25.01.2022 An autocratic leadership style is typified by a command-and-control approach. They make all the decisions and do not consult with their team for their points of view. They do not like to be contradicted or their authority questioned. They do not like to be perceived as weak. Fortunately, this style of leadership is largely a thing of the past. However, you may experience elements of this leadership style still. Have you ever worked for a leader displaying an autocratic style?... How did you feel? How did you manage what you could control in that situation? Let me know in the comments below. #careerchange #careerbydesign #careercoaching #careercoach #career #dreamjob #careergoals #careerdevelopment #careertips #inspiration #careerplanning #interviewtips #careeropportunities #careerstrategy #goals #resumetips #personaldevelopment #careercounselling #careerguidance #smallbusiness #training #motivation #jobsearch #interview #benefits #jobtips #personalbranding #jobs #activatingcareers #activateyourcareer

23.01.2022 Visionary leaders are confident in their leadership and can envisage a new way forward and brighter future, as well as inspire the people around them and bring them on the journey. During uncertain times, a visionary leader can forge a path forward, creating clarity and a feeling of certainty. Someone displaying a visionary leadership style is a strategic thinker and a skilled communicator. Someone who values innovation and embraces the unknown. Resilience, focus and strong o...rganisational abilities are also qualities you will find in a visionary leader. Have you been fortunate enough to work in a team or project with a visionary leader? 22.01.2022 What motivates you? This is my dog Beau who is highly motivated by food. Not too long ago I put up a post with a picture of a pair of moccasins and declaring that I am unmotivated on a Monday and that is okay! I did not post up any posts on social media for the next ten days or so. Total inaction. It is okay to acknowledge that feeling and take a rest and a pause if you need it. It is important to determine what motivates you. I realised that I am motivated by deadlines. Rec...ently I have been having business and personal brand coaching by Krystle Alfarero every Wednesday evening by Zoom. Often I would do my homework the night before or just before the coaching session to make sure we could discuss during the session and learn and grow and move on to the next topic. I was the same at school studying for exams or doing assignments. Krystle reminded me that every time you stop and go through a period of inaction, you are not moving towards your goal or dream. Figure out what motivates you. It will be a different experience for everyone. Tap into that and take small steps towards your micro-goals, which will turn into bigger goals getting you closer to your dream job or career! What motivates you? Let me know in the comments below!

20.01.2022 Thinking about our theme of leadership for the month, I have experienced all different styles of leadership over the years in my role as Project Coordinator or Project Support Officer. The whole spectrum of leadership, from micro-manager to visionary leaders who give me the space to act autonomously in my role, but are there to back me and answer tricky questions if required. Speaking with one of my clients Isha the other day, she rightly pointed out that leadership can also... be of a project or process improvement initiative. I have certainly led plenty of those! You are also a leader of your own life and career. For me, that means taking on board what I have learned about leadership by having leaders in my various project roles and bringing forward the leadership qualities that I admire and resonate with me. I can then incorporate these qualities into my leadership of Activating Careers and my own career as it unfolds. I would love to hear from you about your experiences of leadership and what leadership means to you. Let me know in the comments below!

20.01.2022 Hi everyone! We are wrapping up this month’s theme on communication. We started off with providing a definition of communication and then worked through the five different communication types - verbal, non-verbal, written, listening and visual. We enjoyed a couple of amazing art pieces from my nephew and a couple of inspirational quotes about communication. Finally we spoke about the importance of getting your written communication write in your cover letter (see what I did ...there, right!). Keep your communication clear and concise and relevant to the employer. I tried different communication methods within the confines of working from home in Melbourne this month. It is a complex area and so much can go wrong with communication in organisations. It is more common than you think! Keep your focus on communication in all areas of your professional and personal life and your message will start to be received the way you intended! #communication #verbal #nonverbal #written #listening #visual #inspirationalquotes #amazingartbynephew #activatingcareers #activateyourcareer

