25.01.2022 Given the ongoing situation with COVID-19 and the need for social distancing, cancellation of non-essential gatherings etc., the committee of the ACPS have taken the difficult decision, in the interest of members and the community, to suspend ACPS meetings until further notice. We know local engagement with people is an important part of our society and we will resume meeting when the current crisis has resolved. We will endeavour to remain active on this page and we encour...age people to continue to post on this page and keep the society going. Until things return to normal, I hope you can all keep on deriving pleasure from your hobby and are able to connect with other growers via electronic platforms; and most importantly, keep well, safe, and financially buoyant! Best wishes, Nick Collins (ACPS Secretary) and Mike Perkins (ACPS President)

12.01.2022 A Story That mite be of interest to growers G’day mite! I was sceptical that mites could be an issue on VFTs until now. This season, I had half my VFTs growing in the greenhouse and half in the open outside (all sitting in water trays) by late spring the ones in the greenhouse looked like crap and close to dying (pot on left) compared to the ones outside (pot on right). Using a 10x eyepiece, I found the ones from the greenhouse to be covered in clusters of tiny orange b...alls that looked like caviar mites! I sprayed the plants with the miticide Kelthane and expect them to recover eventually. On the web, others have reported mites on VFTs, mentioning also that mites like hot dry conditions. On Gardening Australia (Series 31, episode 36) Craig Miller-Randle said that indoor plants could be cleared of mites just by wetting the plants down (leaves, soil and all). So, I conclude that natural rain on the VFTs outside must have kept the mites at bay, and that a simple solution in the greenhouse could be to periodically wet the foliage. One could also just grow plants outside, but I still believe the best looking plants can be obtained in the greenhouse, if kept mite-free. The active ingredient of Kelthane (Dicofol; a DDT derivative) has toxicity to various other types of animals, including us, so wetting would offer a much friendlier solution. As VFTs are native to wet bogs I’m sure you could even submerge pots completely for a day or two without harm, as a way to get complete wetting of the underside of leaves, etc., provided you don’t have too many plants. In retrospect, the symptoms of the mites (black-brown colour at the leaf margins, to all-over) have been pretty common on my plants. Possibly, this issue might explain why we hear of so many people failing to keep VFTs alive, despite adhering to ‘essentials’ such as use of rain water and giving lots of light. The problem might also be exacerbated by the hot& dry growing season in Adelaide. I think we should all do our best to make people aware of this problem, and what appears to be the simple and safe remedy. To my knowledge, the mites don’t seem to bother other types of carnivorous plants just VFTs just seem particularly susceptible. Nick Collins See more
