25.01.2022 Friezes and fininals. The final coat of paint is applied to the eaves as the sun sets on a Willoughby property.

24.01.2022 A rotting external staircase is an eyesore, but more importantly, it's dangerous. In this case the handrail is wobbly, a disaster waiting to happen. With gaps more than 125mm between the rails means it does not even comply with Australia's building code. After a little effort and a modest investment, not only does it comply, it looks great, and there's the owner happy in front.

24.01.2022 External wall penetrations can present potential water damage - rising damp, rot, termite activity and ongoing problems with mould in living rooms. Here's a simple answer in correcting a risky installation.

23.01.2022 Our client wanted to find more space in a Willoughby granny flat. We agreed that the limited area behind the flat was not used, even though it faced north. By connecting into existing water and drainage we created an external laundry with a deck leading to the rear door. The wet area was clad with Villaboard and Mini Orb laid horizontally. The result was good value for the investment and a great place to read a book in the sun.

23.01.2022 What a difference a little maintenance and a bit of paint can do. There is an OH&S issue, but the improvements alone are going to maintain the value of your property.

22.01.2022 On our first visit to the property, we found it was in a bad way, extremely heavy mould in most rooms - but the house had good bones. The first job was to stop the moisture getting in around the footings, followed by a total cleanup. We removed the mould, painted inside and out, landscaped the front and rear, carreried out some minor building works and applied a little imagination to make the property more appealing. Project management and building skills combined to provide the necessary 'sizzle'. The result $2.4M, $320,000 over reserve.

22.01.2022 Sometimes it's just easier to get a machine to do the job quicker, easier and probably cheaper, especially when labour is your biggest cost. However, machines and equipment require access and room to move, turn around while avoiding damage to property.

21.01.2022 Here's a quicky. Asbestos shed - not only is it ugly, it's got to go - but what to do with it until you are ready to demolish.

21.01.2022 Timber decks are very popular additions to houses. Being exposed to weather, rain, heat and cold, constant movement, expansion and contraction means they require maintenance. Ensuring the timber work is properly sealed and repainted regularly will increase the lifespan of you deck.

20.01.2022 Timber rot - common in window sills. Not only unsightly, it will only get worse if not attended to. Provided the vertical framework of the window is structurally sound, the sill can be removed and new tmber inserted in its place. Once sealed and painted, the window comes up like new.

19.01.2022 Many extensions have a small footprint but involve all the skills of building a house from scratch - excavation, steel & concrete footings, piers, brickwork, framing, cladding, insulation, gyprock, roofing, electrical, plumbing, sewer work and drainage. In this case we cut into the side of an existing bathroom and extended it by three square meters.

19.01.2022 A recent balcony restoration on a turn of the century homestead in Neutral Bay. Maintenance with exposed timber is essential to maintain property value.

18.01.2022 18 months ago we flattened an asbestos house next to a childcare centre. Although not completely finished, we reckon our two storey worker's cottage came up pretty smart. We looked at different styles particularly cladding for timber framed homes -and settled on a 'weather board' look using Scyon boards alongside vertical sheeting. Scyon is cement based, fire resistant and offers good thermal qualities. After we had done most of the exterior painting, I sat back and thought... you look like a chocolate eclair... I just want to eat you. Incidentally, the asbestos removal was done by professionals over Xmas (that was the only time available, when there were no children present). It was half the cost we had budgeted for and today the child care centre is a client of Action Cat's.

16.01.2022 The front fence should be part of your overall renovation and in keeping with the character of your home. In this case, brick posts were built on significant footings (to prevent the fence from moving or leaning over. The posts were rendered using stainless steel beads to provide crisp edges that don't rust. Hardwood timber rails and 140mm palings gave the fence a strong masculine look to compliment this timber framed cottage.

16.01.2022 Imagine this was a laundry without a window. We included an arched servery in this kitchen reno in a Heritage listed apartment. Classic design, where light, living and entertaining is easy and open. By the way, the laundry finished up in a cupboard. Easy.