20.01.2022 Who remembers the power of compound interest from school mathematics? I recall with wonder the huge earnings you could make with interest the earlier you started. Taking small but meaningful action today is equally going to have a huge impact on getting you much closer to your ideal career or changing up the career components of your life to better suit your current lifestyle. What can you do today to propel you forward? 19.01.2022 Hi everyone. Hope you all had a rejuvenating weekend. There is lots going on at the moment and it can all feel a bit overwhelming at times. Some International Students in my community have expressed feelings of loneliness during this time and a sense of powerlessness over the fact that your experience studying and working in Australia now involves staying at home and not engaging with local students and locals alike as you may have hoped. Feel free to reach out to me for a c...hat about your current situation and how we can set up some practical micro-goals to create some structure in your day and a way forward in your personal and professional life. Connect with me on LinkedIn or Facebook and send me a message. 18.01.2022 To finish off our whirlwind tour of celebrations from continents around the world we head to Antartica! On 1st December every year we celebrate Antartica Day, which is the anniversary of the adoption of the Antartic Treaty on 1st December, 1959. The Antartic continent has a unique governance system based on international cooperation and promoting scientific endeavours and knowledge-sharing the results of scientific investigations. We currently celebrate cooperation across... 53 parties to the Antarctic Treaty. Australia was one of the first original signatories and plays an active role to this day in international Antarctic interests. #antartica #antarticaday #celebratescience #internationalcooperation #celebration #activatecelebration #activateyourcareer #activatingcareers

18.01.2022 Now to travel to the European continent to explore how they celebrate with festive, family fun! Traditional Christmas Markets appear throughout Germany during December. It is more than just a market where you shop for produce and then leave. It is a meeting place where people can experience a sense of community and belonging. I once went to a Christmas Market in Munich and I was struck by the friendly and welcoming atmosphere and no sense of rushing, as people stop to chat over a mulled wine (good for warming you up also!) and children run around exploring the festive stands. Christmas cheer everywhere! #celebrate #christmasmarkets #Europe #Germany #Europeancontinent #activatingcelebration #activatingcareers

18.01.2022 Incwala festival, a famous celebration from the Kingdom of Eswatini, commonly known as Swaziland in English, is one of the most colourful and historical festivals on the African continent. 16.01.2022 Sometimes it comes down to a case of fight or flight. Your natural instincts usually point you in the right direction. In my case, I fled back up to the port entrance with my dog Beau barking furiously at the geese! Another possible reaction would be to face them, calm and centred, and defuse the situation with poise and, in the career world, professionalism! It takes confidence to know who you are, what you stand for and what situations are worth facing or walking away from ...(fleeing from geese in this example!). 16.01.2022 Hi everyone! It is the case of the Travelling Tea towel on a Tuesday! While we are all staying safe at home at the moment, we can nevertheless ponder our future travels and even consider relocating for a job or the famous Working Holiday overseas! Todays tea towel is from my time in the Republic of Ireland, the Emerald Isle! I will not mention how many years ago now : ). I did a twelve month working holiday in Dublin. There are many wonderful stereotypes about Ireland. Some ...of them true, some not so much. I will say the people are very warm and genuine and you feel very welcome during your stay. So much history, literature, theatre and art in Dublin. Even a pint of Guiness, to be sure! Coffee not so much. More adventures beyond the pale. A touch of mystery and magic emanates from Ireland. I would love to go back one day! Where would you like to go on a Working Holiday? Have you ever relocated for work purposes? Comment below. Love to hear your work and travel experiences! #travel #WorkingHoliday #jobrelocation #travellingtearowel #Tuesday #activateyourcareer

