21.01.2022 ACTCOSS has today marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women by calling for adequate support for ACT community services supporting women and children experiencing violence. As well as funding for crisis services, we need support for activities in prevention, early intervention and recovery. ACTCOSS has called for additional funding for community-based domestic and family violence services to:... - Assist the children of women accessing their support, for example, through trauma counselling - Support women on temporary visas experiencing family violence who are excluded from Commonwealth supports - Meet the needs of women with disability experiencing violence - Ensure women can access adequate legal representation - Implement minimum standard Respectful Relationships Education programs. ACT women with disabilities experience violence at approximately twice the rate of non-disabled women. We need to ensure that all women including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women and women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can access appropriate services that will provide them with protection and support. On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we must acknowledge that combating violence against women is a shared responsibility of all of us. In the ACT if you need assistance you can call the Domestic Violence Crisis Service ACT 24/7 on 02 62 800 900. 19.01.2022 ACOSS's CEO Cass Goldie joins the ACTCOSS team to call on the Federal Government to #RaisetheRateforGood

19.01.2022 Around 28,000 Canberrans are facing a bleak new year following the Federal Government’s cruel cut to the Coronavirus Supplement effective from 1 January. ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) CEO Dr Emma Campbell said: While many of us are lucky enough to have a job to return to after the holiday break, there are thousands of Canberrans who are unable to find work and cannot cover basic expenses like food and housing. Following the cruel new year cut to JobSeeker, a pers...on who is single with no children now receives just $358 a week (just over $50 a day) while a person with a child will get just $381 a week ($54 a day). 18.01.2022 ACTCOSS has provided inputs on the Australian Government's development of a new National Disability Strategy (NDS). In our paper we stress the need for concrete measures and investments under each of the themes, the need to articulate the role of municipal government, and the need to clarify and distinguish actions under the Strategy from actions by the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The paper calls for a strong NDS to ensure action on access and inclusion in education, justice, transport, the built environment and other priority areas and population groups: https://www.actcoss.org.au//inputs-new-national-disability

18.01.2022 ACTCOSS is joining this National Day of Action against the cruel Christmas cut to the Coronavirus Supplement which will take away any chance for people doing it tough to start rebuilding their lives or even keep a secure roof over their head. Almost 23,000 people in the ACT are currently receiving income support payments that have been boosted by the Coronavirus Supplement. The $550 Coronavirus Supplement saw poverty rates decrease significantly across all regions of the AC...T. When the rate was reduced by $300 per fortnight in late September 2020 (to $250 per fortnight), poverty rates increased to a level significantly higher than the pre-COVID-19 poverty rate. It is estimated that there are now around 38,000 people living in poverty in the ACT. We need a permanent and adequate increase to the rate of JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments to prevent more people being forced into poverty. #RaisetheRateforGood #stopthexmascut See more

16.01.2022 In 2019/20 ACT has 2nd lowest rate in Australia of youth diversion by Police to non-court actions. ACT needs to do a better job of diverting young offenders away from the court system into support like family conferences and other programs. 14.01.2022 Today we made a submission to the Senate inquiry into Coronavirus support, calling for a permanent and adequate increase to the rate of JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments. Our submission today coincides with the National Day of Action against the cruel Christmas cut to the Coronavirus Supplement which will take away any chance for people doing it tough to start rebuilding their lives or even keep a secure roof over their head. In our submission, ACTC...OSS has continued our call for the Federal Government to #RaisetheRateforGood. An increase to the base rate of JobSeeker of $185-$275 per week would allow people to cover the essentials. There must be additional support for people in private rental, people with disability or illness and people with family caring responsibilities. We need to fix our social security system for good so that it keeps people out of poverty. 14.01.2022 On #WorldAIDSDay we must continue to raise awareness in the community about the issues surrounding HIV & AIDS, to show support for people living with HIV & to commemorate people who have died. We recognise the immense achievements of people living with HIV to reduce HIV transmission and attain highly effective treatments. We also remember those lost to the disease, and remind ourselves that despite great gains, as a community and as individuals, we must continue to advocate f...or access to testing, treatment and care. ACTCOSS is advocating for an increase in community-based and publicly available sexual health services including in ACT’s West and North. ACTCOSS commits to continuing to listen to and be guided by people with lived experience and continuing to remember the importance of equal access to public health services. 13.01.2022 As we count down towards New Years Eve ACTCOSS has been speaking out in the media about tomorrow’s disastrous cuts to Jobseeker which threaten to push 28,000 Canberrans even further into poverty in a labour market which has taken major hits to key sectors. The cuts will leave too many people subsisting on just over $50 a day which is not enough to feed a family, pay rent, maintain transport and fork out for spiraling energy costs in a high cost city like Canberra. We need to acknowledge the calls across business, unions, respected voices from all parties about the need to #RaisetheRateforGood #auspol #actpol

12.01.2022 The ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) and Winnunga Nimmityjah today expressed our deep concern over the high rates of incarceration of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the ACT detailed in a report just released. At current levels, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children are locked up at 18 times the rate of non-Indigenous children. This is the highest rate of incarceration in the last five years and the highest rate in Aust...ralia. The ACT Government needs to urgently implement all 28 recommendations from the Our Booris, Our Way report. We need additional investment to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, youth and families and to build capacity of Aboriginal community-controlled organisations. We also call on the ACT Government to appoint an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Children’s Commissioner to the ACT Human Rights Commission. Urgent policy and legal reform are also needed, as is a child protection system capable of ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children while working to keep families together and/or connected. Other urgent investments include the development of a First Nations Housing Strategy for the ACT including a pathway to a community-controlled Aboriginal housing organisation, and the development of a comprehensive Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander policy statement. 06.01.2022 Sobering piece on 'affluence washing' if we ignore poverty and inequality issues in #CBR in the Riot Act today from Zoya Pattel. The piece notes the story we tell of Canberra to the world is one of affluence and prosperity yet inequality exists and can be even more difficult to see, thanks to ‘affluence-washing’ how the vision of our city that’s popularised in the mainstream doesn’t account for the significant pockets of disadvantage in the ACT. Speaking to todays ACOSS a...nd UNSW report that highlights vast differences in income distribution and wealth in Australia as well as ACTCOSS advocacy that has highlighted that almost 40,000 Canberrans live in households that are among Australia’s most disadvantaged and the increase in people living in poverty since COVID19 which has increased from just under 30,000 people to just over 38,000 people, Zoya writes "It can be hard to picture this scale of inequality if you’re part of the lucky majority of Canberrans who enjoy the best parts of our awesome city-state. The visual reminders of hardship are often limited to a few beggars outside the Canberra Centre or local shops, perhaps the occasional encounter with someone sleeping rough in a public place. These extreme examples mask the larger swathe of Canberrans who live in the terrible grey area between hardship and what we consider poverty to look like. These are the people who have a roof over their heads but worry daily about whether they can afford next fortnight’s rent payment. The people who can feed their families, but on a budget so tight Christmas presents are an illusion. The people who can only afford to travel between work and home because their petrol money or bus fares are precious and have to be prioritised. These are people who are clinging to their foothold out of poverty with the tips of their toes, one small shove away from the abyss".
