23.01.2022 ACMA NSW is very proud of our close-knit team. This was actually a very serious 5.5 hour meeting regarding the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak that is the focus of the world right now. Seemingly casual, our presidential committee team A/Prof Seng Chai Chua, Professor Danforn Lim and Dr Tao Geng have been working tirelessly to discuss recommendations for updates to the NSW Health guidelines regarding risk stratification, specific triage guidelines and workplace precautio...ns as well as establishing direct contact between ACMA and the NSW Department of Health to minimise transmission risk in the community. We have taken into account the concerns of our doctors when drafting our recommendations. We are very aware that while Australia is at lower risk for now we need to be vigilant due to global travel especially during the Chinese New Year holiday period. Our doctors are likely to be in contact with Chinese patients, and primary care providers also see many vulnerable patients for example children and the elderly. It is extremely important to recognise that things can change very quickly, so we need to be proactive. There is no need to panic, but everyone has a part to play in this global health crisis. Together we are strong. #acma #acma_nsw #publichealth #crisis
23.01.2022 Making news for a good cause. Our media release recommending a joint effort between ACMA NSW and NSW Department of Health in fighting the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak was published in Sing Tao News (Australia) today for the weekend edition of 1-2 February 2020. At this current time, the NSW Department of Health has taken up 4 of the 7 recommendations put forward by our doctors, with further updates to come as we are strategising pre-emptively to prevent community spre...ad of the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus. ACMA NSW has also established official communications with the NSW Department of Health, with confirmation that the NSW Ministry of Health will distribute all updated briefings and health guidelines/directives to ACMA NSW daily via our Co-Chair of Community Health & Research and Honorary President Dr Stephen Li. Dr Li is the Director of Core Pathology and Clinical Chemistry Services of NSW Health Pathology Western Sector, and is based at Westmead Hospital, currently the frontline of the battle against the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus in NSW. We are continuing to raise funds for medical supplies on behalf of the ACMA Charitable Trust for frontline Chinese hospitals. 23.01.2022 ACMA NSW held our Lunar New Year Celebration Dinner for the Year of the Rat at Sky Phoenix Restaurant on 1st February 2020. Fully subscribed as usual, our guests and members were excited to start the new year. Honouring our W2IRED-Way In Network WHO Internship Project Scholars, forming an unprecedented partnership with MIGA enabling great discounts on medical indemnity premiums for members and hosting the next ACCMA Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) in September 2020, there was... much cause for celebration. Updates on the 2019-nCoV outbreak did not dampen anyones spirits, indeed it showed the strength and solidarity of the ACMA NSW team responding quickly and decisively to support our overseas colleagues, proactively establish communication with the Department of Health and develop actionable strategies to keep our doctors and the community safe. The food and entertainment were stellar, not to mention the final dance program that had everyone reluctant to leave till last call. Till next year! #acma #acma_nsw #publichealth #guidelines #coronavirus #virology #chinesenewyear #celebrations

22.01.2022 Highly anticipated was the final social and networking event of 2019, our Christmas High Tea held at Doltone House Hyde Park last Saturday. This event was of special significance as we welcomed a bumper crop of new members who joined this year, attesting to the strength of our organisation, and the value it adds to our members professional and personal lives. Sponsored by our long term corporate partner Douglass Hanly Moir, we knew the event would come jam-packed with inter...esting insights. Special guest speaker A/Professor Fiona Maclean highlighted the importance of communication between all medical stakeholders, drawing parallels from international bestselling title Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. Whod have thought the differences between clinicians and pathologists occurred on a planetary scale? Patient outcomes can indeed vary greatly between a missing piece of clinical information or omitting lab tests if either party were unaware. Special thanks once again to DHM for their ongoing support. On behalf of ACMA NSW, Vice President Dr Vivian Liu warmly welcomed all new members - to a bigger and better year! Looking forward to our 30th anniversary and WACD Conference in 2020. Happy Holidays!!! #acma #acma_nsw #christmas #hightea #networking

21.01.2022 ACMA NSW joint event with MIGA and Sanofi was a resounding success, with such a high turnout an alternate venue had to be sourced at extremely short notice to accomodate all our doctors on the waiting list! We strive to fulfil the education and networking needs of all our members with high quality, evidenced based presentations aimed at raising clinical standards. This is reflected in the event uptake each and every educational evening. MIGA highlighted pitfalls/issues in ris...k management, how to make sure your practice is compliant with Medicare regulations, and tips to handle audits professionally. Did you also know that familial hyperlipidemia is currently under diagnosed and could have long term morbidities for our patients? Our resident expert lipidologist Dr Stephen Li unraveled the story behind this global epidemic, elucidating new guidelines on managing dyslipidaemia with the latest class of medication that can significantly improve cardiac outcomes. Many thanks to our presenters and sponsors from MIGA and Sanofi once again, and kudos to our secretarial team for running it like a well oiled machine. #acma #acma_nsw #riskmanagement #dyslipidaemia #guidelines #evidencebased #global #epidemic #cardiovascularhealth
