25.01.2022 Respect and courtesy are fundamental values in Martial Arts. ... The first type of respect is self-respect. This begins with treating your body with the respect it deserves. You know what this means eat right, exercise, get enough sleep. It also means holding yourself accountable while being your own best friend. The next type of respect is respect toward others. Being respectful and courteous of others is a sign of emotional maturity. It builds strong bonds of mutual respect, friendship and it creates an environment for great personal relationship and constructive professional relationships. Respect and courtesy to oneself and to others is a true sign of a black belt mentality. So how can you get into the habit of being respectful and courteous? Just as you would any other habit very deliberately. Consciously and intentionally be respectful to others and watch what happens. Do this consistently for the next 21 days. That’s how long it takes to establish a new habit. In Martial Arts class, if you wonder if you should bow, just bow. If you wonder if you should give a polite greeting, give one. If in doubt, choose the more polite and courteous option. www.academyckd.com.au

24.01.2022 : : One of the core values of the Choi Kwang Do Martial Art is On-Yu. The closest English word to this Korean concept is Gentleness. ... When our junior students are asked about gentleness, they often tell me that it means not to punch or kick anybody, or to say mean things about people. This is mostly correct, but true gentleness is more than a physical act. It is a habit and behaviour, and it should not be seen as a weakness. In fact, it is the opposite. A person displaying true gentleness will be courteous, gentle and empathetic in their dealings with others regardless of how the other person is behaving. A gentle person also needs to have great internal strength, fortitude, confidence and when necessary, assertiveness. The person who lives by martial arts values has an internal moral compass. They are balanced in their behaviours and emotions. When it comes to gentleness, they have no need or desire to display anti-social, offensive or boisterous behaviour. So our message to our students this week is this: "Gentleness is a display of true strength". This is the habit that we will all be working on this week in our personal lives. "The habits we have on the mat are the habits we need for life" www.academyckd.com.au

24.01.2022 We have all had moments in life when we have been at our very best. We were on top of our game, we produced our best output, and we performed at a high level. We were "in the zone"... What probably helped us to be "in the zone" and at our best is the fact that we had: 1. Mental Clarity 2. Physical Energy 3. Emotional calm How great could your life be if you were always in this state from the moment you got up until when you went to bed? This may not be very realistic, but there are many things that you can do to stack the odds in your favour of being at your best most of the time. One way of doing this is to understand that our lives are based on simple things that we can be doing well each day to ensure that we feel better and perform better. Here are six things that you can focus on to be at your best: 1. Fuel your body with quality food 2. Surround yourself with positive people 3. Limit the negatives in your life such as stress 4. Get enough sleep and downtime 5. Connect more with those people who matter the most in your life 6 Get enough exercise While we are probably not perfect at doing them all the time, by focusing on these things, we can ensure that we are happy, healthy and energetic, and are setting ourselves up to be at our best most of the time. At the Academy of Choi Kwang Do, we believe in the martial arts mindset of continual improvement. While we may find things a challenge now if we keep working them, we will get there. So, if you do these simple things on a continual basis, you will get better at them and you can set yourself up to live life at your very best. www.academyckd.com.au

23.01.2022 ... . A quote from Rick English goes like this "A black belt is nothing more than a belt that goes around your waist. Being a black belt is a state of mind and attitude"... The CKD martial arts belt system is an essential part of students progress in martial arts. At each belt level, we get new goals to achieve. The belt rank system breaks up our curriculum into easy to learn chunks. And, as Rick says, the belt itself is a piece of material, it is something that holds your martial arts jacket together. The knowledge that you are a martial artist is what is more important. Ask any layperson about what it means to be a martial artist and the general opinion will be that you are a person that thinks a little differently to the average person. It is all about having a different state of mind, holding yourself accountable, being self-disciplined and having the belief that you can be a better version of yourself than you were yesterday. So, can you wear a black belt? Yes, of course, you can any time you wish. I can easily sell you one for $40. But.... can you earn a black belt and be a black belt?...well that takes a lot more work, but with sweat and determination, we can get you there. ;-) "The habits you practice on the mat are the habits you need for life" www.academyckd.com.au