14.01.2022 Fences, they don't really do much - but they can look untidy or even ugly if not maintained. And a fence can enhance a property if done tastefully and in keeping with the design architecture of the property. In this case, a neighbour built a paling fence directly behind a decorative picket fence. My client liked her pickets, but not the fence behind. One solution was to change to flat top wide slats with a cap on the top. It disguised the paling fence nicely.

14.01.2022 It is concerning when you see things like this. Damp course going underground - a receipe for disaster. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets. Easy to fix, just contact us.

13.01.2022 Action Cat is licensed to carry out all forms of Water Proofing - internal and external work. Bathrooms, laundries, kitchens, any wet area. We also carry out external works on verandahs, decks, roofing, window and door flashings, damp courses, rising damp and subterranean ag-lines.

13.01.2022 This bay window was in serious neglect - rotten timbers were allowing further water damage internally and the window was becoming structurally unsafe. One day's work saw the removal of the old window and installation of a new one with a new damp course. The existing internal louvers where re-installed at the back of the new window.

13.01.2022 Stone work and pointing. It's a pain but worth it if you like your stone work to look smart.

12.01.2022 Living close to one another can often be trying. Erecting a privacy screen can do wonders - making an area more secluded, but at the same time, allowing the garden and light to show through.

12.01.2022 Here, the floor plan was revised to make the entrance under cover alongside the carport. This allowed the old entrance to become an on-suite with the front room the master bedroom. The external limestone masonry was treated as a natural feature in the on-suite. The deck was added to enjoy the gorgeous back yard.

12.01.2022 A garage with a view! A simple 5m x 3m extension sitting on a concrete slab with a timber frame and clad with Weathertex and a Colourbond roof. The 'Manshed' is lined with gyprock and finished with cornice and skirting boards to compliment the existing home.

11.01.2022 My brother bought this 1929 Caterpillar 15 Crawler at auction after the owner died some years ago. The owner had kept the machine in Naracoorte, South Australia for over 60 years. By the way, the original Caterpillar logo was designed based literally on the way a living caterpillar crawls. Caterpillar, still an iconic brand in the mining and earth moving businesses. Check the logo out on the front of Kym's 1929 Cat crawler getting a run at his depot in Naracoorte.

07.01.2022 Under pool areas can be unsightly when overgrown and neglected. A new set of stairs matching existing paving work and under pool screening constructed with Merbau decking timber mounted on metal door frames. From an eyesore to a great entertaining area with the added benefit of storage.

07.01.2022 Below at top is a typical driveway and path fronting a Californian Bungalow or Federation home. Paving is a popular, cost effective way to give your home a facelift or get the property ready for sale. Simply put - spend a few thousand dollars to better present your home to receive an additional $20,000 bid at auction.

06.01.2022 I'm frequently asked what I would do if I were getting a particular house for sale. Replacing carpets, painting and landscaping are the obvious tasks. However, repairs to cracks in walls and removal of mould on brick and timber work gives a property a big lift. In many cases it is as simple as scrubbing the mouldy areas with sugar soap.

06.01.2022 Want to get rid of those circular pillars or greek columns? It is easy to transform your entrance without re-building it. The posts here are solid H3 pre primed treated pine - 200mm thick. The columns can be fluted, but the client wanted to keep them simple. The collars were added once the pillars became part of the structure. Creative client and a nice job to execute.

06.01.2022 Taking a messy area in your shed and making it clean, tidy and functional for around $2,000.

05.01.2022 A property in Willoughby needed a tidy up before going to market. A tree was removed and a simple walkway constructed that did not overtake the lawn area. Crazy Pave stepping stones works well and blends into the landscape.

04.01.2022 From an uncomfortable garage to drive into - and way too many scratches, to a smart contemporary new roller door that's infinitely more accessible. All in a day's work.

02.01.2022 This drop down staircase was installed in the hallway to provide in-roof storage. Simple, inexpensive, easy to install and a cost effective way to increase both floor space and property value.
