23.01.2022 It's critical that all children with disability are able to access services like the NDIS, regardless of their Indigenous background. The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows 14 per cent of Indigenous children aged 14-or-under had a disability in 2009, compared with 7 per cent of non-Indigenous children. This article from The Sydney Morning Herald describes some of the challenges experienced by Indigenous Australians with disability and their families ...when trying to access support. "Aboriginal people need to be involved in designing the system and institutions," she said. "We have to break the cycle of disability now." https://www.smh.com.au//indigenous-families-missing-out-on

14.01.2022 NDIS CHANGES: The NDIS has announced that as of Sunday 28th February you can no longer purchase Support Coordination from your Core Budget. UPDATE: This has now been extended to the 31st March 2021. What this means:... If you have Support Coordination in your child’s Plan: no change. If you have Support Coordination in your child’s Plan but you have been purchasing more using Core: you will only be able to get what is in the Plan. If you don’t have Support Coordination in your child’s Plan and you have been purchasing it through the Core budget: you won’t be able to do this from Sunday. If you are in this situation and you need Support Coordination you can request a Plan Review to have Support Coordination added to your child’s Plan. We know Support Coordination has been important for so many Victorian families who have had to rearrange NDIS supports during COVID-19 restrictions and learning from home. We will be speaking up and asking the NDIA to keep plans flexible so children and families can get the support they need.

12.01.2022 If your child is facing being suspended or expelled from school, it’s important to understand the process and your child’s rights. School is a big part of your child’s life. If things aren’t working well or issues become more serious, it can be a stressful and emotional time for everyone involved. Your child’s rights mean that:... Schools have a responsibility to support students to behave appropriately. This includes providing support for their emotional wellbeing and mental health. Schools must make reasonable adjustments to meet your child’s individual needs, including to support their behaviour. A suspension cannot last for more than five days. A student may not be suspended for more than 15 days in a school year. If your child is suspended you can request a Student Support Group meeting to discuss behaviour support strategies for a positive return to school or class and to prevent another suspension. Visit our website for all the information relating to suspensions and expulsions: https://www.acd.org.au/suspensions-and-expulsions/