22.01.2022 .... . How would you make the world a better place to live?... You would probably start at a very basic level & draw up a list of universal rules or values that people could use to interact properly with others in this world. That list would guide us in making the right decisions and the way we behave That list would apply to running a business, or a sporting club, or even more importantly, guide your kids in maturing into teenagers and then into adults? What would that list look like? Maybe it could be Stephen Covey's "Seven Habits" or maybe the Ten commandments? The principles of Choi Kwang Do are just that. They are what we use to guide our personal development. They are the traditional values that parents teach their kids, and if the whole world follows them, we would live in a better place. The CKD Principles are what makes Choi Kwang Do a "martial art" and not just a fighting skill. Here they are: Humility Integrity Gentleness Perseverance Self Control Unbreakable Spirit When people train in Choi Kwang Do, they are encouraged to live their lives with these values. It is our way of making our world a better place to live in......one person at a time. "the habits we have on the mat are the habits we need for life" www.academyckd.com.au

20.01.2022 . When we talk about self-defence, we usually think physical threats and of people who intentionally want to hurt us through their actions.... But what about our mental wellbeing? You are probably under attack more than what you realise, every day when it comes to your mental health. We know that attitudes are contagious. The attitudes of others can unintentionally rub off onto us. I am sure that you will agree that a positive attitude is better for good health than having a pessimistic or negative attitude. So what are the signs that your attitude is under attack? Look at what you expose yourself to each day. Things like: Negative people Peer pressure Gossip Advertising The Media i.e. TV, magazines, books, music and social media Stress from work and Financial worries These can all wear you down so that you are not at your best. So taking some lessons from our martial arts self-defence, identify the mental threat and: Avoid it Get rid of it Block it out Work out a defence or coping strategy Ask for help When we do martial arts, we gain confidence and mental strength to deal with physical threats. Self-confidence will also give you the strength to be in control of your life so that mental threats have less effect. And a final word of advice......don't forget to smile. www.academyckd.com.au

20.01.2022 Once there were 3 builders.... The first built very good quality, strong houses, but was a rip-off, overcharging customers, charging for things he didn't do and was always late and lied about delivery times. The second was very honest, looked after his customers, charged a fair price, was on time with building projects, but the workmanship was terrible. The houses were weak and didn't measure up to the building codes. The third was honest, kept the customer informed, charged fairly and built good quality houses that would stand up to the test of time. I am pretty sure that after asking around, you would use the third builder in the above story. Now the famous Greek philosopher Aristotle believed that to be successful in life you need both Techne and Ethos Techne = art, craft, technical skill or physical abilities Ethos = ethics, morals, respect or good principles The story goes that Aristotle developed this understanding from training in a popular form of greek martial arts - wrestling. He learnt that to be successful and popular wrestler he needed good technique and good principles i.e to fight well and to fight fair. Like Aristotle believed and like our third builder, to be successful at many things, people need good technical skills AND good moral principles. So the Martial Arts Mindset challenge this week is to use the martial arts techne and ethos mindset in your everyday life. 19.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone who tested on the weekend. Great job. Keep working on being a little bit better than what you were yesterday. Remember that doing martial arts is all about physical and mental progress and the journey that we undertake take should be that of personal growth.

17.01.2022 For all the dads that missed out on the Dads Train Too class on the weekend, Mr Daly shared a special strike technique that he called the "Clip-under-the-ear strike" to be used when kids misbehave! :-) Seriously though, we don't promote striking children as punishment, but this strike was lots of fun anyway.

17.01.2022 - : A funny thing happened a while ago.... We sometimes dress a male instructor up in a padded suit so our Ladies Only class can try out their self-defence skills with a little more force and intent. Last time we did that, before the lesson the ladies joked that they could not possibly strike or do anything to hurt the instructor because they respected him. They were sure that any responses would be done with control and gentleness. Once they were faced with an attack scenario they went from being smiling and joking to aggressive and mean at the flick of a switch. Some really opened a big can of whoop-ass. The lesson to learn is that technique is vitally important when it comes to self-defence, but ultimately there is one primary factor above all others that determines the outcome of a violent altercation. Some call it a Killer Instinct. It is actually a fight or flight response. It is the "light-switch moment" when your subconscious mind kicks in and takes over your conscious mind for your survival and well-being. In fact, the fight or flight response can be the deciding factor in ANY altercation and when it kicks in, your reactions are decided by the habits you have built during your training. So, the lesson is, train yourself to be technically perfect to the point where your self-defence skills are habit and trust that your fight or flight response has your back. Train hard, train perfectly and train to survive. www.academyckd.com.au

17.01.2022 Students and Parents, The Academy will be closed on Saturday 3rd to Monday 5th due to the Public Holiday long weekend.

