22.01.2022 Anyone in Queensland or NSW not living in a bubble will be aware of the wildfires that have ravaged both states for several weeks now ... and that continue to be a threat as hot, dry conditions show no sign of easing. Those areas that have been subject to significant fire damage include many that are well known to both canoeists and other outdoor adventurers alike. White water paddlers in both Queensland and NSW have always held a particular fondness for the Nymboida distr...ict west of Grafton. Over many years they frequented both the Nymboida Canoe Centres iconic Goolang Creek slalom/downriver course and the mighty Nymboida River and its tributaries. Unfortunately the community in and around Nymboida has recently experienced a level of bushfire devastation that can only be described as catastrophic. So what can paddlers do to help? The following article from the Grafton Daily Examiner provides information about organisations and places where donations can be received to support the local relief effort. So come on paddlers ... remember the good times, the camaraderie and the assistance provided to paddlers by the locals ... and donate what you can to help this community get back on its feet!

22.01.2022 NYMBOIDA HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATION and GOOLANG CREEK Some of you may be aware of recent rumblings from within Clarence Valley Council (CVC) seemingly aimed at the Council acquiring and recommissioning the Nymboida Hydro-electric Power Station near Grafton. Of course, if this were to occur, the ramifications of water flowing again down Goolang Creek would be of interest to all Australian white water paddlers. CVC was set to discuss this issue at an Ordinary Council Meeting o...n 26 June 2018. Unfortunately, the Minutes of that meeting dont seem to offer anything positive for paddlers. Some of the items raised and their status from the perspective of Essential Energy (the Power Station operator) include: Item: Release of water for environmental and recreational purposes Status: there is no plan by EE to invest in facilities to reinstate recreational purposes ie canoeing and rafting. Item: Protection of heritage value of the power generation buildings (including equipment installed within the facility) Status: Item complete. Item: Nymboida power generation buildings and ancillary infrastructure to be decommissioned and secured Status: Item complete. From time to time we peek out from under our upturned canoes to see if the coast is clear ... clear from this nasty COVID-19 virus that is! While things are looking grim in other parts of the country (notably Victoria), it seems Queensland is escaping the worst of it ... SO FAR! Our Facebook posts and customer updates may have tapered off in recent times, however we ARE still open for busi...ness ... and will remain so to the extent that the latest Government health warnings and restrictions allow. To help us manage the COVID-19 safety of our staff and customers, we ask that those intending to visit Acacia Canoe Sales and Hires Business premises provide prior notification (Phone 07 3276 7576 during Business Hours) of their intentions. Also, if you are experiencing ANY signs of cold or flu, please delay your visit until such time as you have fully recovered. 12.01.2022 Paddlers entering more challenging open-water environments should ideally have sound bracing skills and be proficient in the kayak roll. However every paddler needs a Plan B. In most cases that involves having to re-enter your kayak in deep water ... and sometimes without assistance from others. Although the theory of deep-water self-rescue is relatively straightforward, actually being able to do it in the often gnarly and hostile conditions that caused you to flip in the first place is another matter! The following short video runs through some of the basics of the technique. Remember ... this manoeuvre is only really of any value if you can successfully execute it in ALL likely weather/water conditions, not just in calm waters.

09.01.2022 Paddlers new to sea kayaking often have difficulty understanding and accepting the advice of experienced paddlers that narrower (i.e. more tippy) boats are usually better suited to rough water applications. The following video from Kayak Hipster uses simple diagrams to illustrate how the primary stability of a full-beam sea kayak can quickly become a liability as conditions become more unpredictable. Of course those who only ever paddle in calmer waters (e.g. estuaries, channels and tidal river sections) will probably find little advantage in a narrower craft other than a small increase in hull speed.

08.01.2022 Shoulder dislocation is the cause of many an avid white water paddlers decision to tone down their paddling activities or even to quit the sport altogether. Although those either with lower upper-body muscle mass or whose memories of their 40s have long since faded are probably most at risk, the fact remains that such injury can potentially affect any white water paddler on any trip. As with most aspects of paddling, the best way to reduce the chance of injury is to employ correct technique and posture. This short article focuses mainly on maintaining a "power position" with your arms ... and being continually aware of this as you paddle may just help to keep you on the water for longer.

05.01.2022 Plastic white water kayaks are not normally associated with being speedy through the water. However in this video Dane Jackson proves that, given the right conditions, they can match it with the quickest as he rides the roller coaster that is Tenaya Creek at speeds of up to 36 mph (58 kmph). 03.01.2022 Jackson White Water Kayaks 2020 For some time now Jackson Kayaks USA has been known for its extensive range of whitewater kayak models. Over recent years that reputation has held up even while other manufacturers pared down their own product offerings or closed down their production operations altogether. However, as a result of declining consumer demand, Jackson has announced that, as of 2020, it will be reducing its whitewater range and that "only the Nirvana, Rock Star,... Antix, and Zen will be sold through dealers". Other models may still be available, but will be made only when there are sufficient orders to allow for a minimum batch run (50 units). Kayaks like the 2007 Super Fun, 2010 All Star, Karma, Fun 1 and Little Hero will still be available, but by special order only. If anyone wants a Jackson whitewater model that can no longer be routinely accessed through Acacia Canoes, please let us know and we will endeavour to find out if/when another batch run is/will be available. Unfortunately this does mean that some models may now be quite difficult to obtain, while others will still be available but with significant time delays between order and delivery.

02.01.2022 Cheap SUP paddles anyone? The US made Carlisle Taboo SUP paddle comprises a high impact polypropylene blade on a fully clad aluminium shaft. Two snap-in T-grip handles allow the paddle length to be set at either 190cm or 208cm. It previously sold here with a RRP of $177. We have a couple of Taboo paddles left in stock, however it seems their 208cm T-grip handles decided to go walkabout without telling anyone! So, if you are after a cheap SUP paddle with a length of 190cm then you can pick one up (while stocks last) for a mere $65. First in, first served ... pick up only.
