25.01.2022 .ENTHUSIASM IN VOTING Commenting on enthusiasm in the American presidential election, Professor David Flint writes in Spectator 5.ix.2020 that if neither side has it, as was obvious in the Australian Morrison-Shorten election, it doesn’t matter. But if only one side has this, they have a signal advantage. ''I realised this in the 1999 No Republic campaign,'' he says ' ''where we had neither money, nor politicians, nor media. But we had supporters with that ingredient,... enthusiasm . And they had it in abundance. When Bob Carr seized Sydney’s Government House, ACM filled Macquarie Street with 20,000 very peaceful protesters. But when the republicans called, with daily media support , a mass demonstration just before the vote, nobody came. Why? Nobody was interested. And just as ACM had over 55,000 enthusiastic foot soldiers, the ARM had to rely on unenthused union/ALP conscripts. ''

22.01.2022 ON THIS DAY, 1 OCTOBER Sir Harry Chauvel leads the Australian Light Horse into Damascus on 1 October, 1918. British General Allenby asked the Australians to allow the Arab Legion under Prince Feisal, who became King of Syria (until the French took over) and Lawrence of Arabia the honour of entering the ancient city first. ... As they have so often, Australians fought to free a people for no territorial or financial advantage for their country.

20.01.2022 The Victorian governor, as ultimate constitutional guardian, has, among the Crown's reserve powers, the powers to refuse assent or to propose the amendment of bills presented to for Royal Assent, Professor David Flint told Alan Jones on Sky News last night. Exercising her traditional rights, it would be appropriate to recall these powers when she receives the Premier. The Victorian government's COVID-19 Omnibus Emergency Measures and Other Acts Amendment Bill was rush...ed through the state's legislative assembly, and is set to be voted on in the upper house. It would remove the ancient right to habeas corpus, the right for any person detained to have the legality of that detention tested in court. The bill which will last until April 2021 gives officers the power to detain people whom they perceive to be a high-risk person (either with COVID-19 or a close contact) and who refuses to comply with health directives. High profile legal figures want the bill defeated in parliament and key cross benchers have signalled they will oppose the bill.

20.01.2022 FOUNDING ACM RECALLED AT 20th NATIONAL CONFERENCE If LLoyd Waddy QC is the father of ACM, David Flint says senior barrister Peter King must be its grandfather, Flint recalls phoning Peter King who was then President of the NSW Liberal Party in 1991 concerning the formation of the Australian Republican Moment. He had decided there was no point phoning the Labor Party as they were committed to a republic.... They agreed on the need for a body to defend the role of the Australian Crown in our Constitution. Peter King acted on that, inviting some leading citizens to join a committee which was to become an organisation Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, bringing together people a cross the political spectrum. ACM was to lead the Vote No group at the Convention and in the referendum .

19.01.2022 WARNING : REPUBLICANS UNITED? At the 21st National Conference of ACM, Professor David Flint warned that the two republican factions, the ARM and the Real Republicans, with the support of the ALP leadership, are working on a compromise republican model and a new strategy. This follows from the preference agreement related to the programme of plebiscites Bill Shorten would have instituted had Labor won the 2019 election. ... This was based on this principle imported from the EU: THE PEOPLE MUST KEEP ON VOTING UNTIL THEY GET IT RIGHT "The principle obstacle is that to agree on the model the ARM plans, the Real Republicans will have to betray the principles dear to the deceased and most respected founders of the movement, Ted Mack and Clem Jones. " Professor Flint warned.

16.01.2022 DISMISSAL BY AMBUSH? HARDLY By saying Gough Whitlam was dismissed by ambush (The Dismissal and me: a political obsession, The Australian, 10/11/20) Troy Bramston suggests Whitlam, a QC, had no idea of the constitutional consequences of supply being withheld. But in opposition, Whitlam had spelled these out when supporting Labor’s attempt to withhold supply to force an election.... Indeed, he instructed his shadow attorney Lionel Murphy to table a list of 179 other occasions when Labor had attempted to obtain this very result. If he were ambushed, it was only by his only mistaken belief that John Kerr was a weak man and lacked courage and strength. David Flint in The Australian