16.01.2022 There is a line of thought that suggests that we have been pre-programmed by thousands of years of evolution to accept a negative view of the world. ... This is because we have evolved to immediately look for the threats to our wellbeing. Animals behave this way to stay safe from predators. This is not a bad thing.... it is what has kept our species alive all these years. When we are on the lookout for danger, or the people or things that are going to harm us, we are actually focusing on the negatives. This is how some people live their lives without realising it. In his book, High Power Habits, one of Brendon Burchard's underlying messages is that to reach our full potential it is better if we foster a positive mindset. His research has shown that optimistic and positive people actually achieve more in their lives. Being optimistic doesn't give you superhuman strength. It just allows you to focus your mind on beneficial outcomes and gives you the focus to achieve them. Another positive character trait is "Having an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE" which will help you focus your mind on the positives that have happened. So to bring some more positivity into your life, why not make it a habit to express more gratitude to the people you interact with each day? A simple "thank you" that is said with meaning is very powerful indeed. "The habits we have on the mat are the habits that we need for life" www.academyckd.com.au

15.01.2022 Late post. How much mischief can a bunch of kids get up to in 3 hours? Quite a lot it seems. Last weekend, the Academy of CKD parents dropped their kids in for an innocent 3-hour martial arts session so they could get the Christmas shopping out of the way. Little did they know that we were going to return the kids with texta pen all over their faces!!!... As you can see, we had a truth or dare session with the highlight being "Draw a mustache on yourself" The photo's say it all. We also had a number of team challenges that taught teamwork and co-operation. The kids had so much fun, they want to do the same again next year! :-)

14.01.2022 We had a special guest in the ladies only class tonight. Young Luka wanted to tag along with mum in her big brother's uniform, and doesn't the smile say it all.

14.01.2022 Earning a martial arts black belt requires one to keep going when others would quit and to accomplish that, one must master the ability to be TENACIOUS.... People who are TENACIOUS grab hold of an idea and refuse to give up until they’ve succeeded. They are persistent, and they are also strategic thinkers. They are never really satisfied with their methods and work towards constant improvement based on what they learn from setbacks. Because of this mentality, they constantly increase their success year after year. Here’s a small assignment to help you master the skill of being TENACIOUS: Exercise: Turn a Setback into a Success 1. Think back over the past year about something you tried and failed at. Write a sentence about what went wrong. 2. Then write out what could’ve happened if it went right. 3. Next list out more specifics on how you would try it again, learning from your past mistakes and setbacks. For example, maybe you tried losing weight on a fad diet from a magazine for three months but didn’t get anywhere so you gave up. If you had done things differently, then you could’ve lost 10 kilo's and felt a new lease of life To accomplish that, you can retry but this time get a private trainer, seek out a nutritionist, join a group of like-minded people with the same goal and rework your daily schedule to bring these people into your life. 4. Once you have the details sorted out, the next step is to get to work and turn your setback into a success based on what you’ve put together. As you can see, once you begin to make a plan, the setback will seem easier to accomplish! When you begin to think about success instead of the negatives that come from failing, then it is much easier to try again. The key to success is your ability to be TENACIOUS when other’s quit. Reply with a if you plan on applying this skill! "The habits we use on the mat are the habits we need for life" www.academyckd.com.au

14.01.2022 Even if we don’t realise it, our lives are made up of many rituals. ... From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, our day is filled with various routines. These rituals can be beneficial or detrimental. A friend who comes to mind had a morning breakfast ritual that consisted of a can of Coke and a sausage roll from the local servo while they rushed to work. Once in a while, this may not be too bad but think about the negative effects of this ritual over twenty years! A better morning ritual may start out with a large glass of water followed by a vigorous workout and a light healthy breakfast. Initially, this ritual might be hard to develop but think about the long-term positive effects this ritual will have over twenty years. Remember that "Bad habits are easy to start and hard to break, while GOOD HABITS are hard to start and easy to break" Positive rituals in our lives can help us to keep our good habits going. www.academyckd.com.au

