06.01.2022 Six surgical teams have joined forces at Princess Alexandra Hospital in a mammoth surgery that has saved Queensland mother, Keri Frecklington from a life withou...t speech, eating and mobility after a successful 20-hour surgery involving Anaesthetics, Ear, Nose and Throat, Upper Gastrointestinal, Orthopaedic, Plastic, and Cardiac surgeons, to solve significant complications in her neck. When competitively training as a national triathlon representative in 2009, Keri was hit by a car while cycling resulting in significant spinal injuries that, while not affecting the use of her limbs, did require extensive orthopaedic surgery including metal work in her upper spine. Faced with the reality that Keri, a woman in her 40’s, may be tube fed for the foreseeable future, PAH surgeons teamed up to find a surgical solution using 3D-printing, innovation and collaboration to maintain the integrity of Keri’s throat function. You go to university for 10 years, then you train surgically for 10 years and all of it is for exactly this. It’s very rewarding, said PA Hospital Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon, Dr Adam Frankel. With the help of the Australian Centre for Complex Integrated Surgical Solutions, our team of specialist surgeons planned and completed a very complicated, very precise surgery while maintaining the integrity of Keri’s neck stability and throat function in a matter of weeks. It took close to 20hours for 17 surgeons representing six specialties to remove Keri’s infected metal work, repair the hole in her oesophagus, replace the metal work required and replace the infected skin tissue.
