23.01.2022 Elizabeth Morse is a Clinical Manager at Mercy Health Warrnambool, Victoria and she has dedicated 50 years to nursing and caring for people and nearly 20 workin...g in the aged care sector. "I got into aged care was because of my father. When he was palliative and eventually passed away, I was really impressed with the care and respect that was shown to him. At the time I was not working in nursing but when I saw how well he was cared for I decided to apply for a casual position to see if I liked being back nursing and particularly in aged care. I absolutely loved it and have been working ever since." "I have met and cared for so many amazing people. Every person has a story, all different but all amazing in their own way. I love the interactions with my residents, the smiles, the hugs. I love seeing smiles on the faces of those residents with dementia when they are interacting with you or with an activity. It warms your heart." 20.01.2022 Thank you to EveryAGE Counts for hosting an insightful webinar this morning addressing ageism, featuring Jane Caro and Ashton Applewhite as guests. Attitudes towards ageing and older Australians must shift. ACSA supports EveryAGE Counts in the important work they do to address ageism and this unacceptable discrimination which has been glaringly exposed throughout the findings of the Royal Commission and the COVID-19 pandemic. Today's discussion highlighted that it is not the... passing of time that makes getting older difficult. It is the ageism and discrimination that people face as they age, which tells us that being older is something to be ashamed of. People age as individuals. It is unjust and unreasonable to categorise members of our society based on their age and we must all be responsible for changing attitudes and behaviours towards older Australians. Be an agent of change. Join ACSA in the movement against ageism by taking the pledge at EveryAGE Counts > www.everyagecounts.org.au #ageism #humanrights

20.01.2022 Getting the Federal Government to consider aged care to be a critical skill for the country, not only during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been something ACSA have been lobbying for for some time. "We know that registered nurses for aged care have been on the list for some time, but we do think that there is a need that we hope is addressed for care workers to also be on that critical skills list," Patricia Sparrow, ACSA CEO said. "When you've got to triple your workforce by 205...0, and you're under the pressure that aged care providers have been under through the COVID pandemic, you want to have as many different opportunities and options for workers as possible." 18.01.2022 A free national resource is helping aged care providers ensure they are optimally prepared for fires, floods and other emergencies, equipped to respond comprehensively and recover swiftly. The 'Toolkit for Assessing Disaster Resilience for Aged Care Facilities' is the culmination of a two-year project to create a unique resource for aged care providers to assess their ability to sustain operations, adapt and be self-reliant in the face of adversity. Developed by the Torrens R...esilience Institute, Flinders University (TRI) with funding from the South Australian and Australian Governments, it includes a scorecard that measures the four components of resilience, together with practice scenarios for use in training exercises. Aged care provider Resthaven was involved in testing the scorecard. "The scorecard benefited Resthaven by identifying risks, and analysing systems and processes in place to support the continuity of service in the event of an unforeseen disaster, said Resthaven Chief Executive Officer Darren Birbeck. 15.01.2022 Home care has been front and centre this week with the Royal Commission. Thats as it should be, given how many people use home care in one form or another, and that home care is one of the major issues to address for the future of the entire system. Counsel made a series of proposals for the future of home care, looking at a range of factors including funding, design and governance. Particularly pleasing to note is the view that the CHSP and Home Care Packages Program shoul...d be merged, noting that there are some service types (like meals and community transport) that will require different treatment. You can find the 10 draft propositions here > https://agedcare.royalcommission.gov.au//RCD.9999.0459.000 ACSA is holding an online consultation with our members on Monday 7 September, to seek input from not-for-profit providers on the 10 draft propositions. 11.01.2022 "In my experience as a quality and risk professional, nurse adviser, educator and executive manager, people working in aged care are doing an extraordinary job. Nurses, carers and other workers are mindful of the gaps in service provision and want to do more. Many are telling me that they are finding it incredibly challenging getting up for work each day when confronted by accusations that they are uncaring, underperforming, ill-prepared and undeserving. 04.01.2022 ACSA welcomes the Federal Government's recent announcement of a further $132.2 million in its response to the Royal Commission’s report on COVID-19 and its commitment to implementing all of the Commission’s recommendations. Australia has learnt a lot about protecting the health and wellbeing of #agedcare residents during this global pandemic, and it’s significant and welcome that the government has committed funding so the sector receives support to further implement the spe...cific recommendations of the Royal Commission. But this and other additional funding and support provided throughout the pandemic do not cover all of the COVID-related costs. One of the key pieces of work now lies in improving the interface between the health, hospital and aged care sectors, ensuring future planning is more integrated. We urge the government to revisit and implement the ACSA framework as a solid blueprint for how this could best be achieved across the nation: https://bit.ly/3lqQeVs These recommendations and actions respond to specific issues experienced through the pandemic and it's incredibly important to address these. But it will be in big picture reform that we can truly address the underlying issues in aged care.

03.01.2022 2020 has been unexpected and difficult for all of us both personally and professionally. Today marks World Suicide Prevention Day, a day we are encouraged to ask those we care about, R U OK? and to reach out and talk about the challenges and difficulties we are facing as individuals. These past few months have brought challenges to our doorstep that we simply didnt see coming. In many cases, our normal outlets and coping mechanisms are no longer available because there... is no normal anymore, and everything and everyone has been impacted. Today ACSA will be meeting with our Victorian members to discuss 'Moral Stress Amongst Healthcare Workers During COVID-19', a helpful evidence-based paper that draws on many lessons from the military to better understand the sustained impact that COVID-19 will have on the care workforce. The paper, a collaboration between the Centre of Excellence for PTSD (Canada) and Phoenix Australia Centre of Excellence for Post Traumatic Mental Health (Australia), generates insights and strategies for individuals, leaders, and organisations in healthcare. You can download it here > https://bit.ly/35hk8qK The ACSA team continue to be incredibly proud of the aged care workforce who are showing up daily and making a difference in the lives of older Australians. We encourage you all to remember that in order to be there for others, its imperative that we also look after ourselves and the people who mean the most to us. #WSPD2020 #RUOKDay #mentalhealth