20.01.2022 ACMA NSW COVID-19 Taskforce was invited to attend an international livestream with Shanghai Infectious Disease Experts and medical and community leaders of Chinese background from Australia, Malaysia, France, Italy and the United Emirates. Shanghai has a population of roughly 25 million people, and have successfully contained COVID-19 by identifying the source of infection, breaking the transmission chain effectively through public health education campaigns advocating wides...pread use of protective masks in public (acknowledging this is not socially accepted in Western nations as a cultural norm), handwashing, social distancing and supporting quarantined individuals so they may be isolated successfully from other family members/close contacts to completion of the quarantine period. This takes planning, empathy and consideration of fellow humanity. Vice President Dr Tao Geng and Subcommittee Chair of ACMA Social Media Dr Danae Lim and ACMA member Dr Qing Shen attended, with the opportunity to ask the experts directly. What a great learning experience. We also had a chat with our community Chinese leaders on the correct usage of face masks, effective hand washing and why there was no need to panic buy. #acma #acmansw #livestream #expertmeeting #infectiousdisease #publichealth #internationalexpert #covid19
20.01.2022 ACMA NSW continues our donation appeal in order to fund scholarships for virology study exchange between Australia and China on behalf of ACMA Charitable Trust. All donations are tax-deductible. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially designated the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus the COVID-19 disease, avoiding nomenclature that refers to any geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people to prevent inaccuracy or stigmatisation. This also provides a... standard format for naming any future coronavirus outbreak. Leading health experts have been meeting at WHO headquarters in Geneva to prioritise research required to stop this outbreak and prevent future pandemics. All measures taken by the WHO and the Australian Department of Health (DOH) are proactive, precautionary and preventive. There is a wealth of misinformation circulating online and through social media platforms. Encouraging patients to fact check with their doctors and through DOH and WHO websites for the latest update will greatly aid in reducing community panic. 18.01.2022 ACMA NSW is highly aware of the risks the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus poses to the Australian community at large. Over the weekend, our presidential committee team conferred with doctors from different specialties, a high proportion of whom were involved in establishing quarantine and treatment protocols for the SARS coronavirus pandemic in 2003. We also took into consideration that the WHO organisation has top infectious disease experts managing both the known and unknown as...pects of the outbreak including elucidating (person-to-person) transmission mechanisms, viral shed and unpredictable disease behaviour in different at risk populations. With caution we have made recommendations that complement the current NSW Health Guidelines for the treatment of this viral disease, including further risk stratification and encouraging self quarantine accordingly, as well as streamlining and limiting the points of at risk population exposure during the presentation process. ACMA Trust is raising funds to provide medical supplies to the major transport hub of Guangzhou preemptively. 17.01.2022 DOCTOR WHOO? Dr Reg Leong, GP in Fairfield. I have been in solo practice for the past 44 yrs. ACMA? I am Chair for ACMA Education and Networking subcommittee. I have always been interested in continuing education. There is so much to learn and it is always so much fun to learn amongst fellow peers in a relaxed atmosphere. I have been involved with ACMA since its inception in 1990. I have been in the Management committee during the so called good old days and I am now g...lad to be back! I’m so glad to see that ACMA is in good, capable hands during this difficult pandemic year. With the coming New Year, we hope to resume our activities once again (safely of course). I can’t wait to restart the face to face meetings as I really miss the interpersonal relationships and networking. I welcome ideas from members on ways to improve our education. May I suggest that interested members join the Education subcommittee? That way we can have representation from various parts of Sydney. ACMA is special to me as there is a bond, friendship and common trust amongst its members, which makes learning so much more fun and relaxed. I look forward to meeting you all next year at our functions. FUN FACT? I love the outdoors. So walking, golf, tennis and all matter of ball sports are passions of mine. I have slowed down in my latter years, but still love my walking and occasional bike riding. Unfortunately, loving all the above sports did not guarantee me being good at them! But it was fun playing them. My passions now are my grandkids, and like all doting grandparents, we just love them to the max. 16.