22.01.2022 "This is not what you had planned. This is not what you’d envisioned. There are no visits from friends, no loving doula bringing you soup, no mommy and me yog...a classes, no coffee dates, no stroller walks through the park. There is empty space where you had planned comfort and company. There are long days with no one but your little one to talk to and this big transition to navigate all alone. I know it’s lonely, mama. I know the walls of your house feel tight and the days feel so long, and you crave a warm hand on your knee and the soft embrace of a friend. You wish for someone by your side to marvel at this beautiful baby of yours and to wrap an arm around you when the feelings get too big and scary. We were never meant to do this alone. Motherhood has never been a solitary sport. And yet here we are, in this odd chapter of isolation and distance, with no choice but to do it by ourselves. But mama, know this- We are alone. Together. You are surrounded all the other mothers who are navigating this tender time in isolation. You are held by all of us who have walked the path before you and who know how much you must be hurting. You are wrapped in the warm embrace of mama earth, as she too settles into this time of slowness and healing. This too shall pass. And when it does, hugs and coffee dates and visits from friends will taste so much sweeter. Soft kisses on your cheek and arms around your waist and gentle laughter in your ear will be the joyful medicine after this trying time. Until then, hunker down mama. Find the coziest, warmest spot on your couch, sink into the pile of unfolded laundry, and sleep the Spring away, with that sweet babe warm on your chest." You are not alone mama. 17.01.2022 Meet Aleta Kennedy the Midwife Management Coordinator at the Alice Springs Hospital. We asked Aleta about her career and why she loves to work in midwifery in t...he Territory. My journey into the caring profession began as a middle child of a large family who adored looking after babies and following mum (a breastfeeding counsellor) around as she supported women with breastfeeding challenges. In 1998 I finished my nursing training before heading overseas to work and travel. On return to Australia I finished my midwifery training and was lucky to gain the opportunity to work in maternity at the Alice Springs Hospital. Ten years on and I am still working in, and loving midwifery in Alice Springs. At present I have taken on the exciting challenge of managing the Midwifery Group Practice, and yes I still get to experience the wonder of birth now and then. The best part about working in the NT is the community and the unique opportunity to learn from and offer midwifery support to women from the oldest known living culture in the world. The Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards are a chance to show the gratitude that is felt everyday by so many women and families towards the tireless efforts of the hard working midwives of the NT. 24hrs a day midwives are caring and supporting women and their babies, the opportunity to nominate and get involved comes once a year Do it! Nominations are still open for the Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards, visit https://nmea.nt.gov.au/

02.01.2022 Today is World Health Day. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is honouring the amazing contribution that nurses and midwives make to our communities.... In the Northern Territory, our nurses and midwives work in some of the most remote parts of the country providing care, support, friendship and education to keep Territorians healthy. Right now, nurses and other healthcare workers are on the frontline in hospitals and clinics around the world in response to the COVID-19 crisis. They are not only providing critical care and support to the sick but are also providing comfort and reassurance to their own families, friends and the broader community in a time of fear and uncertainty. Thank you, to nurses, midwives and all healthcare workers for the invaluable work you do.
