The looks on the faces of Mick’s daughter Lucy, 12, and their nine-month old kelpie ‘Rusty’ reflect exactly how Mick feels about that healthy oat crop they’re sitting in, with his first harvest on the horizon. We’ve had our property for around three and a half years now and this is the first crop we’ve been able to grow, Mick said. We were actually talking about packing up and moving in February this year because of the drought but all of a sudden, we received over 100mm of rain practically overnight. Almost immediately, the future started to look very different and we haven’t even mentioned the idea of moving again! Lucy is a keen animal lover as is Michael’s 13-year-old son Charlie, who saved up his pocket money and bought ‘Rusty’ as a gift for Dad. We’ve had all sorts of pets here over the years, Lucy’s a huge fan of dogs and horses especially, Mick says. I’ve got a lot of love for those two and they clearly have a lot of love for each other, too.
