21.01.2022 Good hearing and communication skills are important at all stages of life. Hearing loss (and related ear diseases) can be avoided through preventative actions such as: protection against loud sounds; good ear care practices and immunization. Hearing loss (and related ear diseases) can be addressed when it is identified in a timely manner and appropriate care sought. People at risk of hearing loss should check their hearing regularly. People having hearing loss (or rel...ated ear diseases) should seek care from a health care provider. SPEECH PATHOLOGY & HEARING When we are young we acquire speech and language through hearing and imitation. Normal hearing allows children to have access to the full range of speech sounds. However, if a child has a hearing loss, they will not hear these speech sounds correctly and this can affect how their vocabulary and receptive-expressive language develops. Speech Pathologists can work with people who are hard of hearing by: supporting them to hear through the use of technology (like cochlear implants or hearing aids), helping build listening skills, teaching other communication forms (such as AUSLAN or Key Word Sign), helping build skills to process verbal language and speaking.
20.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to all of our dads! A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.Unknown
19.01.2022 The rise in COVID-19 cases have us all feeling a little anxious, but we want to assure you that the ACSP team will continue to support your family with safe practices during your sessions. It is important for your child to continue to work towards their communication skills, and we will keep you and your family safe while doing so with our COVID-Safe processes. Some of the steps that will be taken when attending an appointment include: - Families will receive an SMS 48 hours ...prior to your child's appointment. This SMS will include screening questions to ensure your safety and the safety of our team. - If you, your child or anyone they have had close contact with has been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19, is required to isolate, or has developed fever or respiratory symptoms (i.e. cough, sore throat, shortness of breath etc.), Please CANCEL your face to face session and schedule a telehealth session instead. - Your speech pathologist will be wearing a mask during the session. When practicing speech sounds, your speech pathologist will be wearing a face shield, so your child can see their mouth. - We will be maintaining a 1.5m distance as much as possible. - At the start of the appointment, the child and speech pathologist will wash their hands, and regularly sanitise throughout the session. - If you would prefer to book a telehealth session (via Zoom) rather than a face to face session please let us know. If you have any concerns, please feel free to call. Stay safe and well. Andrea Cooper Speech Pathology See more

07.01.2022 Today is 'International Stuttering Awareness Day'! So we thought we would share some facts about stuttering. Stuttering is a speech disorder that causes interruptions in the rhythm or flow of speech.... The exact cause of stuttering is unknown. Stuttering can affect children, adolescents and adults. Around 1% of the population experiences stuttering at any given time and as many as 5% across a life time. Stuttering usually starts in early childhood, often by the age of 3. It may start gradually over days, week or months, or it can be sudden, over hours or a day. Stuttering may change in type or frequency over time. It may decrease or seem to go away for periods of time. Recent research in Australia indicates that 8.5% of 3 year old children experience stuttering. Not all children who start stuttering will continue. As many as 70-75% of children who start to stutter are thought to recover naturally without treatment. Early intervention from a speech pathologist is recommended for children who stutter. This is thought to be the best time to reduce stuttering. Stuttering does not limit your success! Many famous people have had a stutter, including; King George VI, Winston Churchill, Rowan Atkinson, Emily Blunt, Samuel L. Jackson, James Earl Jones, Nicole Kidman, Marilyn Monroe, Sam Neill, Bruce Willis, Elvis Presley, Ed Sheeran, Kenrick Lamar, Shaquille O'Neal, Lewis Carroll, Alan Turing https://youtu.be/woJnudD797Q

02.01.2022 MEDICARE REBATES FOR SPEECH PATHOLOGY SERVICES Some children and adults may be able to receive assistance with the cost of private speech pathology sessions through Medicare. The Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program is one of the Medicare programs which provides access for eligible clients to a Medicare rebate for speech pathology services. For example, some people may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, for up to five speech pathology services, per calendar year... under a CDM. People of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent may also be eligible for a further five follow-up services through this CDM plan. Not all people with communication or swallowing difficulties are eligible for Medicare rebates. Your family doctor/GP is the best person to talk to about Medicare and the different plans and options that may be available for your child. A Chronic Disease Management Plan is sometimes also known as an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC).
