23.01.2022 The May Budget set out proposed changes to the Home Downsizer Contribution rules. Don't be deceived by the title, you don't necessarily have to be downsizing to take advantage. Tony Kaye from Vanguard sets out what you need to know in a recent piece. http://ow.ly/5CKR50EVnfb

18.01.2022 Vanguard have recently released their economic and market update. It provides a concise summary of how economies are placed in various areas of the world. Vanguard also provide an update to their forecasts for 10 year returns for a number of asset classes in Australian dollar terms. The key takeaways here are to expect lower returns for longer especially with bonds. This in turn suggests that we may need to dampen our expectations for future portfolio performance at least in the short to medium term. http://ow.ly/Arvs50BNW0V

17.01.2022 Is a financial advisor worth the cost? This is a crucial question to be asking before heading down the path of engaging with professional financial advice. There are a number of variables to identify before you can successfully answer this question with the two key ones being: - What value will an adviser bring me?... - What exactly is it going to cost to achieve that value? The latter is probably more easily definable. A recent report sets this at an average level of $3,558 per annum per client (http://ow.ly/Klsy50BRTbG) Some financial advice clients might be paying a lot less than this with others paying a lot more depending on the offering from the firm in question. Some firms, like ours, will scale fees depending on the level of service, complexity and affordability for each individual client. Whatever the amount, it is likely a significant cost for many so what is the exact value that you should expect to get back? Russell Investments have put some thought and resources into defining the value that a client can expect to receive. In the following article they provide some initial points for clients to consider along with a simple case study around financial advisors providing protection against making behavioural mistakes like selling out at the depths of market falls or falling the herd to buy in when assets are potentially over valued. Well worth a read. If you would like to know more request their 2020 Value of an Adviser Report or get in contact with us to get a copy. http://ow.ly/yv4B50BRTbx

11.01.2022 I am often having discussions with my wife about putting a value on the time that we spend especially if that time is being used to eke out a small saving. This can be a particularly hard fought debate when it relates to our down time on weekends. It’s often said that time and convenience become more valuable as we age and as our responsibilities expand. So it makes sense to think about our limited time as an asset that we should manage just as we exercise care in managing money. Blogger Ben Carlson offers some valuable insights on the subject here. http://ow.ly/k9TV50ECZ4z

10.01.2022 What a timely week to have Financial Planing week for 2020 in conjunction with the announcement of the Federal Government budget later this evening. The Budget may deliver a specific reason to get in touch with a financial planner or it might just be another spark to take action about your future plans. We at A Clear Direction encourage you to reach out to a financial planner to sit down with them to have a discussion about how they might be able to assist you in achieving those fife goals that require financial support.

03.01.2022 When talking retirement planning we can easily fall into the trap of thinking that everything needs to be invested through a tax exempt superannuation pension account to ensure that you do not lose retirement income to the tax man. However, thanks to a seldom referred to tax offset a retiree can afford to hold a significant amount of investments, particularly income producing low capital gain assets, without risking paying tax. This article published by National Seniors ex...plains how the Seniors and Pensioners Tax Offset (SAPTO) works. http://ow.ly/7NlE50EzhLt

03.01.2022 A conversation I am having with a number of clients whom are already in their full retirement years and accessing part or full Age Pension payments is whether accessing capital out of the value of the family home is worth considering. In this article published by Firstlinks, Dr Deborah Ralston from the Monash University clearly sets out the available options. Well worth a read. http://ow.ly/2vIv50Eg3Lj
