23.01.2022 A down-right dangerous inspection today in Wollongong NSW, a burnt out house with upper level floors and roof falling in. Once the asbestos materials start to crack and disintegrate with the heat the whole area and every surface becomes contaminated by airborne asbestos fibres, much respect to the Fire Service as it's not just fire those guys are up against in their duties.

20.01.2022 A very pleasant morning working for one of my favorite clients, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, surveying heritage buildings and Eagle enclosures.Much respect to the Rangers for their excellent work with native species.

15.01.2022 Asbestos safety after bushfires Date Wednesday, 08 January 2020 ... Asbestos is a potential hazard when returning to bushfire affected properties. State and territories have issued advice and these links are provided below for your information. Asbestos is present in as many as 1 in 3 homes built prior to 1990, as well as many public buildings built in that time, and in natural disasters like fires formally bonded asbestos fibres can easily become loose and airborne. The most likely time that exposure to asbestos could occur is during the building clean-up or demolition phase, when debris and materials are moved extensively. However, exposure can also occur when walking around the site to assess damage. It is strongly recommended that personal protective equipment is worn. (see example of type of equipment here). There are precautionary measures that the public can take to protect themselves as much as possible, and authorities have advised on this. Advice common across all Commonwealth, state and territory responsible authorities includes: Take all advice from emergency and clean up personnel on the ground Do not enter your property until you are advised that it is safe Wear a P2 face mask and protective clothing (such as sturdy boots and gloves) whether you believe asbestos may be present or not. Advice from the Department of Health regarding P2 face masks An example of the type of protective clothing suggested can be found here, provided by Emergency NSW. Keep children (and animals) clear of the site Building rubble should not be buried as it may contain hazardous materials including asbestos Don't spread ash and debris around your property, or move it extensively, particularly if asbestos materials were used in your home or other structures Moisten the ash with water to minimise dust and keep damp but do not use high pressure water sprays

10.01.2022 With visions of mega-fires throughout Australia it is hard for some people to think ahead of the next few hours, let alone the aftermath clean up of these areas as these conditions are likely to remain for months to come. Prior to emergency services and all frontline heroes accessing these areas, as a duty of care the state and federal goverment should put in place a public warning regarding asbestos contamination throughout all of these fire ravaged properties.

09.01.2022 A website expert advised me that the best way to direct people to my Facebook page and business website is genuine integrity......and wildlife photos? Here are just some of the faces i've bumped into at work

06.01.2022 Recently, I carried out an inspection of a decommissioned water reservoir tower in a wee town in NSW, the bitumen coating on the interior had already been tested for asbestos by the Regional Council and Southern Cross University laboratories with results showing NegativeHowever during my inspection I noticed a powdery coating to some areas of the bitumen sealant (internal of reservoir) which I sampled for testing. My test result was positive for asbestos which caused a furo...re with council, instructing me to attend site again (9 hour round trip) for further testing as they were certain my method and result was suspect? Once again my results were positive for friable (powdery) asbestos contamination to the internal surfaces of the reservoir which had been decommissioned for 2 months. Had this not been correctly identified and documented, the tower would have been demolished (adjacent a school) potentially contaminating the area and exposing the contractors carrying out the work to airborne asbestos fibresSometimes experience and instinct is worth more than all the University degrees in the world. 05.01.2022 It seems that almost everyone i meet in Australia knows someone who has died or is currently suffering from an asbestos related disease......there is a surefire way to reduce the risk to you and your family. If you are buying, renting, renovating, working (or playing) in an older property (pre-1990's) ensure there is an asbestos report available for your perusal, this is your legal right to ensure you and your family live, learn, work and play in a safe environment. https://youtu.be/KIpxelbkI0I