14.01.2022 The ARM is secretly planning to strip the head of state of any role as as a check and balance. 08.01.2022 The State Funeral of the Hon John Fahey AC, Premier of New South Wales from 1992 to 1995 and as the federal Minister for Finance from 1996 to 2001, was held at St Mary's Cathedral today. Mr Fahey is noted for having thwarted an assassination attempt on Charles, Prince of Wales. On Australia Day 1994, Prince Charles was about to commence handing out awards at a ceremony in Sydney's Darling Harbour when a former anthropology student, David Kang, lunged onto the stage towards t...he prince, simultaneously firing two shots from a starter's pistol. Fahey, sitting next to the prince, subsequently assisted by the then Australian of the Year, Ian Kiernan, tackled Kang and wrestled him to the ground, after which Kang was subdued and arrested. Although the attack proved less dangerous than it was first thought to be, Fahey was nonetheless widely praised for his unthinking bravery.[8][3] Mr. Fahey played a key role in the bidding process for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and is also noted for his reaction when Sydney won, jumping up and down enthusiastically. https://www.msn.com//prince-charles-attacked-/vi-BB18X0tm

07.01.2022 CONSTITUTIONAL GUARDIAN Leading lawyers are warning that draft Victorian legislation, the Covid-19 Omnibus (Emergency Measures) Amendment Bill, will remove the ancient right of habeas corpus. This has long allowed a person affected to have the legality of indefinite detention by 'authorized officers' tested before a court.... Exercising the role of the Crown as the guardian of the constitution, is it time for Her Excellency the Governor of Victoria, the Hon Linda Dessau AC, to counsel the Premier, gently recalling her reserve powers ?

07.01.2022 QUEEN TO RETURN TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE "The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will depart Balmoral Castle during the week commencing September 14 to spend time privately on the Sandringham Estate,'' according to a Royal Spokesman. There had been speculation in the media earlier this year that the Queen would never return to London. "Subject to the finalisation of the autumn programme, Her Majesty's intention is to return to Windsor Castle in October and to resume the use of Buc...kingham Palace for selected audiences and engagements. "These plans will be kept under review and will of course be subject to all relevant guidance and advice."

07.01.2022 LABOR'S SPLIT ON QUEEN While ALP Shadow Attorney General Mark Dreyfus Queen's Counsel and Shadow Assistant Minister for the Republic Hon Matt Thistlethwaite MP implicate the Queen in the dismissal contrary to all the evidence, Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek warns any attempts to trash the Queen will destroy the campaign for an Australian republic. Incidentally how can you have a shadow minister for the republic when there is no minister for the republic? Just wonderin...g. Ms. Plibersek rejects any theories that Buckingham Palace played any role in the dismissal of former prime minister Gough Whitlam. Launching Paul Kelly's and Troy Bramston's book on the Palace Letters, she said the next campaign for a republic must be a positive one embracing the fight for an Aboriginal Voice to parliament and Australia’s future in the world, and must not make the Queen a bogey-woman. Next campaign? Will there be one? Just wondering.

06.01.2022 BBC TRICKED DIANA INTO THAT INTERVIEW It is now clear that the BBC employed a graphic designer who forged bank statements which claimed untruthfully that the Princess of Wales security staff were being bribed by a Murdoch newspaper. This was then used to trick Diana into giving that bombshell interview with Martin Bashir. ... The graphic designer now claims the BBC never even took his statement over what is emerging as a major scandal.

05.01.2022 After Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1994 , Antigua and Barbuda's Prime Minister Lester Bird told Fidel Castro he intended to make his country a republic. When Castro asked whether the Queen interfered, Bird explained the situation in this realm. In which case, Fidel responded, you might consider remaining as you are. The Queen doesn't interfere with your Government and she provides to foreign investors and others a level of confidence in the constitutional arrangements of your State..

