25.01.2022 Tempted to share a hot cross bun with your best mate? Unfortunately hot cross buns can be toxic to dogs and it’s the inoffensive sultana that causes all the tro...uble. Even a small amount of grapes and raisins can be lethal to dogs as it can cause acute kidney failure. While they don’t know what the toxic substance in grapes is, veterinarians do agree that it is both the flesh and the skin that is poisonous to dogs. Because we don't know the exact mechanism that causes a dog to react to grapes/raisins, we also don't know why some dogs can tolerate them while others end up in kidney failure. We do however know that dogs can develop a toxicity to grapes/raisins over time, so just because they have eaten them before, doesn't mean they will continue to be unaffected. Young pup Ellie found out about the risks of raisin toxicity the hard way when she ingested an entire loaf of raisin bread. Her owners brought her to our ARH emergency hospital in Sinnamon Park after they noticed the loaf missing. Ellie seemed happy and healthy, however, if left untreated she may have developed symptoms of kidney failure such as vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, increased thirst and abdominal pain. We helped Ellie to bring up the contents of her stomach and monitored the function of her kidneys through blood tests. She was placed on a drip for 24 hours to help rebalance her body fluids and was given activated charcoal, which traps toxins and chemicals in the body allowing them to be flushed out and not reabsorbed. Ellie was one of the lucky ones whose experience left her with no ongoing medical issues. Take it from her though, as tasty as they look it’s best that your furry mate keeps clear of hot cross buns this Easter!

23.01.2022 Like we need another reason to have a dog, but studies say they do give us a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and death. http://www.news.com.au//n/9b0497dc576a29616dc3fa885a7513ad

18.01.2022 Alternatives to food bowls....More delightful ways to enjoy dinner! Whilst these alternatives may not be right for every home, especially those with multiple d...ogs, for those in a single dog household, this may just help to avoid boredom or destructive behaviours.... Think about how much time your dog likely spends alone. Many of us work and can’t afford doggie daycare, so we’re forced to leave our best friends home alone all day. What does your dog do that whole time? Giving your dog as much stimulation as possible, helps with their mental, physical and emotional well being. An easy way to give them more stimulation in their life is to stop giving meals away for free. Dogs like a challenge, just as much as we do. They love to search and hunt for their food and having your dog earn his dinner can help reduce unwanted behaviours. There are many puzzle toys and treat dispensing toys on the market, but there are some great cheap alternatives below....

08.01.2022 Like what we do with your dog? Have a friend with a dog that could do with the same attention as yours gets? Want to get a discount on your next grooming session? If the answer is yes to all the above then take advantage of our Refer a Friend program.... If your friend books and keeps a grooming appointment with us on or before 30th June 2015 and mentions your name we will give you a 10% discount on your next appointment. Fine print, (you knew there had to be some): This deal is not valid with other offers. If you refer more than 1 friend who meets the criteria above, you are entitled to the same number of discounted appointments as referrals, but only 1 discount can apply to each visit (valid to 30 June 2016)

05.01.2022 It's tick season, keep vigilant and check your animals regularly. Don't rely on tick collars, sprays, drops, chews etc as your only protection. You should also be feeling (while patting) and visually checking your animal daily.

01.01.2022 I know a lot of us think bathing our dogs in winter sounds a little cruel and unnecessary. But a warm bath (with massage) and warm blow drier can feel good and will maintain coat health. Clipping is not necessary as long as the longer coats continue to be brushed out to prevent knots and matting and the hair in front of the eyes is kept clear. Regular nail trimming is important too. So don't overlook your dog's health this winter. Pamper them.