13.01.2022 .... When it comes to martial arts, forget what you have experienced at gyms.... Most people who go to the gym probably go on their own, work by themselves and not have any personal trainer to help. In fact, the only time a trainer helps is usually at sign up time, on the first visit to get people started. The Academy of Choi Kwang Do is not like a gym. We have structured classes, structured learning, curriculum for every step along the way, and friendly experienced instructors. In every class you will: * Train and learn together with other students * Have a qualified instructor helping you to improve * Make friends who have the same goals * Enjoy a varied exercise curriculum that keeps you motivated and progressing More importantly, we have no egos. You will not feel any competitive attitudes, you will not feel judged, or feel like you have to measure up to an unachievable standard. So, keep us in mind. If you need to work out, lose a few inches, get fit, and be around positive people, then give us a call. And by the way, you will be learning a valuable skill that may save your bacon one day. www.academyckd.com.au

13.01.2022 Pil Seung, here are some announcements for this week.

12.01.2022 At some point in your life, there will be a situation where you will have to decide to quit or keep going. For some people, the act of quitting is very easy because they possess a quitters mindset. ... They are in the habit of quitting. The horizontal line in our diagram represents a point in time where we make a decision. At that moment we can make any of several choices. Some of those choices are "below the line" and some are "above the line". The choices that are below the line will strip you of opportunities and your goals. Those behaviours are: Laying blame Making excuses Denial, and of course, Quitting At one time or another, we have all chosen behaviour that is below the line. Each time, we have allowed ourselves to be a VICTIM. A victim is someone who is not in control of their outcomes. Life just happens" to a victim and they are always "dealing with" or "coping with" something that they refuse to take ownership of. The behaviours above the line demonstrate a RESPONSIBLE mindset. They allow you to learn from your mistakes. Some of the behaviours that are above the line are: Acknowledging that you have made a mistake Taking responsibility and ownership for your actions Making informed choices Pursuing personal freedom Responsible people are very much in control of their lives. They "handle" situations and see mistakes as "learning opportunities" for growth and improvement. As a result, they exude humility and develop trusting relationships. These behaviours open up a wider range of opportunities and lead them on a path to greater freedom. Where do you want to live? The choice is yours...every day "The habits we use on the mat are the habits we need for life" www.academyckd.com.au

10.01.2022 ... ! Choi Kwang Do is a martial art program designed for everyday people.... Not everyone is a high performing athlete, not everyone is fit and young, and not everyone can touch their toes. We teach martial arts to people of all abilities, fitness levels and ages. This is what makes Choi Kwang Do so attractive to many of our students. We believe that martial arts can be, and should be done by everyone, not just for the self-defence aspect, but also for the physical and mental wellbeing that it brings. While maybe some of our younger students may not need it, many of our older students are very pleased with the new lease of life they have experienced since joining. Here are some of their comments: Mark Quadrell: "I used to struggle to tie up my shoelaces, now it is much easier" Gwen Laffin: " I joined so that I could keep up with the grandkids but now I know that it is good for my mind too" Michael Walker: "The self-discipline is doing a lot of good for me" Lucy Carson; "My knees have been injured by running, but the martial arts training keeps me free of knee pain" Danae McCallum: "Choi has been great for rehabilitation after knee surgery" So, no matter where you are at with your fitness, we believe that you can do it. Give it a go. I am sure that your body will thank you. www.academyckd.com.au

07.01.2022 Happy Birthday Shannon! Shannon is turning 15 on the weekend and celebrated tonight at the Academy. Pil Seung Shannon, we hope you have a great day.

07.01.2022 Hey Students and Parents, please check out these announcements for this week!

05.01.2022 ..... . The goal of CKD martial arts is not just to teach self-defence skills.... It is also a way of life. There are 3 goals that CKD is built upon: 1. Self Defence 2. Character development 3. Longevity Students of CKD are encouraged to embrace the art and use it to better their lives. Learning self-defence is an exercise which improves physical health. Learning new skills that promote complex body movements enhances our brain health. The martial art code of behaviour encourages us to develop our character and live together in harmony. We believe that everyone should do CKD for these reasons and make the world a better place. www.academyckd.com.au

