22.01.2022 OVER EATING & HEALTHY HABITS Following the effects of this global COVID-19 outbreak, there has been a dramatic change to life as we knew it. While we are busy self-isolating for our health and the health of those we love, we may find ourselves over eating and reaching for the wrong foods as a coping mechanism. Working from home, home schooling and anxiety over the threat/uncertainty of coronavirus can all add stress to our lives. This heightens the level of our cortisol... hormone in our bodys, which increases appetite and cravings for surgery, salty and fatty foods. While eating mindlessly may be the quick fix you think you need, it could have long term effect on your mental well-being and your overall physical health HEART HEALTH! So how do you make the right food choices? Start with a protein option. A diet rich in protein is important for a healthy heart. You can find sources of protein in meat, poultry, seafood and plant based diets. Include a fibre rich option and Load up on Vegetables. Plan your meals. We all know what its like when Thursday and Friday roll around, youve had a long week and cannot be bothered to think about a healthy option let along cook. If you plan your meals in advance and shop for your week, preparing healthy meals will become a habit and the temptation of fast food takeaway will be a thing of the past. Remember that everyone is in a similar situation and its natural to let bad habits get the better of us while we adapt to our new normal. We hope everyone is finding ways to move their body every day and keep positive. #hearthealthforlife See more

Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer. Volunteering helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. The social contact aspect of helping and working with others can have a profound effect on your overall psychological well-being. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person. Working with pets and other animals has also been shown to improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not. Older volunteers tend to walk more, find it easier to cope with everyday tasks, are less likely to develop high blood pressure, and have better thinking skills.