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: Health Minister The Hon. Brad Hazzard announced that elite researchers from the NSW Health Pathology biosecurity P4 laboratory have successfully cultivated live 2019-nCOV coronavirus from NSW patients. This will aid in accurately understanding how the disease behaves and replicates, greatly expediting the development of reliable diagnostic testing, treatment and vaccines worldwide. ... Professor Dominic Dwyer, Director of Public Health Pathology commented: Synthetic virus tools don't offer the same high degree of diagnostic accuracy needed to help us develop effective antiviral drugs that can be used to treat infected patients." This discovery will be shared with the World Health Organization, international researchers and clinicians to save lives. ACMA NSW is greatly honoured to have Professor Dwyer speak at 2019-nCoV seminar held on 7 February 2020, alluding to this ground-breaking development during his presentation. TRUST OUR EXPERTS. 16.01.2022 ACMA NSW is finishing off the year strong with our final educational event - a highly practical seminar combining risk management for practices as well as cardiovascular health, essential to any GP surgery. 16.01.2022 ACMA NSW supports gender equality and does not condone gender violence in any and all workplaces, especially in health care. Our history spans a full 29 years, and we are extremely proud that we have progressed to almost an equal number of female ACMA members, with equal representation in our management committee in 2019. We firmly believe that each and every individual brings unique qualities to the table. If there are equal numbers of male and female counterparts in genera...l society, and in medicine, so should the voices that are heard. There is no place for personal prejudice, nor should an individual in a position of power be allowed to misrepresent the views of society at large. Medicine adapts to the ever changing needs of society, and we need to be considerate of not just women, but everyone. A better reflection of fairness is to afford fathers the same right to paternity leave and privileges of being primary carers like in Scandinavian countries. To lead by example. To a progressive, inclusive and considerate network, created by doctors to serve doctors and the community. 14.01.2022 ACMA NSW is acutely aware of the public fear that the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak may become uncontainable. Current status of the outbreak in Australia: CONTAINED FACT: There is an extremely small number of cases in Australia, with precautionary measures taken by the Department of Health (DOH) to intercept transmission. ... Conspiracy theories online are rife, with media fanning the undercurrent of racism against ethnic Chinese in Australia. Misinformation about the usage of protective face masks, circulation of half truths and paranoia spread even more rapidly than the actual outbreak. In an interview with ABC, ACMA NSW Senior Vice President Professor Danforn Lim stated that the public may share rumours or unverified information without understanding the consequences. He also corrected the fallacy that respiratory face masks could be reused after being steamed or microwaved. When in doubt, fact check with your GP and verify it with the government (DOH) website or university sources. Bottomline is, practising good hand hygiene and avoiding crowded places as with any viral illness including influenza or the common cold goes a long way in preventing transmission. There is simply no need to panic. Link in comments. #acma #acma_nsw #publichealth #factcheck

11.01.2022 On behalf of the Management Committee, I wish you and your family a Happy New Year. Although life is very unpredictable and as much as we don’t like it, to a large extent we don’t control our fate. Nevertheless, 2021 does look promising. The vaccine is coming. We will be able to eat out again. We will be able to travel again. The Management Committee has had its work cut out - trying to arrange a program for 2021, whilst juggling a very tight budget and Covid precautions,. I...n particular, we want to provide activities that will appeal to young doctors, whilst also offer things for our established members to enjoy. Due to reduced activities in 2020, no annual fee will be levied on members in 2021. Be assured that the Management Committee is working hard to keep ACMA relevant and valuable to all members. See the draft program in the attached flyer. Best Wishes, Dr Stephen Hing, President. #acmansw #medical #medicalassociation #managementcommittee #youngdoctors #HappyNewYear2021 #HappyNewYear
11.01.2022 ACMA NSW jointly presents the Latest Update on 2019-nCoV Infection for Medical and Healthcare Practitioners with the Chinese Medicine Council of NSW. We are honoured to have NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant and virology/infectious disease experts Professor Dominic Dwyer and Professor Lyn Gilbert. A scientific approach analysing the disease spectrum, proactively intercepting community transmission by limiting the inflow of travellers from endemic regions and requestin...g self quarantine for those returning from those areas is aimed at containment. By identifying the maximum number of cases in the community, contact tracing and isolation, this effectively curtails the transmission chain before widespread contagion. The Department of Health has always maintained that all patients should call ahead be it to the emergency department or general practitioner clinics, stressing that essential care will be accessible for all acute cases. A question and answer session effectively addressed the practical difficulties practitioners faced with regards to lack of personal protective equipment, further refining risk stratification for referral of patients at risk. A summary will be available soon. Livestream video now available on our Facebook feed. #acma #acma_nsw #doh #publichealth #coronavirus

