24.01.2022 ACT Health is warning Canberrans about the potential for a thunderstorm asthma event in the ACT region today (Sunday 22 November) and tomorrow (Monday 23 November). The warning comes as we see elevated pollen levels and the possibility of severe thunderstorms over the next two days, increasing the risk of a thunderstorm asthma event. People who suffer from hay fever or asthma are encouraged to be vigilant for any worsening of their condition. Thunderstorm asthma can be sudde...n, serious and even life threatening for people with asthma or hay fever. Protect yourself, or someone you care for, from risk by: staying indoors with windows and doors closed staying in air-conditioned premises, and if possible, switching the air conditioner to ‘recycle’ or ‘recirculate’ to reduce the amount of dust entering the building avoiding all vigorous exercise, especially if you have a heart or lung conditions If you experience asthma symptoms which are unrelieved by their usual asthma treatment, seek urgent medical advice. In the event of a medical emergency call 000. If it is safe to do so, check on elderly neighbours or people who you think might need extra help. 23.01.2022 As the weather gets warmer and we learn to live with COVID-19, community events will return to the ACT but they may look different. A new COVID Safe Event Protocol has been developed to assist in returning events to the ACT and provides guidance to event organisers to ensure their event is COVID-safe The new protocol will help organisers plan events with more than 100 people and seek the necessary exemption. Although large events present a higher risk for transmission and... are not yet permitted under the Public Health Directions, an exemption process has now been released to enable some events to recommence. This reflects our strong position but may need to be reviewed if the COVID-19 situation gets worse in the ACT or surrounding areas. As event organisers work hard to restart these events, we ask each and every one of you to play your part: Stay 1.5 metres from other groups as much as possible. Wash and sanitise your hands regularly. Practise proper cough etiquette - sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your elbow. Stay home if you’re unwell. Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms (cough, sore throat, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, and loss of smell or taste) no matter how mild. Don’t let complacency set us back. 15.01.2022 Happy Friday Canberra! While this weekend’s weather might not be cause for celebration, our current COVID-19 situation is. This week we reached a big milestone: 100,000 negative COVID-19 tests . ... It’s not time to slack off though so here’s a reminder to make sure if you get a tickle in your throat you should channel your inner dabbing unicorn and practise good cough etiquette! With kids back at school this week, it’s a good time to remind them about coughing into their elbows, sneezing into a tissue and washing their hands for 20 to 30 seconds after sneezing, coughing, going to the bathroom, and before and after eating. Have a good weekend Canberra let’s keep each other safe and strong.
15.01.2022 Just because restrictions continue to ease, doesn’t mean the risk of COVID-19 cases happening in Canberra has. While there have been no cases recorded in the ACT in more than 10 weeks, the virus is still circulating in other states. To make sure there are no undetected cases of COVID-19 circulating in our community, we need people to continue getting tested. We’d like to see testing levels in the ACT return back to 600 to 800 tests a day particularly ahead of, during and... after school holidays. These levels of testing give us a reliable picture of what the COVID-19 situation is in our community and that allows us to ease restrictions and enjoy the Canberra lifestyle we love. Protect yourself, your loved ones and support our businesses who are relying on you to keep things open. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms no matter how mild isolate yourself from others and get tested. The main symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. Less common symptoms are loss of smell, loss of taste, runny nose, muscle pain, joint pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. 15.01.2022 Following a decline of COVID-19 testing numbers across the ACT, Canberrans are being reminded why the process is still so important. We need to start thinking about COVID-19, as a community. It is about creating a safe environment for all Canberrans, says Rachel, a nurse at Canberra Health Services who has been conducting tests since March. The COVID-19 test is quick and not very invasive, usually taking under a minute to complete. The nurse swabs the throat and then each n...ostril, using a less invasive process than was the case earlier in the year. You get a lot of surprised looks on patients’ faces after they realise how easy and quick the process is. Rachel said result response times had also improved, with most patients receiving results within one or two days of being tested. Some patients have even received their results as quickly as 12-14 hours after the test, she said.
15.01.2022 From 9am today, the ACT has further eased Stage 3 restrictions. The key changes are: All gatherings can increase from 200 to 500 (subject to density restrictions being met). To hold gatherings of greater than 500, an exemption in accordance with the ACT COVID Safe Event Protocol is required. More info here http://bit.ly/Event-Protocol The requirement for patrons to be seated while eating and drinking will be removed for outdoor spaces. This reflects evidence that outd...oor spaces present a lower risk of transmission of COVID-19 compared to indoor spaces though not completely risk-free! Being outside means the virus is more likely to disperse and dilute in the air and it’s easier to physically distance yourself from others. To protect yourself and others, you should not mingle with people you don’t know. Three venue capacity rules apply: Option 1: 25 people (excluding staff) across venues with a total usable space of 100 square metres or less. Option 2 for hospitality venues only: 50 people (excluding staff) across venues with total usable space of between 101 and 200 square metres. Option 3 maximum of 500 people for each space, applying the following rules: - one person per four square metres of usable space in each indoor space (excluding staff). - one person per two square metres of usable space in each outdoor space (excluding staff). The next ACT COVID Safe Check Point will be on Friday 27 November 2020. Further information on our page www.covid19.act.gov.au/changes

