24.01.2022 A beautiful message to start the day.

19.01.2022 How compliant is your operating room in the use of surgical masks? In the Spring Journal, Noriko Ogo investigates the effectiveness and compliance of surgical mask wearing across the entire multidisciplinary team. When worn appropriately in accordance with the ACORN standards and the CDC guideline, surgical face masks are associated with a statistically significant lower number of aerosol colony-forming units (CFU) and biological load in the air, Noriko says. The backdrop ...of a global pandemic caused by Covid-19 highlights the importance of wearing surgical face masks in preventing the transmission of respiratory infections. Noriko is a Registered Nurse at Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital with a Master of Clinicial Nursing (Perioperative) from the University of Tasmania. You can read Noriko’s paper on the ACORN journal website https://www.journal.acorn.org.au/jpn/ See more

18.01.2022 The Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN) recently contributed to and endorsed the updated Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Care Standard released by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) on 24 November 2020. The Commission's standard aligns perfectly with the ACORN Antimicrobial Stewardship Standard that was first published in May 2020. ‘ACORN welcomes the Commission's latest initiative knowing that it will be rapidly adopted and implemented by perioperative nurses across Australia who strive every day to deliver safe, high quality perioperative care to ensure the best possible outcome for surgical patients’ said ACORN President, Patricia Flood. 18.01.2022 According to the Australian War Memorial website, 25 Australian nurses lost their lives serving Australia in World War I and 78 died during World War II. While some nurses died through accident or illness, many lost their lives as a result of enemy action or while prisoners of war. Today we pause to remember all men and women who died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 'Antimicrobials: handle with care' Despite being consumed by COVID-19 this year we would be foolish to forget that other critical global infection problems such as antimicrobial resistance have not taken a break. The exact opposite is probably closer to the truth. So we are now almost at the end of the first World Antimicrobial Awareness Week and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has developed a range of resources to promote and support antimicrob...ial stewardship efforts around Australia. These resources include a revised 2020 Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Care Standard which will be launched this Thursday. For details see https://www.safetyandquality.gov.au//antimicrobial-steward ACORN takes AMS very seriously and many of you will be aware that in May 2020 for the first time ACORN released its Antimicrobial Stewardship standard. Members and other periop staff can access ACORN's AMS Standard via a Standards subscription. We are incredibly grateful for the individual and combined efforts of our members everyday to prevent infection and to ensure when needed, antimicrobials are used with great care. Thank you.

15.01.2022 From the 4 November - 13th December 2020 The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) is seeking feedback on their draft Acute Anaphylaxis Clinical Care Standard. It is now open for public consultation and can be accessed at https://www.safetyandquality.gov.au//consultations-clinica The Commission provided the following advice: The Acute Anaphylaxis Clinical Care Standard will support a national approach to the treatment of anaphylaxis, w...hich is the most severe form of allergic reaction, and potentially life-threatening if not treated immediately. More than four million Australians live with allergies and in the past five years, anaphylaxis hospital admissions in Australia increased 46% to 11,856 in 2018-19. The Commission is keen to receive comments on the draft clinical care standard from healthcare professionals, peak healthcare and consumer organisations, consumers and any other interested parties. If you or your health service organisation provide care to people who may require anaphylaxis treatment - or you are personally affected by anaphylaxis - you are invited to comment on the draft Acute Anaphylaxis Clinical Care Standard. Please share the link with anyone in your network who may like to comment. The public consultation will close at 11:59pm (AEDT) on Sunday 13 December 2020. More information For more information, contact the Clinical Care Standards team at [email protected] or visit our website. NB. ACORN will be making an organisational submission however individual and other organisational submissions would be useful for the Commission.

14.01.2022 Up until Christmas I've decided to introduce a series of social media posts called "Health on the Shelf". Each post will highlight a publication that ACORN members and perioperative staff may wish to add to their Summer professional reading list. Think of it like an academic advent calendar. It's part of my usual work as Standards Manager to scan research and public policy developments. For this first post I've selected a paper published in late June 2020 written by Alana Sar...ah Delaforce as part of her PhD candidacy. Why did I choose this paper? Primarily because it's a great example of perioperative nurse investigation. It also shows the importance of collaboration when studying and trying to improve perioperative practice. Finally, I'm personally interested in the results, the authors' recommendations and watching how Alana's work may impact future public policy related to standardising the preoperative anaemia pathway. So with 24 sleeps till Christmas Day, that's Health on the Shelf #1. If you have a reading recommendation that you'd like ACORN to share with your colleagues please contact us via https://www.acorn.org.au/question Delaforce A, Galeel L, Poon E, Hurst C, Duff J, Munday J, Hardy J. 12.01.2022 We loved sending out these ACORN gift packs to our PNW social media winners.and equally loved receiving ‘thank you’ messages back. For this year’s Perioperative Nurses Week back in October, we asked our members to share team photos and post messages of support and recognition to colleagues. It was a simple way to celebrate our profession in the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife a year that we could not gather together for the conference or other member events. Our 12 winners received this prize pack, including a gorgeous slate cheeseboard, gift voucher and the ACORN DVD on scrubbing and gloving.

12.01.2022 It's that time of the year when ACORN is reviewing its 2020 activities, wrapping up its volunteer engagements and planning for a big bold 2021. Amidst all this reporting, planning and strategic thinking I'm struggling to find an ACORN Standards or Roadmap Project-related topic that will engage followers of this FB page. Therefore I am calling on you to ask the questions you'd like answered today and over the next few weeks. As ACORN's Standards Manager, where I can I will pr...ovide you with the right information or refer you other organisations or individuals who can. No topics are off the table and ideally your question and the answer will be helpful or useful for many perioperative nurses. What would you like to know today and over the next few weeks about the ACORN Standards, the ACORN Roadmap Project or ACORN's future plans for the ACORN Standards?

12.01.2022 We have 2 webinars left for the ACORN 2020 Virtual Conference. Please join us on Wednesday at 5.00pm AEDT for our next webinar. Details below.

06.01.2022 Calling all perioperative nurses! Griffith University need your expertise to help them evaluate a short-form measure of perioperative competence (the PPCS-R). In the new year, you will receive an invitation to complete 2 short online anonymous surveys (the second survey invite being 6 months later). Further, a prize draw will be held at the end of the second survey for a chance to win 1 of 3 Perioperative Nursing 3rd Edition (2021) textbooks valued at $75. This research is... being conducted by a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Brigid Gillespie from Griffith University, School of Nursing and Midwifery. Your support and experience you share with Griffith University by participating in this survey would help the international usage of the existing Perceived Perioperative Competence Scale-R for nurses in your field. Participating is entirely voluntary, but on behalf of the team, we hope to receive your anonymous feedback on the online survey. Watch this space! See more
