23.01.2022 We have a new entry in the ACNP COVID-19 Experience Journal from Lynley, Nurse Practitioner/Owner Mobile Aged Care Specialist. Thank you for sharing such an honest and real account of your COVID-19 experience. The ACNP would like to thank and offer our support to Lynley and all the staff in Aged Care for their hard work, dedication and care throughout this extremely tough time. In Lynleys words:... I think at the start I had a feeling of anxiety around the news. Working across several Aged Care Homes there was potential for loss of work from isolation, or becoming infected myself. Information available was conflicting. Every provider interpreted the daily changes their own way and still do. I also have a daughter still living at home working in the sector, making things even more complicated. Trying to obtain PPE was a non-starter. Masks usually provided by RACF when attending a respiratory resident were suddenly few and far between. The local PHN was unable to help as NPs were originally excluded from their support directive. Luckily a local dental supplier came through. What initially proved to be less work with one site doing telehealth only, my workload increased where others requested more help. My anxiety around healthcare provision and supporting nurses in their distress was ongoing. Many residents brought into the conspiracy theory and refused to stay away from others. Of course dementia residents have no chance of maintaining distance. News items targeting carers for neglect when they were doing the best they could do in the circumstances were demoralizing. I dont think I have ever been so upset at the biased and headline seeking news items, and it still goes on. I choose to only catch the news by radio now mostly. 16.01.2022 The Nurse Break interviewed Melanie Rose, NP about her role at Phillip Island. An honest and practical interview, and we are looking forward to listening to Melanie present at the ACNP National Conference in March, on the Gold Coast. "My partner in Phillip Island Health is Dr Carol Head. We both work as independent sole practitioners but we share the clinic room and our equipment. It is an interesting setup and it really works well for us. We were friends before we set up ...Phillip Island Health so we wanted to make sure that going into business together didn’t impact on that friendship. The easiest way to do that was to basically each set up as sole traders and just work together." 14.01.2022 The ACNP extends its support to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and we would like to voice our discontentment and disappointment in the American Medical Association’s recent media criticism and professional assassination of the American Nurse Practitioner to the broader community. We firmly believe that at any time, there should be a collegial approach to health care, and it is even more disturbing that that the American Medical Association has engaged... in behaviour and practices to discredit Nurse Practitioners during the pandemic. The ACNP fights for the right of every person to choose their health care provider, as do the AANP, and we know that many people do choose a Nurse Practitioner, despite the opposition, negative media and barriers we experience. It is time to call out this behaviour for what it is, and we call on other professional health care associations to join us in agreement that there is no place for turf wars or anti-competitive behaviour in health care. We must support patient autonomy and choice. Sonja Elia, a nurse practitioner and Manager of Immunisations at the RCH said "it was so important to keep kids healthy and vaccinated...many vac...cinations offered through programs at school, and with the learning year disrupted in Victoria, children were missing out on essential and repeat doses." 01.01.2022 The ACNP facebook page is unfortunately caught in the current media dispute between Government and facebook. Therefore, if you are searching for the ACNP on facebook, it will all look a little empty for now! Until it is resolved, please feel free to jump on our other platforms and keep up to date with ACNP. See you there! Twitter: @acnp_national Linked In: Australian College of Nurse Practitioners Instagram: @acnpnational #facebookmediaban #caughtinthemiddle #facebookaustralia
