18.01.2022 ACTIVATE ANSWERS... DO COMPRESSION SOCKS HELP RUNNERS WITH ACHILLES TENDONITIS??? . Achilles tendonitis is one of the most common ankle foot over use conditions we see in the clinic. A recent study of recreational runners looked at the risk factors for developing achilles tendonitis. . They found ... previous episode of achilles tenodonitis in the past 12 months having a rigid training schedule wearing compression socks were all risk factors for the development of achilles tendonitis . Wearing compression socks probably seems like a weird thing to CAUSE achilles tendonitis and when you dig a little deeper it seems the runners who wore the socks are more likely to have suffered previous episodes of tendonitis. They are most likely wearing them because they feel like theyre giving support to the area and allowing them to continue running. . While they might help you look the part, what compression socks are not doing is actually fixing your achilles tendonitis. You may even be creating a bigger problem by continuing to overload the tendon creating chronic inflammation. . A physio will take an indepth look at your biomechanics, muscle strength, muscle length, muscle control around the foot and further up the chain to your knee, hip, pelvis and trunk as well as your training and recovery schedule. We want you to enjoy running and will look to create a treatment plan that will assist with alleviating the pain and reducing the chance it will return. . Got a question? Pop it in the comments below or send us a private message. See more

14.01.2022 ACTIVATE ANSWERS: DO YOU DO ACUPUNCTURE? . At Activate Physiotherapy our physios provide dry needling and western acupuncture to assist our patients to recover. We have all been through additional training in order to offer this treatment option - but not all physio clinics are able to needle. . How does it help? ... Dry needling is a type of acupuncture where your physio will insert needles to relieve myofascial tension. So instead of digging in and massaging out the trigger points or sort spots we use a needle to do the same job (trust us its a lot more comfortable in many instances). . Western acupuncture may have some of the techniques of acupuncture but our physios apply it after a medical diagnosis is made. Rather than inserting needles to restore the flow of energy or Qi, we explain its effect via the stimulation of the skins nervous system and the subsequent release of chemicals in the body that help to alleviate pain and tension. . If youd like to try dry needling or western acupuncture we are more than happy to discuss your condition and if it may be of benefit to you. We offer obligation free calls with our physios. 13.01.2022 NEW ARTICLE: What is a scaphoid fracture? . Did you know the blood vessels of the scaphoid bone only supply the middle and wrist end of the bone? The end of the bone that is closer to your thumb has a tenuous blood flow and when a fracture occurs in a certain place of the scaphoid it can cut off the blood supply to this part all together. . This is why a fracture to your scaphoid can be serious business. Read about this and more in our new article that covers all you need to... know about scaphoid fractures: https://activatephysiotherapy.com.au/scaphoid-fracture/ . 11.01.2022 HOW TOP INCREASE YOUR GLUTE ACTIVATION DURING SQUATS . During our Pilates and exercises physiology sessions we love to add resistance bands to help to fire up the glute muscles . Squats are a great functional exercise that help to target both the hip stabilisers as well as the prime movers - the glutes or butt... . To add focus on the glutes without having to add weights to your program you can try to add a resistance band or booty band. Placing it around your thighs just above the knee with force you to work the hip muscles that help to hold the legs outward. This is one of the most common ways to use the resistance band... BUT did you know you get MORE activation by placing the band around your feet instead! . This is a great way to increase glute and hip stabiliser strength without placing additional stress on the lower limbs especially the knees and can be done by people of all ages and fitness levels. . Try it and let us know how you go! See more

03.01.2022 WHAT IS A STITCH? . Weve had a number of people come into see us that have taken up running as the weather warms up, to kick start their spring exercise fitness and maybe shed some of those COVID kilos. So we thought wed take a bit of a running flavour for some of the posts this week (although this info can be applied to non-runners as well). . So what is a stitch? You may have experienced pain in the side from running and other physical activities. The proper name for a si...de-stitch is Exercise-Related Transient Abdominal Pain (ETAP). . ETAP is pain in the abdomen, that can range from mild to quite severe, thats brought on by activity and its the bane of many runners lives, although it can also affect swimmers, horse-riders and even motor-cyclists. Its the latter of these that caused researchers to lay the blame on friction between the layers of membranes in the abdominal cavity for side stitch pain. They went further to say that ingestion of sugary drinks could cause the abdominal organs to swell or bloat, slowing digestion and increasing the friction even more. . If you remember our post about the amounts of sugar in some popular drinks its probably advisable to stick with water as the best hydration before and during exercise. . So what are our top tips to reduce the odds of a stitch next time you get active? Theres most evidence for these three: Make sure youre well hydrated by drinking lots of water in the 12 hours before you exercise. In the two hours immediately before, drink only small amounts so you stay hydrated, but your stomachs not bloated (and therefore less likely to press on the lining of your abdominal cavity). Dont eat large volumes of food for at least two hours before exercise (perhaps even three to four hours before if youre especially prone to stitches). Avoid very sugary drinks, such as fruit juice or soft drinks, before or during your exercise. Sugary foods like lollies may also be a problem. . If you do get a stitch, you might find the following techniques can bring relief: deep breathing pushing or stretching the affected area bending over forward . AND... just count yourself lucky that we dont still use the treatment recommended in Roman times by Pliny the Elder "the urine of a she-goat, injected into the ears" See more
