25.01.2022 MYTH: Refugees leave their countries for better jobs. Refugees flee their country quickly and suddenly, usually because it is no longer safe for them to live there due to war, famine or persecution. They often risk their lives and can't return home. People who come to Australia for better work opportunities are migrants, and while their lives in Australia are often significantly better, they rarely face the same risks as refugees.
24.01.2022 Queensland Health suggests wearing a face mask when you cant stay 1.5 metres away from someone. This album has in-language information on how to wear a mask correctly. Remember you still need to wash your hands and stay home if you are sick, even with a face mask.
24.01.2022 Thank you for the great discussion Multicultural Australia (and the yummy food Mu'ooz Eritrean Restaurant & Catering!) We look forward to working together to advocate for better opportunities for our CALD communities.
23.01.2022 Yesterday marked thirty years since the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. With more than half the world's refugees being children, we need to ensure ALL children have the chance to enjoy a full and happy childhood.

22.01.2022 99 Steps is one of our most important programs, and one we are so proud of. For two years, Access worked with multiple organisations to see what barriers existed for CALD women who wanted - needed - to access domestic and family violence support services. Sadly, there was many. We established a taskforce to conduct a review, analyse research findings, interview community leaders and active community members so we could gain a comprehensive understanding of these barriers. Th...rough this, we came up with 99 Steps in 2017. Through this program, CALD women and children are supported through culturally tailored counselling, legal assistance and warm referral pathways from across the sector to leave situations of domestic and family violence. They are supported along their journey towards safety and recovery - something we all deserve. #WomensHealthWeek

These gatherings are a great opportunity for men of diverse backgrounds to get together and share how uncertainties or anxieties the pandemic may have created, or simply just talk about their past and how theyve got to where they are today. There is always benefit gained from sharing your stories. The next session will be , ... . We will be creating a recurring Facebook event once we have all future dates finalised - keep your eyes peeled for that! Thanks to Multicultural Sports Club for this great photo. 20.01.2022 Last Friday, we opened a new site for our Yarrabilba Exchange at Darrau Avenue with our partner, Lendlease, and the Honourable Shannon Fentiman MP, Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development. Since Access opened the Exchange in 2016, more than 1050 locals have been placed into employment and an extra 330 people have been assisted into an education or training place that suits their needs. We have also linked people into services here Access, like ParentsNext and Disability Employment Services. Moving the Exchange to this new site means we can further enhance services to the local community, adding initiatives such as school-to-work transition programs, small business support and a study centre.
20.01.2022 What are you doing to ensure cultural responsiveness in your workplace? Australia is a multicultural nation, with many workplaces now embracing diversity. At Access alone, staff collectively speak over 100 languages! No-one can be an expert on every culture, but we can be aware of other cultures and how we can be tolerant and respectful. ... Access is offering Culturally Responsive Practice Training to organisations so people can learn exactly that, so that workplaces can be spaces that foster diversity and inclusivity. If youre interested in learning about this for your workplace, please contact us at [email protected].
20.01.2022 We are experiencing an economic downturn, the likes of which we have not seen for over 80 years. Close to 100,000 people seeking asylum have been left with limited support at this time. That includes 16,000 children.... Together with our parent company, Settlement Services International - SSI, Access is urging the government to ensure no child is forced into destitution as a result of COVID-19. Meagre emergency relief programs are not enough. We urge Anne Ruston and Scott Morrison (ScoMo) to ensure #NobodyLeftBehind during COVID-19.
20.01.2022 Say hello to Sophie-Kate, who joined our ParentsNext program two years ago. When she first joined the program, her health challenges were at times so overwhelming, she questioned whether she would be able to achieve her education and career goals. Thankfully, Sophie-Kate's health began to improve and through the assistance of ParentsNext, she was able to study a Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention online.... Sophie-Kate's ParentsNext case worker was also able to access funds to assist her with purchasing a new laptop, which ensured she was able to continue studying online, even beyond her time as a ParentsNext participant. "I'm so very grateful for the assistance I received from ParentsNext as it now means I have the opportunity to develop the qualifications necessary to follow my dreams of working in the Family Intervention Support field."
19.01.2022 Our monthly Mens Gathering now has its own Facebook event! Share with your friends and come along! We cant wait to see you there.

