24.01.2022 I know that my existence does not require other people to understand all my intricacies. But when presumptions and an unwillingness to listen and learn cause harm or erase my lived experience, thats when it does matter.

21.01.2022 Members of ACON's communities are invited to complete the following online survey about your understanding of health and health care. You will be asked questions about how you use health services, talk with doctors and other health workers and how you look after your health. More information about this project is provided online, prior to the start of the survey. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. If you get interrupted during the survey, your answers are auto...matically saved for a week, so you can come back and finish it later. The survey will remain open and available for you to complete until 25th of September 2020. This project has been approved by the Human Research and Ethics Committee of the Western Sydney Local Health District (No. 2020/ETH00943). Take the survey here bit.ly/3buoBrj

21.01.2022 To help mark our 35th anniversary and October's Mental Health Month, community stalwart and icon Peter de Waal has very kindly donated to ACON a framed poster for the Community Support Network featuring his late partner Peter ‘Bon’ Bonsall-Boone. The poster was part of a series entitled ‘You Can Do Something About AIDS’ released in 1991 to raise awareness of the work of the Community Support Network, or CSN, and their amazing volunteers. CSN was founded in 1984 when a group o...f gay men with nursing experience trained volunteers to provide home-care for people impacted by HIV/AIDS. CSN later became the AIDS Support Group and AIDS Home Support, and in 1985, its care and support services were integrated into the AIDS Council of NSW, now ACON. By providing care in the home, CSN volunteers not only gave domestic support, they enabled people living with HIV/AIDS to live with dignity in the environment where they felt safest. CSN volunteers, of which Bon and Peter were proud members, came from diverse backgrounds. Some were gay men, some living with HIV themselves, and others were heterosexual women and men, and members of marginalised communities, including trans men and women and sex workers. 35 years on, ACON is proud to ensure that the work of CSN continues to operate today, and the legacy of its many past volunteers, lives on. How HIV looks now in 2020 is drastically different to the earlier days of the epidemic, however the need to provide care and support for people living with HIV still remains. Bon and Peter are among the many in CSN who provided with care, support and compassion. To them, and the many other volunteers past and present we say thank you for your service and contributions. We pay tribute to their dedication and tireless efforts to support our communities.

21.01.2022 "To know that so many people are struggling it's incredibly difficult. It's been incredibly difficult being a researcher who is also part of the trans and gender diverse community. And to know there's limitations on what can be done at the moment." ACON provides confidential counselling to people in our communities seeking support in relation to their mental health and wellbeing. Contact ACON on (02) 9206 2000, 1800 063 060 or find out more at acon.org.au/mentalhealth

21.01.2022 ACON is exploring options for a Health Centre that would provide specialist health care for people in our communities. We want to make sure that people in our communities are at the heart of this service. We want to ensure that no matter where you live in NSW you can access this service through in-person appointments or via telehealth. Wed like to hear from you, share your thoughts on what good health care looks like for you.... Have your say in the design of the potential Health Centre bit.ly/2F8CnnI

20.01.2022 This morning we woke to the news that American Supreme Court Associate Justice and civil rights hero Ruth Bader Ginsberg passed away. Better known as the Notor...ious RBG Ruth spent her entire career, including the 27 years in the Supreme Court, in the pursuit of equal justice and eliminating discrimination for all. Her decades of work helped create foundational arguments for gender equality and LGBTQ+ human rights in the United States, including the amendment of anti-gay laws and the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Ginsberg's final act of allyship to the LGBTIQ+ community came when her ruling of a recent Supreme Court case (Bostock v. Clayton County) found that anti-LGBTQ discrimination is a form of sex discrimination and illegal under the Civil Rights Act. The ruling grants protections to LGBTQ people experiencing discrimination within their workplace, housing, access to healthcare and education. This quote, discussing marriage equality from a 2015 interview with Bloomberg highlights just how simple allyship can be. RBGs work will be remembered throughout history and remain a foundational example of allyship and commitment to equality for all. To everyone in the LGBTIQ+ community, we want you to know that when you stand up for yourself, the whole community stands with you. Rest in power RBG.

18.01.2022 ACON pays tribute to former NSW Premier John Fahey, who passed away on Saturday, aged 75. Peter Grogan served as ACONs President during Faheys premiership. Grogan said: John Fahey was a progressive Liberal leader who respected and supported our communities and the fight against HIV at a crucial point in the epidemic.... As Premier he personally ensured the long-term security of ACON and its services by delivering a long-term suitable home in the Commonwealth Street office despite internal and external opposition. Eventually, ACON would work out of the Commonwealth Street for over 15 years. Grogan adds: At a personal level he was decent, warm and respectful and he supported people from our communities and our supporters in a range of ways. Vale John Fahey!

Theres nothing like being in a bi+ specific space, even virtually, and Im so excited for what Stand Bi Us will bring.
