01.01.2022 Rental bond data The ATO has given notice of its intention to collect real property rental bond data from state and territory rental bond authorities dating back to 20 September 1985 (the introduction of the CGT regime). The data will be collected to identify individuals who have income tax reporting obligations for income producing properties or have a CGT event arising from the sale of real property for the period from 20 September 1985 to the 2019-20 financial year.... The notice explains that the data will be electronically matched with certain sections of ATO data holdings to identify taxpayers that can be provided with tailored information to help them meet their tax obligations, or to ensure compliance with taxation law.

01.01.2022 Sharing economy accommodation (ie AirBNB etc) As part of its focus on the sharing economy, the ATO has also given notice of its intention to collect data to identify individuals who have or may be engaged in providing accommodation services through an online platform during the 2016-17 to 2019-20 financial years. The ATO will also collect details of all payments made by the platforms to accommodation providers including payments made by international entities for the 2016-17 ...to 2019-20 financial years. The data will allow the ATO to identify taxpayers with tax compliance issues. The ATO will match the data provided by the platforms against ATO records to identify individuals who rent property on a short term basis but may not be meeting their registration, reporting, lodgment and/or payment obligations.