11.01.2022 Happy Global Handwashing Day! Today (and every day) is the right time to make the 20 to 30 seconds you spend washing your hands count. Commonly missed spots include fingertips, thumbs and back of hands so make sure you’re washing every part of your hands. ... Whilst keeping your hands clean should be an everyday habit, today’s a great reminder of the importance of good hand hygiene. Not only is washing your hands with soap and water for 20 to 30 seconds one of the best defences against the spread of COVID-19, it also prevents the spread of other germs that can lead to salmonella, e. coli, diarrhea, hand-foot-mouth disease and pneumonia. 11.01.2022 The ACT Chief Health Officer has agreed for GIO Stadium Canberra to proceed with a crowd of around 9,600 for this Saturday’s NRL finals match between Canberra Raiders and Cronulla Sharks. The increase in the crowd capacity follows a successful pilot to allow 6,000 spectators at the Brumbies’ grand final, and the Raiders match against the Warriors last weekend. Venues Canberra is closely monitoring the evolving COVID-19 situation to ensure the match operates in line with gov...ernment guidelines and the National COVID-19 Safe Workplace Principles. To support the increased capacity, Venues Canberra will also increase its security presence, with a focus on physical distancing, seating compliance and preventing overcrowding at locations in and around the venue. All attendees will be required to make sure they’re aware of and abide by the COVID-19 terms and conditions including: Keeping 1.5m apart from other groups. Washing /sanitising hands regularly. Sitting in their allocated seat as much as possible. Staying home if they’re unwell. You also won’t be able to bring a bag to the venue to minimise manual handling by security officers. Individual food items or other items such as nappies and baby food can be carried in clear or sealed packaging. Remember, tickets must be pre-purchased through Ticketek. As with all decisions related to COVID-19, this increased crowd capacity may need be reconsidered if there is sudden deterioration in the COVID-19 situation in the ACT. More information is available on GIO Stadium Canberra’s page https://giostadiumcanberra.com.au/covid-19-conditions-of-e/.
10.01.2022 Hey Canberra In the last few days, there has been a drop in the number of people who are getting tested for COVID-19 Part of living with COVID means getting tested whenever you have any COVID-19 symptoms cough, sore throat, fever, shortness of breath, runny nose, and loss of smell or taste no matter how mild they are. Testing is a vital step in managing COVID-19, as it enables early detection and response to cases before there is widespread transmission in the commu...nity. The more we test for COVID-19, the better we can protect ourselves, each other and keep Canberra businesses open With spring well underway, some people may be concerned that the symptoms they experience due to hay fever or asthma are similar to COVID-19 symptoms. If your asthma is well managed, but you develop fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath isolate yourself and get tested. If you are in doubt, phone your GP to discuss. Find a free testing centre near you, at www.covid19.act.gov.au/testing

09.01.2022 Every four hours, a baby in Australia is born sleeping. That's six families every day that will have to grieve the unexpected loss of their baby through stillbirth. Every day, 282 women experience early pregnancy loss before 20 weeks gestation. One in four women under 35 will experience miscarriage; and by age 35, this increases to one in three. Half of all pregnant women over 40 will lose their baby to miscarriage. Today is International Remembrance Day for Pregnancy and ...Infant Loss. Since 2012, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Australia has been advocating for recognition of this important day by lighting up buildings in pink and blue across our nation. In Canberra, a number of local landmarks will be illuminated, including National Carillon, Royal Australian Mint, National Archives of Australia, Bowen Place (Lake Burley Griffin), Canberra Airport, Kings Avenue Bridge, Canberra Times Fountain and Telstra Tower. If you see a landmark lit up tonight, take a moment to reflect on an occurrence that is sadly far more common than many people realise.

08.01.2022 What events do you miss most? It’s okay to miss what we used to consider normal. COVID-19 has made us appreciate many of the things we took for granted, like attending Canberra’s fun and vibrant events. The good news is that many organisers are beginning the transition to make events safe in our new COVID normal. To support this, and to ensure eased restrictions are easily and safely applied, we’ve developed a COVID Safe Event Protocol.... The Event Protocol provides information for organisers on the types of events that will be able to take place in the ACT while COVID-19 restrictions remain in place. It also outlines how organisers can seek the necessary exemption. More information at covid19.act.gov.au/event-protocol Not all events will return immediately, but when they do we will appreciate what we’ve missed. Events ACT

05.01.2022 Elizabeth followed in the footsteps of her family members and decided to study nursing in India. In her 10-year career as a nurse, it was a highlight for her to move to Australia. She’s now working in the Canberra Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Canberra Health Services where she says, it’s a good place to learn and explore more about nursing. When she’s not working Elizabeth enjoys watching movies or cooking, and if it wasn’t for COVID-19 putting a hold on her weddi...ng plans, she would have been married by now to her fiancé who currently lives in Singapore. Elizabeth’s story is a good reminder on #WorldKindnessDay that behind their scrubs, our nurses and midwives have their own lives and hope and dreams. It’s important to always be kind as we never know what’s happening in someone else’s life. #InternationalYearOfTheNurseAndMidwife

Test results (past 24 hours): 579 Negative tests: 100,630 Be COVID Safe when voting on ACT Election Day Ahead of the ACT’s Election Day, Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman is reminding Canberrans voting tomorrow to remember their COVID Safe behaviours at polling locations. With COVID-19 still presenting a risk to the ACT, this Election Day will be a little different to previous ones. While many ACT residents have already voted, it is likely there will still be gatherings at polling places tomorrow, Dr Coleman said. Elections ACT has a rigorous cleaning program at all polling stations, with hygiene officers wiping down surfaces regularly, including voting screens. However, it is still vital that everyone attending a polling location remembers to behave in a COVID Safe manner by maintaining physical distancing and practising good hand and respiratory hygiene. If you are heading to a polling location tomorrow, keep 1.5 metres apart from other people, ensure you follow directions from staff at the polling places, use the hand sanitiser provided, and while there’ll be single-use pencils available you can also bring your own pen or pencil should you wish to do so. Anyone who is feeling unwell and unable to attend a polling location tomorrow should contact Elections ACT on 6205 0033. This phone line will be staffed on Election Day.