05.01.2022 A great fear for parents is having their child kidnapped.... Here are 5 easy word's to teach your child to help save them if they are grabbed by a stranger: "Stop you're not my dad!" (or mum) When yelled loud these words will attract attention. This is what a kidnapper does not want, and it helps the child to communicate exactly who the person is. Sometimes we see an angry parent dealing with their naughty child who is throwing a tantrum and we simply disregard the situation. But these 5 words will remove any doubt in people's minds that this is not the case if your child is grabbed and will more than likely draw their attention and trigger them to come to their aid. Please share this tip with friends and relatives to help keep their kids safe. https://academyckd.com.au/

05.01.2022 ... ... . Adults in their 40's and 50's have been coming to us to restart martial arts training after many years of being out of the game. ... A common theme is that they were injured in their younger years while doing other martial arts styles and had to give up.... but the fire still burns within. What appealed to them is that Choi Kwang Do is easy on the body and joints and can help with rehabilitation from injury. You see, Choi Kwang Do was developed to have no harsh mechanical movements. The natural movements actually strengthens the body's joints and improves mobility. People who have carried injuries from martial arts in the past are discovering a new lease of life that Choi Kwang Do has brought them. We believe that it is not to late to give it another go https://academyckd.com.au/

05.01.2022 .... . Put your hand up if you have an exercise bike, walker, or rowing machine in your house gathering dust?... In fact, a lot of exercise bikes end their usefulness as expensive clothes hangers! This shows how hard it is for people to get motivated and exercise by themselves, despite all those promises made by the infomercials. The truth is that people need an incredible amount of motivation and willpower to exercise on their own. But, there is an easier way that works nearly 100% every time. Simply distract yourself from the exercise by: 1. Turning exercise into a social experience. Exercise with a friend 2. Doing an exercise activity where you continually learn new skills while exercising. 3. Exercising with a group of people who have similar goals. When you do this, exercise becomes less of a chore and more like fun and can be a social activity that you look forward to doing. Martial arts does exactly this and is what we do well at the Academy of CKD. In other words, we turn fitness into fun. www.academyckd.com.au

03.01.2022 ... Being a role model is a powerful way to influence your kids as they grow up.... Kids are like sponges....everything they see and do as they grow up plays a big part in how they turn out as adults. Of course, the people who play an important part in kids' development are parents and grandparents. And it is so easy to do! All you have to do is let the kids see you doing and saying the right things. Exercising and learning new skills together with your kids sets you up as a role model and having positive and enjoyable routines that you do together helps them to develop good habits. We believe that this is so important that we have classes 6 days a week where family groups can learn martial arts together. www.academyckd.com.au

03.01.2022 The human central nervous system is so predictable.... It is predictable to the point that whatever we practice over and over can be triggered to happen without us thinking. This, of course, is what we all know as a habit. When it comes to self-defence, we take advantage of our ability to form habits to keep us safe. We train our reactions to a threat to be automatic. The only way we can make this happen is to have a realistic attack. There is no other way. So the message this week is to train realistically. Ensure that when your training partner works with you, they do so realistically and that when you respond to their threat, you do so with the exact responses that will offer protection. 1. Train with a partner who gives realistic and precise attacks 2. React to their attacks with the exact response that you want to use to incapacitate your attacker 3. Be precise with your targets and weapon usage. Practising with realism is what will keep you safe. www.academyckd.com.au

03.01.2022 As the saying goes, Lose control of your emotions in a fight and your opponent has an ally! ... Every emotion has an appropriate time and place. There is a time to be stern and a time to be compassionate. If we become overly emotional, or if we become emotional when it doesn’t serve us, we lose our ability to think clearly and act appropriately. If, however, we are able to respond with the appropriate emotion, at the appropriate time, with the appropriate intensity, then our emotions work for us rather than against us. An important thing to remember is that you are responsible for your actions. You may not be able to control your thoughts, but you certainly should be able to control what you do. So when you are emotional you might just decide not to say or do anything you could regret later. Logic and emotion are like oil and waterthey don’t mix. Wait until you are calm before you confront someone with an issue or before you make any important decisions. www.academyckd.com.au

01.01.2022 Here's a simple Thai Chicken Soup recipe that is good for a snack, a work lunch or just to throw together when you don't feel like cooking. It is a much healthier alternative to instant noodle soups, can be prepared ahead of time, and cooked in 5 minutes just by adding boiling water.... Even better still, it contains no nasty additives and is gluten-free, low carb and uses real foods. https://fitat60.com/recipes/5-minute-thai-chicken-soup/
