24.01.2022 A rotting external staircase is an eyesore, but more importantly, it's dangerous. In this case the handrail is wobbly, a disaster waiting to happen. With gaps more than 125mm between the rails means it does not even comply with Australia's building code. After a little effort and a modest investment, not only does it comply, it looks great, and there's the owner happy in front.

23.01.2022 Our client wanted to find more space in a Willoughby granny flat. We agreed that the limited area behind the flat was not used, even though it faced north. By connecting into existing water and drainage we created an external laundry with a deck leading to the rear door. The wet area was clad with Villaboard and Mini Orb laid horizontally. The result was good value for the investment and a great place to read a book in the sun.

18.01.2022 18 months ago we flattened an asbestos house next to a childcare centre. Although not completely finished, we reckon our two storey worker's cottage came up pretty smart. We looked at different styles particularly cladding for timber framed homes -and settled on a 'weather board' look using Scyon boards alongside vertical sheeting. Scyon is cement based, fire resistant and offers good thermal qualities. After we had done most of the exterior painting, I sat back and thought... you look like a chocolate eclair... I just want to eat you. Incidentally, the asbestos removal was done by professionals over Xmas (that was the only time available, when there were no children present). It was half the cost we had budgeted for and today the child care centre is a client of Action Cat's.

16.01.2022 The front fence should be part of your overall renovation and in keeping with the character of your home. In this case, brick posts were built on significant footings (to prevent the fence from moving or leaning over. The posts were rendered using stainless steel beads to provide crisp edges that don't rust. Hardwood timber rails and 140mm palings gave the fence a strong masculine look to compliment this timber framed cottage.

14.01.2022 Fences, they don't really do much - but they can look untidy or even ugly if not maintained. And a fence can enhance a property if done tastefully and in keeping with the design architecture of the property. In this case, a neighbour built a paling fence directly behind a decorative picket fence. My client liked her pickets, but not the fence behind. One solution was to change to flat top wide slats with a cap on the top. It disguised the paling fence nicely.

11.01.2022 My brother bought this 1929 Caterpillar 15 Crawler at auction after the owner died some years ago. The owner had kept the machine in Naracoorte, South Australia for over 60 years. By the way, the original Caterpillar logo was designed based literally on the way a living caterpillar crawls. Caterpillar, still an iconic brand in the mining and earth moving businesses.