05.01.2022 QUEEN ALWAYS SCRUPULOUS When ACM was being formed, one of of the names considered for the movement was Leadership Beyond Politics. And what better example is there of this than our beloved Queen Elizabeth? Even in the referendum, despite the provocations of some republicans and, according to the High Commissioner the attempts by others to involve her in the campaign, she behaved as the perfect constitutional monarch. As she did at the time of the dismissal. The ARM is being ...foolish to argue otherwise. While it helps us that they do, we have to protest about the appalling way they are treating The Queen, a very fine lady. Incidentally during the referendum, the ARM attacked ACM. ''There not mentioning the Queen''. ACM which ran the No case argued from constitutional principle as we did in drafting the referendum booklet which went to every voter. Philip Flood, our High commissioner at the time of the referendum has confirmed this in a letter to The Australian on 12 November 2020. He writes: Paul Kelly (Palace letters settle this debate Kerr acted alone, 11/11) is correct in his incisive analysis of the recently released letters exchanged between Sir John Kerr and the Queen’s private secretary, Sir Martin Charteris. The letters offer no evidence that the Queen authorised or encouraged in any way, directly or indirectly, the dismissal of the Whitlam government. The dismissal was orchestrated by Kerr. Malcolm Turnbull displays poor judgment and poor understanding of the Queen in his suggestion that the private secretary’s letters on her behalf can be read as encouraging Whitlam’ s dismissal. Turnbull would also know that the Queen was scrupulous to take no part whatsoever in the republic referendum in 1999. As high commissioner in London at the time I had occasion to witness her refusal to give support to any protagonists. This is reflected in the statement she issued at Windsor Castle on November 6, 1999. In it she said, The future of the monarchy in Australia is an issue for the Australian people and them alone to decide, by democratic and constitutional means. She also said, My family and I would, of course, have retained our deep affection for Australia and Australians everywhere, whatever the outcome.

05.01.2022 NEW REPUBLICAN STRATEGY In a webinar on the PALACE LETTERS: THE SEARCH FOR THE SILVER BULLET, delivered to Australia's federalists in the Samuel Griffith Society, Professor David Flint explains how the republican movement has abandoned its failed 20 year strategy and relying on the Palace Letters is trying to develop a republican model acceptable to both wings of the movement. The Palace Letters are being used as a second silver bullet to try to discredit the Crown's reser...ve powers with the republican movement working with politicians to achieve this. Professor Flint's presentation to the webinar can be seen through the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTx-q6ni0Iw

02.01.2022 ON THIS DAY 30 NOVEMBER 1878: ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR FIRST PLAYED "Advance Australia Fair", published in early December 1878 by Peter Dodds McCormick under the pen-name "Amicus" ( "friend" in Latin) was first sung by Andrew Fairfax, accompanied by a concert band conducted by McCormick, at a function of the Highland Society of New South Wales in Sydney on 30 November 1878. In a Fraser Coalition government 1977 plebiscite to select a National Song and not National Anthem, "Adv...ance Australia Fair" received 43.29% of the vote, ahead of "Waltzing Matilda" (28.28%), "The Song of Australia" (9.65%) and the then restored National Anthem, "God Save the Queen" (18.78%). "Advance Australia Fair" was declared the National Anthem by the Hawke Laborgovernment in 1984, with "God Save the Queen" the Royal Anthem. On the Governor-General's initiative, the text of the proclamation was changed by the Minister at the Executive Council to remove a suggestion that "God Save the Queen" could only be played in the presence of the Queen or a member of the Royal Family. But because the original erroneous draft had been released to the press a widespread belief arose , despite ACM's attempts to correct this, that "God Save the Queen" can only be played in the presence of the Queen or a member of the Royal Family. This is not so. If you hear the erroneous rule cited , do correct it.

01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY On 25 September 1918 British Imperial forces, including the ANZAC Mounted Division, occupied the city of Amman in what would become the Kingdom of Jordan . After the breakthrough of the British Imperial forces along the coastal plain in the battle of Megiddo, the Turkish forces to the east of the Jordan River had continued to defend their positions. By 22 September, however, elements had begun to withdraw to Amman, with the intention of retreating north to Damas...cus. The ANZAC Mounted Division chased them east, but a Turkish rearguard managed to hold back the Division long enough for the main body of Turks to get away, leaving only 2,360 Turks to become prisoners.
