25.01.2022 Crackly knees. You got 'em? We fix 'em.

25.01.2022 Big thanks to Steph Gaskell from Nutrition Strategies for giving our team a great education session today. Everything from faster tissue healing, to caffeine, to natural anti-inflammatory diets, to gut bacteria, to performance enhancement for athletes. Plus some topics best left off Facebook. Can't wait to share the info with clients that are interested. And you could always contact her direct if you wanted more in depth info for your specifics.

24.01.2022 Wall art by our physio Jamie Wetherall. This diagram helps describe the constant input - processing - output cycle that our bodies and brains are in. Bioplasticity. Key messages: ... 1. We're always adapting - sometimes in positive directions (eg sporting strength, or social intelligence), sometimes in negative directions (eg posture changes, fear). 2. Lots of different things affect how we process and adapt: from family support, social experiences, movies we've watched, injuries we've had. It also means all these seemingly unrelated things can help us modify an unwanted outcome eg collapsed posture, or excessive pain. So walking your lovely dog may be a great part of your therapy prescription. Dosage= daily.

24.01.2022 If you think wellness is expensive, then you won't like illness. We physiotherapist can't help but face-palm our own foreheads when we see people let small easy-fix things become big expensive ugly things. The cost blows out exponentially, not just in dollar terms but in stress and loss of lifestyle. Like NIGGLING KNEE PAIN allowed to progress over years to become knee replacement surgery and painful rehab. ... Or POOR WORK POSTURE habits that become debilitating headaches, daily medication and regular days off work. Or some SHOULDER SORENESS that turns you from a social sport legend to sideline larrikin, to obesity and cardiac troubles. It absolutely happens. Small choices in your health now slide you from a point of relatively easy return, to a point that no amount of money and effort can fix. SPEND A LITTLE MONEY NOW TO SAVE A BUCKET-LOAD LATER, the return on investment for physiotherapy treatment is huge. Headaches, shoulder problems or back pain; what are you letting drag on? Let's arrange for you and your physio to keep on top of things. Contact us on the phone 82312983, or make a booking online via our website. The Active Bodies Team.

18.01.2022 Check out the new room art by physio Kim Wilson... The mountain she is referring to is a concept from the powerful book Explain Pain by David Butler and Lorimer Mosely (world-leading neuroscientists based right here in Adelaide). As you put more stress on the body structures (climbing the mountain) you reach a point of pain. But pain doesn't always (in very fact rarely) mean tissue damage. Pain is a warning system. Keep climbing and you might create damage. But knowing that ...there is some separation and distance between the "protect by pain" and actual tissue tolerance is a powerful concept to understand. A number of our physios have had direct training with David Butler and Lorimer Mosely, so ask us about it next time you're in. Ph 8231 2983 or book online at www.activebodiesphysiotherapy.com.au

17.01.2022 Acrobat turned Power Living Adelaide yogi, Triton Tunis-Mitchell has spent more time than most people upside-down. Here's his top tips for mastering handstands:... * Always always ALWAYS warm up your wrists before kicking up. Cranky wrists aren't fun and often take ages to settle down. Don't risk a big slow-down for the sake of a few minutes preparation. * Enjoy the journey... it's a long path ahead and there's plenty of great lessons to learn along the way, even if the handstand itself is being elusive. * Make daily practice your habit. Like anything you want to get strong with, you need to spend regular time on it. * All practice is good practice. Those days where you feel nothing is going your way are just as important. Don't wish them away, they're the ones that make you stronger. Whos up for the challenge? Let us know how you get on flipping your world upside down! Music creds: 240 Volts by The Twoks

03.01.2022 Check out the room artwork by Physio Kim Wilson! Stress stimulates cortisol hormone release. Cortisol shifts resources into our brain and muscles, heightening our sense and allowing us to think and move quickly. Great in the short term for running away from sabre tooth tigers. Our body turns to the same response when under the pump at work, sitting in traffic, or watching reality tv shows (to our body, these are like modern day sabre tooth tigers). ... The trade for this incredible shift of resources is that cortisol also shuts down non-essential short term functions like digestion, tissue healing, sexual function... things you don't need when faced with immanent tiger-like danger. So if you spend your day battling sabre tooth tigers at work and home, day after day, week after week... You get the idea... your body needs a break. This same process fatigues and stresses our nervous system, and can be a major player in making us more susceptible to an out of control pain response. ie chronic pain. So slow down. Breath. Drop your cortisol levels. And reduce your pain. If you've got questions, ask us here or contact the physio team for more help. 8231 2983