15.01.2022 Hi everyone! Written skills come into play in a big way with your cover letter during the job application process. Apart from the usual focus on grammar and spelling, I recommend you pay particular attention to the first paragraph. Put yourself in the shoes of the potential employer. They would love to read about a candidate demonstrating a genuine interest to work for their particular organisation, not just applying for a role and not caring what who you work for. I recommen...d you check out the About Us section of the company website. Review the organisation’s vision, mission and values. Read the Corporate Plan or another strategic document such as the Annual Report attached to the website. Find some data or a specific piece of information that resonates with you and refer to it in your first paragraph! Keep your written communication clear and concise and relevant to the employer. Good luck! #coverletter #communication #writtencommunication #clear #concise #relevanttotheemployer #activatingcareers #activateyourcareer

15.01.2022 Visual communication is all about communicating ideas and information through images. Visual communication is an effective way of communicating to people because the human brain processes things as a series of images. Examples of visual communication in the work place include mind maps, flow charts, graphs, visual reports and presentations. Visual communication is the art of graphically presenting information to readily create meaning. Infographics, interactive content and mo...tion graphics are other examples of visual communication. 14.01.2022 Hi everyone! Todays video is all about career change and how it is never too late to start. Of course, you have to have a pragmatic approach as everyone has commitments such as financial and family that need to be taken into account. It took me until my forties to figure out what I wanted to do. I was doing a working holiday in Ireland and had a temp job at a Kodak factory located in a small coastal town called Youghal. I vividly remember the look on some of the workers fac...es when they read the resume I had typed up for them, showcasing all of their invaluable knowledge and experience. It was like they saw themselves through a brand new lens. They looked proud and positive. I loved that feeling when I saw them all lit up and energised, even for a brief moment. I then realised there was a career in helping others with career change. I went back to Melbourne and studied a Master of Social Science (Career Education and Development) at RMIT University full-time and worked full-time simultaneously. I eventually started my small business Activating Careers with a focus on helping people effect career change at any age. I can help you with a pragmatic approach and practical steps to transform your professional and personal life. 14.01.2022 Proud to be part of a panel on a webinar facilitated by @StudentJobAustralia on the topic of developing communication skills and interpersonal skills in the Australian work, study and social environment. We all contributed to a lively discussion and answered some insightful questions from all the students who attended. Key messages from me are to be clear and concise in your communication, remain true to yourself to encourage authentic interactions and be mindful of the powe...r of body language, particularly during a job interview. Also the power of informal communications and striking up a conversation when you are ordering a coffee or buying food at the supermarket. Every time you practice, you will become more confident! 13.01.2022 A leader demonstrating a pacesetting style is extremely results-driven and effective at getting things done. Because pacesetting leaders are so driven, they set a fast pace for their teams to follow and expect them to keep up. Maintaining this speed and momentum can result in fatigue and loss of engagement and motivation from some team members as it is unrealistic to expect a sustained fast pace for extended periods of time. 11.01.2022 Hi everyone! Our theme for November is inclusion. For me inclusion is all about respecting diversity and difference. It is vital to welcome alternative perspectives and ensuring everyone has a voice and a safe space to be heard. This also leads to a productive team environment with a range of different personalities and approaches working together towards their goals, underpinned by the vision and mission of the organisation. 11.01.2022 Hi everyone todays career tip for Tuesday is all about setting clear personal boundaries. This will protect your energy and enable you to help more people. It is important to be helpful and support as many people as you can, and add value to your organisation. However, it is equally important not to allow yourself to be taken advantage of. So do be proactive and helpful in your role while simultaneously being aware of your usual role requirements. Someone emailed me via Link...edIn asking if I could help her find a job. I answered a couple of specific questions via reply email and pointed her to my free private Facebook group and tips and tricks available on my website. However a couple of days later she emailed again asking if I was going to help her. Lesson learned is to establish strong boundaries, communicate them clearly and maintain a helpful and positive approach in work and study! #careertip #careercoaching #activatingcareers #activateyourcareer #activateyourcareercircle See more

