24.01.2022 Get in early. Places are limited!

23.01.2022 Being in the bush and learning in nature isn't all the bush school program engages in. We believe that education environments should reflect the real world. Often education sites can seem like another world. Last Thursday at the Balhannah learning pod we were using a reciprocating saw to cut off some very stubborn rusty bolts. The bush site had an old bench that was in disrepair and we thought we would rebuild it. Even some 5 year olds had a go. Everyone involved remembered the 'blood bubble'. That's the zone around you when you use potentially dangerous tools. If anyone enters this zone you have to be aware and ensure no one is injured. I love hearing a child shout out "shes in your Blood Bubble!"

21.01.2022 While wandering through the bush one of the kids spotted a koala. 10 foot above her was her baby, practicing being an adult. The young koala spotter sat in the grass and watched with awe. "I could sit here all day and watch this" she said. (at our pods you can). I called over a nearby girl and said have a look, koalas. She said "yeah, but do you know how to make dust clouds". Some kids don't see a lot of koalas while some see a lot of koalas, but have only discovered how to make dust clouds.

21.01.2022 One of the core routines at our bush pod is journalling. It is a great way to cement an experience into our brains. This girl drew and wrote about an interesting discovery. The detail on the bugs is incredible considering they were about 3 mm's long. (the bugs were trying to make babies).

19.01.2022 Chatting with a parent while we watched her daughter making her cubby comfortable by putting lots of green grass on the cubby ground (floor), Mum said, "I haven't seen her smile like this for ages." This is not an unusual comment. Children should be smiling and laughing everyday, just as parents and educators should be smiling and laughing with children everyday too.

13.01.2022 This looks like a list of things you learn at a bush school

09.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who helped make this terms learning pod a beautiful experience. The families, the staff and all the people that had worked behind the scenes. Thank you Niki Buchan for the beautiful photos. We would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. Not only did the children learn from the experience, but all involved learned. From how to dodge hopper ants, to how to create a peaceful learning experience that could connect people to people and people to nature. We are taking everything we learnt from this experience, and will be creating new experiences in 2021 that will connect our growing community with nature and each other. Keep an eye on this page to see up and coming announcements. Cheers from Acacia team

08.01.2022 During our Balhannah learning pod bush day, a girl (who had been building a fort for a couple of hours) said she was bored. "How lucky to find the time to be bored" I said. I told her, if I get the time to be bored I like to chill on a log and watch the birds. So that's what she did. 20 minutes later I saw her hugging a tree. "What type of tree is this", she asked. "Don't know" I said. "Maybe we can find out next week". She thought that was a great idea. Sometimes when learning environments can slow down enough for kids to get bored, they allow unexpected learning opportunities to arise. Looks like I will have to bring my field guide to native trees to next weeks bush school day.

07.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who helped with our first day at the Balhannah learning pod. It was a huge success. The main focus for the day was cubby building. But like the sly fox we tricked everyone. Because, while cubby building, was the activity, the learning was discovering the bush, and its wildlife, working with new friends, identifying natural landmarks as boarders, testing your resilience, noticing the environment, and learning how to look out for yourself. By the way, does anyone know what that white worm is?

07.01.2022 As we plan for 2021 and the Acacia Bush POD's are gaining momentum, we are gathering expressions of interest and registration details for a POD in the Southern Suburbs, could this be for your family? Our POD's are one day a week in different locations around Adelaide, and are support for those who home school or "unschool". We are currently looking at the area between Blackwood and Kuitpo as a rough guide, although the day and location is yet to be decided. We have some intere...sted families, and an educator on board, and it would be helpful to have a rough idea of numbers and ages of children. Please follow this link and get in touch! https://acaciaconnectededucation.com.au/enrolement/ (scroll down to the second item on the page, the Southern Learning Pod)

06.01.2022 Mud play. First walk through the bush to the clay mine. Second collect your booty, and get it back up the hill. Third, crush the clay and add water in our giant clay crusher. Fourth, knead it and create on our stupidly hot bench. Fifth speed dry it on our stupidly hot bench. Sixth, head out bush and watch koalas.

03.01.2022 An exciting opportunity is available for any registered teachers with an ABN, to become part of the Acacia bush school team. We are looking for energetic nature loving teachers to help run the three learning pods that will begin in 2021. The positions are part time at this stage. If this sounds like something you would love to do, or if you know someone who was made to do this then please click this link https://acaciaconnectededucation.com.au/expression-of-inter for contact details.

03.01.2022 At the Balhannah learning pod the bush affords so much wonder. It could be something as awesome as a huge centipede, or something as innocuous as a gum nut.
