist with an appreciation of the finer points of canoe/kayak design and engineering should enjoy it anyway. (Unfortunately this video was received without source data. If you are the IP rights holder and object to its posting then please contact us with evidence of ownership and we will remove the post.)

01.01.2022 Cheap SUP paddles anyone? The US made Carlisle Taboo SUP paddle comprises a high impact polypropylene blade on a fully clad aluminium shaft. Two snap-in T-grip handles allow the paddle length to be set at either 190cm or 208cm. It previously sold here with a RRP of $177. We have a couple of Taboo paddles left in stock, however it seems their 208cm T-grip handles decided to go walkabout without telling anyone! So, if you are after a cheap SUP paddle with a length of 190cm then you can pick one up (while stocks last) for a mere $65. First in, first served ... pick up only.