10.01.2022 Wrapping up our theme for the month on confidence! We first talked about confidence as doing what you love and what you are good at. My nephew did a great piece of art on this topic. We also explored presenting yourself with confidence to your future employer by backing yourself and posed a question regarding whether you think there is confidence in sitting on the fence at times, assessing the situation and waiting for the right time to have those conversations. Throughout t...his month, I have learned that confidence affects us all at different points in our lives and to varying degrees. I feel that if you move forward with action towards your dreams and goals, confidence will follow. You will gain confidence with every small step or giant stride you take in your career journey. I look forward to sharing our next theme for September with you all very soon! #careerchange #careerbydesign #careercoaching #careercoach #career #dreamjob #careergoals #careerdevelopment #careertips #inspiration #careerplanning #interviewtips #careeropportunities #careerstrategy #goals #resumetips #personaldevelopment #careercounselling #careerguidance #smallbusiness #training #motivation #jobsearch #interview #benefits #jobtips #personalbranding #jobs #activatingcareers #activateyourcareer

10.01.2022 Hi everyone! Career Tip today for International Students is on the power of LinkedIn! She is now a key member of our Facebook community - Career Circle for International stud...ents. You never know who is watching! 10.01.2022 My friend Steph reminded me that how we listen and hear is also part of the communication process. Listening attentively plays a huge part in engaging effective with people. Some tips on being an engaged listener include really focussing on the speaker and demonstrating that you are listening through reassuring gestures such as smiling, nodding and making appropriate sounds in the right moment to acknowledge what they are saying. Pay attention to the key messages and include ...them, in your own words, when you respond. A crucial part of active listening is not to interrupt! Make the time to listen without succumbing to distractions. Wait your turn and do not be afraid to pause and fully consider what you want to say before you respond. Sometimes people just want you to listen! They do not need you to jump in with a proposed solution to the problem or challenge they are describing. To be heard is often enough, especially if the situation causing duress is raw and recent. Never underestimate the power of listening. Do you find it hard to listen? Have you considered listening as part of the communication process? Let me know in the comments below! #careerchange #careerbydesign #careercoach #career #listening #activelistening #activatingcareers #activateyourcareer

07.01.2022 Career change can be daunting. It takes time, energy and commitment to recognise that your current situation is not working for you. For those of you working in a toxic environment, it is amazing how the situation becomes your new normal and you accept treatment that you would not expect to receive in a positive work environment, with all of your protective personal boundaries clearly established. It is okay to take a moment and just stop. Sometimes you need to cave in and b...e by yourself for a while to recover and recharge. Acknowledge what has been going on. Self-awareness is key. 04.01.2022 A leader with a coaching style believes in the innate abilities of their team members and empowers them to unlock their potential and find out possible solutions to any challenges they encounter themselves. A coaching leader will usually respond to questions raised by their team members with open-ended questions such as Have you thought about this? or Have you considered that angle?. This allows the team member the opportunity to consider a range of possible scenarios bef...ore deciding on the best course of action. A coaching leadership style delivers value to people and organisations because the coaching style creates a collaborative culture where people are self-motivated, enjoy learning and embrace change. There is the right balance of support and freedom to innovate and learn the art of self-discovery. Leaders displaying the coaching leadership style see their people as a giant talent pool and are not arrested to assist team members to tap into their own power and access their unique abilities. Coaching is a continuous process and works best when leaders and managers are trained as coaches and the coaching ability of team members are also developed. Give a shout out in the comments below to an inspiring leader you have had displaying the coaching style!

02.01.2022 Written communication is the third communication type we are exploring this month. Emails, reports, articles, contracts and social media content are all forms of written communication. In fact this very post is an example of written communication! A key purpose of written communication is to convey clear and concise messages to the reader. However, the purpose will depend on the type of written communication, whether it is formal or informal, and the intended audience. For ex...ample, an employment contract will contain formal and structured language, be factual in nature and use some legal terminology. An article for a social newsletter may be less formal and structured, drawing upon comedy and creative story-telling to engage the audience. Whatever the purpose, written communication stays around for a long time, even forever! So make sure your written messages are clear, concise and something you are proud to be associated with into the future. What is your favourite type of written communication?