17.01.2022 Access, together with SSI, express our sympathy and support to the victims and families of the sudden and overwhelming devastation in Beirut earlier this week. Our thoughts are with the people of Lebanon and the Lebanese communities in Australia. Our hearts go out to you in your time of sorrow.
17.01.2022 Weve been delivering Harmony on Carmody coffee and food via Wing for a while now - check it out!
17.01.2022 Playgroups are often the first introduction to a hub for many women, who are looking for opportunities for their children rather than themselves. Playgroups offer an invaluable source of support, learning and connection with other families - and from here, women often go on to participate in English lessons, vocational learning and other opportunities for themselves. And because our hubs are based in schools, playgroups also connect hub families with their new school communit...y so friendships form that last for years to come. Of course, because of COVID-19 some of our playgroups now look a little different having switched to playgroup online. But there are still some, like our Fernbrooke State School hub in Ipswich that can meet face to face and play together. No matter if theyre place-based or online, our playgroups provide an opportunity for connection which is something weve all come to appreciate even more during COVID.
15.01.2022 We are a diverse bunch here at Access - both clients and staff - and we wouldnt have it any other way. Check out this below graphic to see the breadth of our clients countries of birth! As you can see the majority of our clients are originally from the Middle East, East Africa and South East Asia - but all are Australians too.
15.01.2022 We know our communities are better when we treat each other with dignity, compassion and respect. That's why it's time to unite the community behind a bold and positive vision of a fairer Australia - it's time to create an Australian Charter of Human Rights & Freedoms. We have added our name to the call for an Australian Charter of Human Rights and Freedom; add yours as well. https://charterofrights.org.au/
15.01.2022 When JobKeeper ends, and other raised supplement payments like JobSeeker and Youth Allowance are reduced in March 2021, many people will once again be forced to live on the poverty line, or below. When this pandemic is over, we cannot let people slip through the cracks. Thats why Access, and our parent company, Settlement Services International - SSI, have put our name to the Raise the Rate Campaign, which calls on the Federal Government to raise the rate of welfare support payments - for good. We encourage you to add your voice to the campaign, to ensure no one is left behind: https://raisetherate.org.au/
15.01.2022 We have never been more proud to introduce a program like the Road to Independence. For many, getting a license is the first step of many to independence. It can make the simplest of tasks easier, like going to the shops, or picking the kids up from school. For some though, getting a license can be almost impossible - too expensive, too daunting, or too hard for reasons many wouldn't be aware of. This is the case for some of the women in the 99 Steps program, our domestic and... family violence program. We are so excited to launch this program. This program, fully funded by Transurban, will enable us to emotionally and financially support our 99 Steps clients to get their licence - teaching them road rules and regulations, paying for a learner's permit and lessons, and then paying for a driving test and licence. We are excited and honoured to help women gain independence and confidence, and help them reach everyday goals like picking up their children from day care or school. We can wait to get on the road with our clients soon!

11.01.2022 MYTH: Refugees limit the number of jobs available to citizens. Refugees actually create jobs! According to OECD research, refugees expand domestic markets and create a new job for every job they occupy.
11.01.2022 River is one of our Ignite clients, and has been busy creating and brewing organic, sugar-free (but still tasty!) iced-tea for the last 18 months. Check out how she started her business, Sustainabilitea, in the article below!

10.01.2022 IN THE NEWS: New research uncovers the extent of suffering temporary migrants have endured throughout COVID-19. Our parent organisation, Settlement Services International - SSI released their own data with startling statistics: more than 80% of those surveyed on temporary visas had lost their job or had their hours reduced. A troubling statistic given people seeking asylum in Australia who are on bridging or temporary visas have been omitted from the federal governments COVID-19 emergency stimulus payments for people who have lost their jobs. We stand with SSI and other organisations within the multicultural sector calling for newcomers, regardless of their visa status, to be treated fairly and receive at minimum, a package that enables them to access healthcare, feed their families and have a roof over their heads.
09.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day, and it also marks the start of Queensland Mental Health Week. 04.01.2022 Today is #WhiteRibbonDay and Access reaffirms its commitment to end violence against women. Unfortunately, with the world forced into lockdown due to COVID-19, domestic violence against women and children increased. (Read more about that here: https://ab.co/36IlVUV). No one ever deserves to live this way. This is something we are passionate about, which is why we established 99 Steps in 2017, our domestic and family violence program, which offers support specifically designed... for CALD communities. We all must play our part in eliminating violence against women.

03.01.2022 This week is Anti-Poverty Week. During these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever to support those in the Australian community who are struggling... the most. The health and economic impact of COVID-19 is hitting marginalised people and communities the hardest. The #COVID19 crisis means more than 2 million people now need to rely on Jobseeker and Jobkeeper payments to live. For asylum seekers and refugees on temporary or bridging visas, it means they don't receive this support entirely. Take action today and help us: #RaiseTheRateForGood: https://bit.ly/3lx5kcn and #PayItForward for the communities doing it tough: https://bit.ly/3fTUb2h #APW2020 #AntipovertyWeek2020

02.01.2022 Recently, our Community Education team organised a family photo day event at Logan Gardens as a part of the school holiday activities. New families in SETS program were invited to attend the event and take free family photos which CE team later printed, framed and delivered to the families as gifts! The families and children were excited to see the framed photos, and some shared that it's their first time taking family photos since arriving in Australia. It didn't take too ...long before the framed photos found their places in the living rooms. It was a rewarding day being able to create a memorable experience and capture the moment in photos for the families, and to be able to connect with our clients in a meaningful way again, despite the office closure.
02.01.2022 This #WomensHealthWeek we want to highlight a couple of programs we have for women in our Access community! First up - our Maternity Hub at the Gateway. Check out the program in an interview we did last year with ABC News.