07.01.2022 ACMA NSW has been raising funds on behalf of the ACMA Charitable Trust to purchase and send essential medical supplies to frontline Chinese hospitals fighting the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak, with a minimum commitment of $25,000. Since Wuhan was locked down on 23 January 2020, our presidential committee team has had multiple meetings with various Chinese hospitals, the ACMA Charitable Trust and specialist doctors to ascertain the risk of transmission in Australia. O...ur management committee also called urgent meetings to discuss the best strategies to assist the frontline in the shortest time possible. Our donation drive commenced Monday 27 January 2020 and raised over $13,000 in less than two days. To avoid unnecessary delay ACMA NSW matched this amount directly and was able to purchase 400 cartons of personal protective equipment. The first batch of medical supplies was earnarked for Sun Yat Sen University affiliated hospitals in Guangzhou, where supplies were diverted to Wuhan and critically low. As of 1 February 2020, the supplies have cleared Chinese customs on the ground in Guangzhou and are being transported to or have arrived at the hospitals. The battle continues. 03.01.2022 ACMA NSW recognises that the global fight against the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak is a long term battle. We are continuing to raise funds to support ongoing research and humanitarian aid to the affected regions. 03.01.2022 ACMA NSW Senior Vice President Professor Danforn Lims live interview with SBS Mandarin on the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus aired 3 February 2020. Professor Lim examined the myths and facts surrounding this disease, emphasising that the current outbreak was geographical, not genetically selective for Asians. He also pointed out why self quarantine for all travellers returning from mainland China was necessary, simple guidelines to follow while under self quarantine including ...wearing surgical masks, good hand hygiene and the use of separate cutlery to protect family/close contacts from infection. Last but not least, Professor Lim elucidated the correct use of surgical masks; the N95 respirator mask is not recommended for prolonged use by the public. ACMA NSW represents doctors of all Chinese backgrounds and the majority of our members speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. This is very well represented by our management committee. We collaborate with many major doctor groups, reaching out to the largest community of Chinese doctors in NSW across different platforms, without discrimination by language. 01.01.2022 ACMA NSW senior management committee members had a great night catching up with Steven Macarounas, Head of Education and Managing Editor of The Private Practice. In the age of digital media, networking is more important than ever. The Private Practice is a professional team educating doctors on financial strategy, connecting health professionals to industry experts with the right skill set to achieve practice and career goals through actionable plans. The Private Practice ha...s been a staunch supporter of ACMA NSW for more than seven years, dedicating their professional services to help our doctors raise their practice standards to the next level, taking the worry out of business management so doctors can concentrate on what they do best - being doctors and caring for patients. President A/Prof Seng Chai Chua, senior vice president Professor Danforn Lim and vice president Dr Vivian Liu had a lively discussion with Steven regarding the changing financial landscape in light of global economy, anticipating issues that may be faced by doctors in the next few years and providing management solutions. Looking forward to what the future may bring. #acma #acma_nsw #theprivatepractice #businessmanagement #financialstrategy #education #collaboration #futureproofing
01.01.2022 ACMA NSW press releases regarding our recommendations for a joint effort with the NSW Department of Health (DOH) in fighting the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak have now been published in the three major Chinese newspapers circulating in the Sydney metropolitan region: Australian Chinese Daily, Sing Tao News and Daily Chinese Herald. In addition to our online, on air and social media presence, ACMA NSW is able to maximise our reach to medical practitioners and healthca...re providers (HCPs) including but not limited to GPs and Chinese medicine practitioners, community HCPs most likely to see at-risk patients. ACMA NSW first reached out to DOH on 28 January 2020, after our management committee held multiple meetings over the Chinese New Year weekend, developing recommendations which were promptly taken up by DOH. A follow up letter on 31 January 2020 initiated official communications between ACMA NSW and DOH: updated guidelines will be disseminated through ACMA NSW to community based HCPs and regular feedback is provided to DOH to address any obstacles to providing quality healthcare safely for both practitioner and patient. Last nights meeting was a testament to the success of this collaborative approach. #acma #acma_nsw #publichealth #coronavirus #guidelines
